Honestly, this was THE test match of the last decade. There was soo much drama... A hat-trick, a follow on, a mind boggling partnership against some of the best bowling squad you'll ever come across and then folding a legendary team within 2 sessions on the last day breaking their 15 match win streak. It doesn't get better than that. That was Test cricket at its best.

It's amazing how Mr. Dravid gives credit to Bhajji and say's he won the match for them and credits others but stays ever so humble and selfless. A true gentleman and one of the greatest to have ever played the game. I take pride in being your fan and the Indian cricket team. Thank you for your contribution for the country on behalf of all the Indians.

But that's the truth about test cricket. You only win by taking 20 wickets. The rearguard batting was phenomenal, no doubt. Maybe the greatest batting performance following on. But the reason why the test is memorable is the subsequent win. That only happens because of the incredible bowling.
@MohammadIshfaqueJahanRafee
@MohammadIshfaqueJahanRafee 3 жыл бұрын
@@VCT3333 That's the point. Without questioning the humility and quality of Rahul Dravid and Laxman, you can't win a test match without taking 20 wickets, irrespective of whether you score 200,300 or even 500 runs. A good partnership may save a match with draw but can never win. And that's one of the reason I feel test cricket is tilted too much in favor of bowlers, just the same way 20-20 is tilted towards batsmen.

@@Banzybanz Many people remember the 230 and 70* of Dravid in 2003, bcoz India won in AUS - Adelaide. But not many remember the 140-odd by Tendulkar at Perth 1992. That innings, many experts, including the great Richie Benaud, say that it was one of the best innings ever in Test cricket history. But that innings did not come in an Indian win. So people don't remember that much, some don't even know such an innings was played. This is what I was saying. Even people forget that marathon 140 by Gambhir in NZ 2009, in which he batted for hours and hours and hours. But the result? Just a draw....

The tickets for all the 5 days were purchased by our Uncle. My cousin's went for the first 2days as I had my exams going on. I joined from the 3rd day around 1-1.30 ish in the afternoon. My school was at Park Street and I went to the stadium alone by public bus (my first time). I was 12 then...by the time the word got around on 4th day of a India fight back people started pouring in. But it was after tea that the Eden pitch played tricks. H.Singh and Sachin got almost 8 in total. Bansal was raising his finger on almost every lbw appeal while the English umpire turned down everything. Dada made bhajji change ends to get him.bowl from the end Bansal was standing. It was 110,000 people in the stadium..the match ended at 3.30-4pm. people had 🔥 torches in their hands. A random guy next to me ( he must have been in his 40s) said " you will never forget this day"

I was fortunate to watch that knock live on DD Sports on the 14th March.Believe me,I had my board exams on the 15th for which I was not very well prepared :p.I just thought,I would see the first few overs,by which I felt either of Dravid or Laxman would get out and expose the tail. How wrong I was!!!!They just went on and on and on.The one over in which Laxman hit Gillespie for 4 boundaries made me glued to the television the whole day and I literally forgot about my exams that was to be held next day :p.Somehow after the day got over,I did a quick revision and the exam went off OK.Golden days those were of our childhood.Believe me.I have been following Indian Cricket since 1995.This was the greatest ever Test series I have ever seen India take part in,even though they have routed the Aussies in subsequent Test Series at home.But THAT in 2001,was very very special since it came while following on with a huge deficit of 274 against an Australian team who was at their mesmerizing peak having won 15 test matches in a row and with a bowling attack having McGrath,Warne,Gillespie,Kasprowich.This victory was indeed the turning point of Indian Cricket.This is why I would rate Sourav Ganguly as the greatest Indian Captain EVER.

it can .... and it will .... someday some guy will inspire his teammates to dominate world cricket again .... india under kohli is a possibility but not yet there, wi of 80s were the best team because of their bowlers. Clive Lloyd took a bunch of country boys and built the most dominant team cricket has witnessed. Waugh did the same for AUS. AUS were just as good, but maybe the fear factor was not as much. Ind don't instill that fear in the opposition(away from home) yet. Gave eng a scare in 1st match 2018 but wilted away. If this indian team cannot do it, it will take a lot of time for another captain, Ind or any other country, to instill the culture that promotes the habit of winning. But IT WILL HAPPEN. Someday in the future.

I feel incredibly lucky that I could witness this test match live. It was a time when my summer vacations were on and I watched cricket all the time. Because of this victory, Indians started believing that they could beat anyone from any situation. This victory revived hopes of the Indian cricket fans who had lost hopes from their cricketers because of some unfortunate things which happened in the late 1990’s. It was the start of something new. Flamboyant and Elegant Sir VVS Laxman and Firm, rigid, temperamental Sir Rahul Dravid. I fell in sheer awe, by this feet. Turning the tables against Aussies and winning even after being forced to follow-on is absolutely sensational, heroic and marvellous. Poor Aussies could only regret their decision of imposing follow-on. The crowd played its part really well also.

It depends on the scenario. I felt VVS was better against a spinning attack while Rahul was amazing against pace. I remember how fluent Dravid was against England in England at no. 3 when the ball swung. He made sure he whethered the swing attack till the sheen went off the ball saving a lot of other batsmen. Against Australia, VVS was always better at no. 3 when Shane Warne came in.

Agree. Chappell implied that, I think. No one could have matched Dravid on grit & determination. However, by sheer aptitude, Laxman was a great number 3. Maybe wishful thinking, but if somehow Dravid would have opened with Sehwag & Laxman, Tendulkar & Ganguly followed thereafter, we would have been unbeatable in the first decade of this century.
@divyadarshanjain5820
@divyadarshanjain5820 5 жыл бұрын
Dravid did open for India, both in ODIs and Tests, either that did not work for the team or the team couldn't afford not to play Dravid at 3. Dravid was more of an anchor, someone who is an ideal number 3, having faced so many deliveries, none to match yet. Laxman always wanted to bat in the middle order, and if you ask me, his batting flair was a treat to watch, he was one of the few players whose batting had a certain rigid unpredictable style, which was very annoying for bowlers in general, not to forget those hooks and pulls on the up. Both are THE legends of the game, maybe the records would have been here and there. We, as fans, should acknowledge, these unsung heroes more and more and more. Still remember the test and the series and loved both the test messages and love it's signification for the Indian Cricket Team in term of the confidence that this gave us and the way that Ganguli led the team to play and this led the foundation on which India is No. 1. test nation today in 2018-2019.

Steve Waugh’s legendary Australian side came in with 15 consecutive victories (no draws mind ya) and ended up loosing two in a row and with it the series. Indian cricket would never be the same after. The Dada era had started and it was there to stay

Unbelievable, unforgettable, unimaginable, unthinkable.................the test match that goes in the books of Indian cricket as one in a thousand (can't say million, as tests are very less nowadays, even one days, as T20, the cashcow game, is being played and shown more in TV as serials)......the way VVS counterattacked along with the company of Dravid the great innovative Warne, reliable McGrath, hardworking Gillespie was absolutely fabulous.... sorry Steve Waugh.....being such a great bloke and a humanitarian..... that piece of cake was not yours.... can't forget those golden years of cricket.......absolute contest of temperament, skill, stamina, flamboyance etc.,,,,,

I know Indians talk a lot about 83 WC win, but this is the test match that gave a generation of Indians the will to fight , and believe in that it's not over until its over. , it coincided with the resurgence of TV internet audiences,. The present indian team should always look at this moment when the indian team starting believing in itself.
