Live Long and Master Aging

Күн бұрын

The age-old practice of fasting has emerged as one of the most powerful interventions to promote good health. Over the past 30 years, Professor Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC), has published some of the field's most ground-breaking research. A biogerontologist and cell biologist, he is the creator of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) and the Longevity Diet. His research focusses on the role of nutrients on aging and age-related diseases, such as cancer and diabetes.
Live Long and Master Aging (LLAMA) host Peter Bowes first met Dr. Longo at his laboratory in Los Angeles in 2012. He later took part, as a subject, in a clinical trial, in which USC researchers explored, for the first time, the feasibility and safety of the FMD. Peter also accompanied Dr. Longo on a trip to Ecuador to learn more about a tiny community of people with Laron syndrome, who appear to be resistant to some of the killer diseases of old age.
For this new interview, Peter returned to the USC School of Gerentology, in Los Angeles, to discuss with Dr. Longo, the milestones of the past decade and the future direction of longevity research.

You look really good and you're communicating much better than you did back then. I'm glad to see it. Dieting and fasting are very hard for me but I'm going to try and go on Naltrxone for awhile to stop drinking. I think that might make it easier. As previously mentioned, I have a lot of ambivalence about losing weight because of the complications it still brings back into my life. I only have about four grey hairs and for better or worse, am still considered beautiful by those who prefer voluptuous women, even at 69. The Titan disaster has got me very emotional and thinking about death and dying. I hope they didn't suffer. I think of you too, flying all over like you do. I'm afraid of planes and submarines, and complications but I might as well try again. I've heard good things about Naltrexone for Alcoholism.

I've read Valter's book and it's very interesting and the data is very convincing. However, the day to day eating, if you don't want to lose weight, is very dull. I prefer a straight 72 hour water fast twice and year, but then a standard Mediterranean diet, with the carbs and cheese. One thing though, going by appearance, Valter has aged ten years in the last ten years, like the rest of us.

One of the BIG problems we have is that most healthcare spending is AUTOMATED through insurance premiums (employer+govt+employee). People are not going to see real, personal, financial benefits from a healthy lifestyle until we have healthcare options that DISCRIMINATE against unhealthy lifestyles. USA spends TWICE what other wealthy countries spend on healthcare are see worse outcomes and the existing system is not going to give up that income-stream without a fight.

This is the second recent film I have seen by Dr Longo in which he criticises some diet and eating regimes programmes which have been very popular with people who want to be healthy and live a long time. The first was one in which he stated that people who skip breakfast do not live so long as people who eat it. For over a decade now the advice that breakfast is the '' most important meal of the day '' has been considered incorrect and out of date. Not so, says Longo. Today I watch this film and hear him argue that Ketogenic diets are not advised and will shorten life. As someone who has been doing intermittent fasting a lot since 2013 and also has done periods of keto, I am longing for some once and for all consensus on how to eat !

The reality is that the jury is still out on a lot of this stuff. I don’t know if you follow Peter Attia or David Sinclair. They both tend to be pretty anti-carb. David Sinclair skips breakfast and often eats only one meal a day. Longo looks very young for his age. But so does Sinclair. If I were going to place my bets I would bet on Longo. Nothing to extreme ….

You won't find it. There is no one way to eat. People are different. The longest-lived woman in history, which Longo refers to often, Mdm Calment who died at 122, ate three eggs a day and picked up smoking in her late 70's. But find some average American and these things might kill them. You have to find what works for YOU. There are websites that use your DNA test results to tell you about your ideal fitness, and diet. Look them up. See what they have to say. Try to get as personalized as possible. In the meantime, test yourself through local labs, measure your own glucose, do elimination diets, and so on. Once you find the sweet spot for YOU, it won't matter what any doctor says. That being said, Blue Zones are a good example of what healthy living looks like for *groups.* Check them out for ideas, because if you're from any of those regions, they might just be able to show you the most natural diet for your heritage. This is important. You've probably heard it said to eat like your grandparents...well, that's good advice. That's before processed junk. If you're genetically from Germany, potatoes might be better for you than rice...for example. As for him criticizing skipping breakfast, he did find more gallstones in people skipping breakfast. This is logical because excess bile acids in the gallbladder with nothing to digest for six hours have got to go somewhere. So *if* there's excess cholesterol in that bile it's going to form stones. Does that mean Sinclair is lying or wrong? NO. It means Sinclair - who is in excellent shape - isn't likely to have high cholesterol in his bile! See how that works? Longo is talking about average people, not David Sinclair. Also, ketogenic diets the way average people do them are disasters. People think eating lots of butter, fatty meats, and other god-awful fake keto foods is the way to go. As if it were a high-protein diet. Well, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the potential problems here. Of course, he's not going to recommend it! Keto means high fat, not high protein. I have done them too, and it shoots my LDL through the roof. Then I learned I could do vegan keto and guess what? no LDL problems because I don't consume saturated fat. Duh! People are different and most people are uneducated. Do the math. Good luck!

Five days fast would be equal to the regime and for fat adapted people's not that difficult. And you save money and time . He does point out about the bad info about eating 6 times per day. Also I think the word break fast or breakfast can be any time between 12 or 20 hours. Breakfast was designed to sell cereal and orange juice. I break my fast with liver or bacon or eggs or some sort of protein and fat. It means my ghrelin has got used to eating when I feel i am hungry. Keto dont do it he says. But it is helping people get off medication reverse diabetes and improve cardiovascular and mental health. You are not going to see established science support keto. It would do away with a lot of the need for different medical experts. Plus pharma would lose out. Sorry Valter I don't come from the med but my genetics came from farmers who lived long and good quality and healthy lives. So keto for me.

Although losing weight is super important for health so maybe there’s a good argument for keto on a temporary basis but… the research is solid that people who follow a low carb dietary regime have higher all cause mortality, presumably because of the increased consumption of animal protein and fat that takes the place of carbs.

No, FMD = Fasting Mimicking Diet. It has nothing to do with the amount of meals per day.

MEAT is the answer if you want to stay young and healthy.

If you want to age and die as soon as possible, yes meat is the answer. If you want to live a long and a healthy lifestyle, vegetarianism is the only way. Period.

@@Tiborqius but MEAT has all vitamins, minerals and amino acids we need. So, why should I eat man made plants? Do you know that there are not edible plants for human in nature. Do you know who INVENTED 🥦 broccoli? You brain can’t build new neurons without MEAT, do you know that?

@@longevitycoach1573 Man, you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. No offense. I'm a vegetarian from 13 years now, i experienced everything when it comes to food. Meat is the most acidic and most dangerous poison you can put into your body. It's pure trash! Human beings were created to eat fruits, vegetables and seeds. That is if you want to keep a pure body. Not to mention a pure soul, as you eat the slaughtered and tortured animal's flesh, so you basically eat dark rotten energy. All the vitamins and minerals that you need, can be found in fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains. Clearly your knowledge is limited on this part, otherwise you wouldn't try to push the meat poison agenda on others. There is no good health and long life with eating meat, and definitely there's no spiritual evolution as long as you put that trash in your body, which suppose to be the temple of God. Most diseases and health problems comes from eating meat. There is no worst food on this planet! You better off eating plastic, and still would be better than eating meat.

Why data shows vegan or vegetarian have loner life than meat eater
@Tiborqius

@@mnayak9348 Because they're more spiritual, and understand life better, than meat eaters. I rather be lonely and healthier, than sacrifice my health just to be surrounded by people.
