"NASA is defense" um... no,... its not. The DoD may use NASA vehicles to deploy satellites now and then, but NASA does not control or contribute to any weapons of war (including nuclear missiles, which are controlled, operated, and maintained entirely by the military), nor does any NASA spacecraft contain any weapons of any kind.
@carlokop556
@carlokop556 6 жыл бұрын
The only reason we had to start with the first space missions and Apollo was to develop and build ICBM's with public support. There is a lot of budget for defence and after a while a lot of these inventions are publicly available. Like comsats, GPS or even Google earth. It's not really the governments job to do research so there is just limited budget for that. Private corporations like spaceX can do that. But it's very hard to make that profitable.

Scye27 I know, Right! Whenever people complain about space exploration, I want to take everything they have that was invented or improved by the space industry (Basically everything, Phones, computers, clothes, social media was made possible by the space age, as was GPS and satellite radio, water purification, cameras, robots, sunglasses, some medical technology, better watches, earbuds, and headphones, blue tooth, weather forecasting, I could just go on and on.) to make them realize that space exploration is important. I mean, whenever they complain about space exploration, I get mad. Those types of people are annoying, and I don't think much of them. (It's also my pet peeve)

Going to space is an enormous undertaking and doing so we have leaped forward as a species. We need the space program. I need the space program. Conquering space is probably the biggest and toughest challenge humans are doing (besides trying to fix the problems we have caused on this planet) and I hope we are able to rise to the challenge.

Hell yes we should invest more into space development. In the grander scope of things it is one of the few things that really do matter in the long run - ie. survival of the human race. Interstellar colonization is far out of our grasp for now and might turn out to not even be possible - but if we can at least spread out to a few places in this solar system then we will have 5 billion years to work on that problem before the sun goes kaputt - and we are certainly capable of accomplishing that right now if we just invested ourselves towards that goal. If the space race had continued unabated we would no doubt have colonized mars already by now. If we remain isolated here on earth though it is nearly inevitable that we will meet our end much earlier - and that end could come unexpectedly enough that we can't depend on our ability to just react to it and launch the lifeboats when the ship is already sinking so to speak...

Just getting water and oxygen to the ISS will be the biggest problem The supply rockets cannot take the payload to supply them a couple of months. A sub has to use it's snorkel or surface for oxygen and I don't think the ISS can do that! One person uses approx 550 litre of oxygen and 4 litre of water, work out the weight of that one for a couple of months!!

The people who have the abilities to opperate evaluate and commentate missions, should hold to to their own preference, while getting the task they have. We just need to give them more tasks. This is me saying that I would commission tasks outside the planet of Earth, other than science related. I want more things done in space. There is always explosions, much like there are car crashes. All these systems would need an incredible amount of wear parts and a team constantly replacing them in the harsh environment of space. It would take thousands of o-rings, seals, electrical motors, and other supplies needed for systems that would eventually fail especially after years.

R&D alot of R&D. If there is anything that can be said of space flight even flight in general as it currently works we can only push the boundaries (e.g. fly into space, go super sonic, carry massive loads into the air much less space etc.) if we use massive quantities of full that we can't renew (at least not very easily as of yet) that generally create poisons that are spread into the atmosphere (whether or not you believe in global warning you ain't going to want to breath the gasses out the tail end of a rocket or jet engine). We need two particular things. One a propulsion means capable of operating effectively in anything from space to molasses for all intensive purposes that doesn't depend on massive quantities of fuel rockets need and that is far more efficient. Secondly we need a far more efficient power source, something like the arc reactor in Iron Man. Our current tech at best will allow use to explore but will not allow us (and by us I mean the vast majority of the human race not just trained astronauts and playboy billionaires) to travel into space and not very far at that. If we fail to manage this then, we as a race are doomed to die on this planet or die with it in the long run (admittedly a several billion year longer run but still).

The reason for all of these failures is BECAUSE of the lack of funds, if these programs had more money, they'd be able to use newer, more reliable tech. There's a reason why private companies are in the space race now, it has potential, they can see that because as a company, they need to think ahead, they need to keep doing things that have the potential to help tech down here, much like NASA did for so long. The government is stubborn though.. They want to use the money for pointless things like advanced military weapons, they need to stop thinking short term, we are killing this planet and the very people that are cutting budgets for space exploration won't even look at that simple fact, they are killing this planet, and someday, if we don't fix our selves faster than we are trying right now, we will need a new world to call home, but that will never happen with short sighted politicians who only care about oil and money rather than exploration, survival, and taking care of our only home. This is why we need these companies, and I know that you'll say "corporations are just as corrupt." This may be true, but at least they're thinking about the far future of all of us, yeah, maybe they're fueled by money as well, but that's the only way they'll be able to do these things. This is how exploration has worked for a very long time, think about the colonization of Canada and America, it was always trading companies bringing people useful over, not the government, rarely the government. We need more money for space exploration, and the only way that's going to happen right now is through private companies.

Let's look at the percentages. How many rockets private companies send up (aside from testing) in a year, in total government programs are more likely to fail. Yes, private companies have had some failures, but they are also trying out new tech. I know this contradicts my one of my earlier statements, but hear me out, government programs are focused on the space station, where as companies are focused on asteroid mining in the coming decades, what does the government want to do? bring one closer to earth with an unmanned craft, then proceed to mine it with an unmanned craft, where as private companies are planning on flying people out to mine these rocks, the private companies are also (seemingly) more interested in other worlds i.e. Mars, NASA and other space agencies belonging to various governments, plan on doing this in the next 20 to 40 years, private companies want to try and achieve this in the coming decade. So yes, I acknowledge the fact that these companies have had a couple screw ups, but no one has died, they've had less screw ups then government programs have and to top it off, they're trying to make space exploration cheaper. It will take time for them to perfect these things, but so far, they are more productive then NASA (and other space agencies).

We are a race that came from building a wooden plane that could only sustain minutes of flight to landing a rover on Mars and a probe to explore beyond solar system. I think we are seriously lagging in coming up with new, efficient and cost effective propulsion systems for space and interplanetary missions. These rockets are never going to be safe or affordable for regular space missions.

Of course we should continue to fund space flight. Seeing how easy it was to land men on the Moon during the years around 1970, we should be able to send men to the Moon next year, if the funding were available. And space travel beyond low Earth orbit is possible…

What would happen if all Astronauts have to leave the ISS due to no way of getting new Astronauts to the ISS? Does the ISS have to have occupancy to stay where it is or can they control it from the ground? If they cant how long before it loses control would it lose control and how long until it burned up in the atmosphere and does it have a self destruct option?
