Atomic back land 117, Salomon qst 106 echo, with pin bindings, Klint prime 100, Blizzard brahma 82. Soon to purchase Blizzard rustler 10 and need to also get a 90ish Maverick or similar. And finally, a lightweight Backcountry ski, then I'm done. This is for Mt. Hood now but hopefully Alyeska and other places in the future.

Having 10 pairs doesn't feel crazy at all if you think about it: Like ripping on groomers? Then you probably have at least a FIS SL, GS and SG. Don't say no to the pow? Add something like a Mindbender 99Ti, a QST Blank and a Blizzard Spur for the real deep days. Like to climb to get to untouched pow? Add 3 more pairs in ~88, 104, 116 but all superlight carbon/kevlar skis with pin bindings. Wanna have some fun in the park? At least one center-mounted twintip would be good. And thats already 10 pairs... without having any unnecessary skis that pretty much do the same. Realisticly you'd at least want more SL race-skis though, to put different edge-angles and waxes on them to best suit the conditions.

There is some good advice here. Buying skis is very intimidating for most people. Skis have so many variables with shape and construction. I don't think they realize how much they don't know.😅

Tend to agree with the 1 ski quiver being sub optimal. I think 2 is generally good, 3 ideal. I have an Enforcer 104 as my daily driver in Japan and a Bent 120 as my Powder ski. Most are surprised when I say my DD is 104 underfoot but width is really dependent on conditions/location. Plus it carves better than 95% of 100mm+ skis.
@StartCodonUST

For a place with a lot of snow, Enforcer 104 definitely makes sense. The carving ability was one of the things that sold me on it when I was demoing skis in the 100 range at Bridger Bowl over a couple powder days.

Maximium 5, minimum 2 . Minumum 1: pair rock skis (eastern skier) 2: then your favourite carver again eastern skier. max 5 1: rock ski (old rossi gs), 2: slalom (Fischer rc4 world cup), 3: GS (Volkl racetiger), (ex racer and i like em) 4: open groomer carver (Blizzard Brahma 88), 5: wider powder ski or speciality ski (I don't have any eastern skier). or park ski or freestyle. anything more is too specialized.

I now have only two (down from six) I did a little house cleaning last year. My main ski in the east is a Rossi Black ops escaper 92 and in the west I use my sender 94 ti. Arguably these two skis are rather similar with the exception of the sheet of metal in senders. I am missing a powder ski, but honestly, I just haven’t had the need And make do with the skis I have. My local retailer would love to set me up with a QST 106, but when and where I ski doesn’t make it practical. I can’t agree more with your approach to skis. Nothing does everything perfectly. After seeing your review on the head kore 93, I almost bought it, but decided to go with the senders instead

I think I've generally settled on four pairs for my quiver( after years of shuffling the deck). As an East coast based skier that travels west every year........... 1.Carver sub 80 mm- kastle px 71 2.East coast all mountain 85mm ish-kastle dx 85 3.western all mountain/ eastern soft snow 95mmish-volkl blaze 94 4. Powder ski 100mmish. -Qst 99 It covers everything except a real deep day. I'm just fine even up to one foot of accumulation. 😮

With budget in mind I would like to own 2-3 sets for the stuff and terrain I do mainly: - For freetouring and spring volcanos I have 95 camox freebird. - For a few days at the resort but mostly for touring powder and big winter lines Qst 106 echo or Atris, something along that mid 100 line wood/fiber construction. - Lastly If I am roaming around the resort A LOT I would consider a daily driver for carving with some titanal construction, 85-90 underfoot seems about right. I would gladly accept a new pair of boots, mainly for skimo/spring touring and a hard charging beast like enforcer 104, but thats beyond my scope and budget. 2 Years of skiing experience, Southern Araucania - Northern Patagonia Region, mostly.

Death to the 1 ski Quiver! You should have two pairs. (If budget allows) 1 Daily driver and 1 soft snow ski. The widths will vary depending on where you actually ski.

I agree with your advice. I think most advid skiers need at least a two ski quiver (or 3 ski quiver if you skin in the back or side country). I primarily ski in the Cottonwoods. I daily drive a 108 twin tip with metal in it (174 cm). Rips the groomers and also allows me to head off piste and feel stable yet playful when making jump turns or tight turns in the trees. Then I have a longer 116 mm underfoot pow ski for those 12" plus fresh snow days that is very flexible with no metal. If I lived in the East, I would probably get a narrow & damp hard snow ski for those "bulletproof" snow days and then get a softer snow ski in the 95mm range.

Thanks for the vid. Good number is N+1 :) Joke appart, I buy in the summer or demo skis. I currently have 4 pairs for the Alps : - carving ski : rossignol hero st ti 167 bought demo, 280€ - daily driver : elan ripstick 88 in 180 bought in pack for 400€ - powder : qst 106, 180, just bought them 370€, still have to choose the bindings (hesitating between duke 13/16 or pure alpine) I ski them with Hawx magna 120. - General touring : blizzard zero g 95 in 178 with marker alpinists and dynafit radical pros My next pair of resort boots is for next summer and I'll probably take an hybrid boot like the hawx magna xtd 130 (I do a lot of short lift accessed hikes toward chutes). My next "what ifs" will be shorter light setup for spring/ early summer ski mountaineering and touring powder (really can't justify this one).

It depends where you ski and your level but let’s say you are an intermediate or upper level min 2 pair and ideally 3. 1- slalom ski for hard and icy, 2- a medium width 84-88 for most days and 3 92-98 for days with some pow or spring. Only 2 take number 2-3 and only one than it is number 2.

I'm an intermediate skier progressing towards advanced and I have 4 pairs of ski (all bought on huge sale though). Like you, I have my Kore 87 which are my daily. I also have a pair of Kastle ZX98 for big powder...that was a pure impulse purchase. I also have some shorter Rossignol Black Ops 92 because I caught some shitty spring conditions in February and I thought it sucked so much and was too dangerous I had to have a more forgiving ski (at 160 my Head are fairly stiff and catchy in the slush). Finally, I caught an amazing blue bird at the end of last season with all slopes on ice after some mild temperature. I decided to try some carving skis at the pro shop to see how I would like it. I had so much fun pushing them as hard as I could that I purchased a pair of Head I Magnum. My friends call me crazy but for me, it ensures that I get he maximum fun out of each day during the small season we have in the NE (Quebec).

for the recreational skier, so eliminating specialty skis, realistically people could get by on an 88 and a 106 to cover every condition, and the 106 would probably be rarely used. I own a 88 and 96 because out east, I know the 106 is living in a fantasy. Any snow is tracked out immediately anyway
@BikeandSkiGeoff
@BikeandSkiGeoff Ай бұрын
Correct number of skis to own is nine 😁 And purchase last seasons skis - especially when the only thing that changed is the top sheet. Currently in the quiver - Serpo, Nocta, Dancer 2s, Dancer 3s, Mana 2s, Mana 3s, Ripstick 106, SR 102, and Pagoda Tour 112s (all purchased on sale or heavily discounted). If I'm going to Utah or CO and brining just one pair, I'll bring the Ripsticks. Time of season usually dictates what I grab. I'll ski my Stormriders almost daily in December/early Jan then will barely touch them again the rest of the season.
@CynicalWolverine

I have the Elan Ripstick 96, an all mountain ski. It does most of what I need, so I call it a most mountain ski. It does about 75% of what I want it to do. I definitely don’t believe in the one ski quiver, I’m looking for something to cover the other 25%.

I would also ad about what time of the year you are skiing.. You could get 2 ft of POW and still hit rocks.. I have 10 pairs of skis but out of those skis I used 5 last year.. 1 of the 5 was a powder ski that was so flimsy on the ice that I was sliding all over the place.. Early season it really is between my old race skis and a my 100mm with a 15m turn radius.. Once the hills start opening up then I can use skis that have larger turn radius.. It also depends on how fluffy the snow is for what skis I use... If it is rock hard groomers with wide open spaces then nothing beats my Stormrider 88s..

Welp, this morning I impulse bought a ski that I had been losing brain cells wondering about for nearly a year, but for which there are hardly any reviews for, the Stereo Piste RS (76mm underfoot, R=17.2m). It was on sale for 40% off, and I bought the last one they had in 175cm length from last season. I will try to talk to as many people as I can about this ski when I can form an opinion on it. I'm thinking I'll put a Look SPX on them so that there's some flexibility with boot size to get other people on these skis. I realized I had a need for a ski which was longer, with a longer turn radius, and would be more forgiving in soft or rough/choppy conditions than my Blizzard Thunderbird R13. I also figured that going to Europe with either a 70mm width ski with a shape radius of only 13m might be a handful, but my Nordica Enforcers would be a bit out of their element. I had been thinking maybe I'd get the Black Crows Octo since I was completely charmed the Mirus Cor, but the Octo isn't even on the market, and I don't know when/if I'll be able to demo them next season.

I think the number of skis needed has dropped in the last 10 years. Ski shape and technology was changing so much 10+ years ago that I was buying new skis every year just to benefit from the better performance. FIS slalom skis from 6 years ago aren't that different to the current models, and I prefer the older Stormriders with the 10 mm wider tip. Plus, bump skis are, well, bump skis. Killington!!!

I felt like i need more surfy feeling and more support in the tail and more weight in general. So i got Faction Mana2 twintips :D they are my dayly driver - at 102 width thei are perfect for resort style off-piste and just pure fun. Hardest question is - should i get BlackCrows Atris and use them for more fun ski tournig? Probably i would sacrifice lightweight for more fun downhill experience. Is it a good idea? P.S.
