I'm Trying to Survive as Long as possible off £10 at Poundstretcher.
The question is, how much can I buy, and just what can I make for my meals, to be able to keep me alive and from being way too hungry!
Check it out, and let me know in the comments below what you love about Poundstretcher - or not. They do sell expired food after all...

Best before and sell by date are two different things. Just because it’s past its best before date doesn’t mean the food is bad. Tinned food has the date because it’s a legal requirement but the food is perfectly fine as long as it’s not been punctured.

From the US here. I talked to someone from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) last week who basically said the best by dates are arbitrary and that they are safe for years as long as the can integrity is good. I have been eating food past those dates for years and haven't died yet. We have bargain stores that buy out the foods near or past the dates to sell at reduced prices. I love those stores!

I second this. Food is essentially always fine unless you can clearly see something wrong with it. The best before dates are generally made up assumptions so they can't get sued

C'mon, Sam. BEST BEFORE dates are not a warning that the food has expired and will kill you. They are put on everything, including soap and plastic bags where I live (no longer in the UK)! Best before is a guideline. We didn't have them 40 years ago and cases of botulism or salmonella from such foods was a rare event. The thing you DO need to watch is the USE BY date. This is more often on fresh foods - meat, dairy, perishable items. They are important as the longer such foods sit, the more its condition alters with the growth of bacterium, etc. I look for items that are on sale because they've reached or are just past their best before date - because otherwise they will end up in a landfill - and using them within a month of purchase means they haven't lost any nutritional value. Honey has a best before date - it NEVER goes bad. Salt has a best before date - and unless it gets damp, it doesn't go bad or breed bacterium! I know someone who ate food from cans (no rust, no dents, no deterioration in the packing integrity, stored in a cool, dry cellar for almost 50 years) that had been bought and stored for an emergency - and they are still happy, healthy and intact! It saved them a considerable amount of money, too - only needing fresh and perishable foods for many weeks. The very fact that the shop alerts you to that information shows that they ARE checking dates and being responsible!

Allow me to educate you... J. Sainsbury's came up with a radical new concept in 1974. It was not a concept to Protect their customers from death. It was a concept to increase sales, and subsequently waste. It was so successful every other retail chain (to the utter distain of bin men, and subsequently Greta thunberg) adopted the concept. As you're clearly sold on the concept, im guessing you're a millennial or not that much older!! Oh, i forgot to tell you J. Sainsbury's 1974 concept... J. Sainsbury's INVENTED the Best before date!!!
