How Living in the 'Comfort Zone' Ruined My Life

Living in my comfort zone seemed wonderful, but ruined my life. The comfort zone might be ruining your life too. With modern technology, services, and delivery at our fingertips, it can make life easy. At first, the comfort zone is great! But, the only way to live an intentional life is to break out of your comfort zone. Living mindfully takes self-awareness and change takes effort. I changed my life by choosing to live intentionally and doing difficult things.

Fortunately for me I learned at an early age about discipline. Like my father I wake up very early. I don’t remember who said it but it’s how I live. If you do what’s hard your life will be easy, if you do what’s easy your life will be hard. When you do this comfort takes on a whole new meaning and appreciation. That’s why I feel I’m truly blessed. All appreciation comes from a greater understanding of perspective. Discipline is freedom, your physical, spiritual and mental health is freedom and wealth. Nature and physical movement is a gift and a great therapy from the noise of World.

We Live and we learn. I do still prefer comfort since I spent over 40 years working at least 3 jobs and I pushed myself day and night in all weather. Now recently retired with health challenges from over doing and never allowing myself comfort. If I am able now I would love to allow comfort in. 😊

Good video. Comfort is not a bad thing I itself but avoiding challenge or change means that your comfort zone shrinks over time as the things in it inevitably change and disappear due to factors beyond your control. As your comfort zone shrinks confidence decreases and anxiety and stress increase so counter intuitively seeking moderate challenge reduces stress by maintaining or increasing resilience

Ive spent most of my life out of comfort zone due to necessity of supporting myself both physically, financially and emotionally from an early age. Most jobs that bring enough money come with a lot of stress, so..after having burned out my adrenals and nervous system from stress, lack of personal safety and overwork, feeling no guilt for comfort when I can get it.

Focusing on helping others who don’t have those basic needs met is another way to get out of our comfort zone. Seeing life through another persons’ less predictable perspective can be life changing. Service can be part of a slow, simple life, and cultivates gratitude.

You're lucky to be privileged enough to have lived such a comfortable life. People in poverty like me, we don't even have to think about a life being too comfortable, because we struggle so hard just to meet our basic needs, that it's uneasy and uncomfortable at all times. I hope you're grateful for that long life of comfort you've experienced so far.

Trying new things does not necessarily mean that you are reaching for something beyond your comfort zone. We all have our limitations and there is nothing wrong with that. For a young person of 20 something, it makes sense for him/her to try new things, but for an older person, having comfort can be looked upon as achievement, with the except that person inherited the family wealth. It all comes down to what brings meaning to your life.

Good advice for me. My earlier life was so not comfortable and I struggled for many years raising children as a single mom without any support of any kind. Now I have a good deal more comfort but this is a good reminder that I might not want to count on it to continue throughout my elder years as we are living in a frightfully dangerous world these days. UP AND AT ‘EM!

I needed this badly. Staying in the comfort zone is not real, change is real and adapting to change is survival, the struggle of life must be embraced with an open mind, heart and eyes in order to savor its purpose which is to evolve and not stagnate.

I am a 64 year old young woman 😊 I love my life. I live in a comfy apartment that I love and I spend time with my grandchildren regularly. But I go out of my comfort zone every day except Sunday. Daily I exercise, meditate, work as a caregiver part time and here's the kicker, today makes 6 months of daily cold showers! Talk about going out of your comfort zone! 😅 But I can say its one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It strengthens the immune system. I havent had a cold but once since I started and it was mild. It builds your mental and emotional strength and helps me deal with uncomfortable things. Plus cold therapy gives you a natural high. There are tons of KZfaq videos about how to start cold showers if you dare! 😊

I've been reading about cold shower therapy, and as much as I respect the concept, it sounds like pure HELL! Does spending 8 months of every year of life either waiting for a bus or scraping snow and ice off car in freezing temps and blistering wind wearing dresses, nylons and high heels count? Then to have to drive to work in snow, and deliver and look professional for 10 hrs after all that?

And thinking in my head why should I get out of it if I am comfortable where I am, and thinking I have earned it. And don’t even use the word HAVE to anymore because of the past. And yes it’s not a good thing to be too comfortable because you do loose some of your confidence. And depression and anxiety follows. @@calleachbeare5173 First, I let my parents know (who live nearby) that I would be out of reach. Then, I double checked my Red Cross/FEMA lists. I did those two things the night before. The next day, I unplugged everything except for the refrigerator/freezer and went through my day with the equipment I had. The goal was to use daylight and fuel found in nature, such as twigs, before switching to my propane camp stove or portable power sources (including the car battery). I assumed that stores would be closed, and with the TV off, I would only have news as long as I could keep my laptop powered by its battery or the hand-cranked radio powered. It was a very quiet day, which is not a bad thing. I had scrub boards to do laundry and a clothesline. Plenty of books and crafts. I will say that one day is not long enough for the novelty to die down and to develop a new normal, so next time, I'd like to do 3-5 days, with only one meal a day. Work maybe more on the bathroom/hygiene side of things by assuming a water crisis so filling up the bathtub and trying out those tips they give for when the toilet's not operational ... any specific questions?

Sometimes after life has dealt us several blows, we need comfort and ease. We just need that time to heal. We start to realize when we have had more than enough and then comfort becomes uncomfortable to us. The need for growth appears, and we exert ourselves to meet it. When I hear you say that comfort “ruined your life,” I feel sad. I think that we all go “too far” in our choices and have to re-evaluate them.

What a wonderful video. A lot to think about. It troubles me the skills lost by not teaching children to tell time on an "old fashioned clock"; not learning cursive writing, memoriizing phone numbers. Some click of a button things; I have resisted. I do not do online shopping at all; do not have my groceries delivered; still read physical books from the library. We are in our 70's and recently packed ourselves up and moved to another state. Love to explore and travel. Getting out of our comfort zone is healthy. Sometimes we need our comfort zone. There are times when life is harsh, we experience pain, loss and suffering. At these times I personally need to run home to my comfort Zone, my safe and familiar place. I would not survive outside this safe place, so I think there is a time for experiencing new and exciting things and a time to seek comfort. My comfort Zone gives me time to reflect during difficult times and to be able to simply be myself and that feeds the soul..We need both and one is not more important than the other, bother necessary parts of our growing in to well balanced people

Hi Connie, I always find your videos very relaxing at bedtime. Also, I am interested in the backpack that you have in this video. Could you possibly post the bag info?

I love that backpack. Not sure if it belongs to you or the place you were staying at the time. Do you happen to have a link or even know the brand? The straps are unique, and I am in the market for a "back friendly" backpack for some day hiking trips coming soon. Thank you for all of your videos reminding me to relax and enjoy the moment I am currently in.

I certainly need to be reminded of the rewards of getting out of my comfort zone as it’s so easy to rest and relax in the fact that I’m there after all these years.

Balance is always the best place… extremes are never good… you are never satisfied… didn’t 'you sell everything before? … tell your story to the people who are in war zones now or are hostages… tell them to be ok because they are “out of the comfort zone”… a balance between comfort and risking is life…

We have definitely embraced change. We are constantly changing our location and it has been such a learning curve! I feel "out of my comfort zone" quite often now, but each day is an adventure! 🥰 -Michelle

LOVELY AND INSPIRING. THANKS SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL SOUL. YES, GOING OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE IS VERY HARD BUT REWARDING. WHEN I WENT OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, MANY YEARS AGO, IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE, AND NOW I'M TRYING TO HAVE IDEAS TO DO IT AGAIN. I WISH I'LL T HAVE THE COURAGE FOR THAT, THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE..

I find myself seeking to be comforting rather than comfortable. This video resonated with my quest. Seeking to be comforting does mean often leaving my perceived comfort zone.
