I hate that people always sell I learned in 6 months or 3 months. I have been studying for about 1.5 years and even still depends on the conversation you may think that I am fluent but another conversation I may struggle and seem like I am just really starting to understand. The thing that is hardest for me is listening in Spanish. I am here for the long term.

There really is no time limit... I’ve been fluent in reading, writing and speaking Spanish for almost 15 years and I still learn things... English is my primary language for 38 years and I still find words I don’t know the meaning of and look them up

I’m trying to kick my limited thinking. My biggest hurdle has been my “country” accent. We speak slow and this language can get fast. Whew! All 2020 I’m immersed en Español. ¡VAMOS!

For English speakers, with the right strategy. You could become basically conversationally fluent in Spanish in 3-4 months. This depends a lot on how you learn and for how long. I think the 3-4 month goal is attainable with good practice for 45 mins a day. I do however believe you could become conversationally fluent in less time, especially if you talk to a native tutor fairly early on

Person can def learn in a year. My sister studied in Cuba and she had to do one year of Spanish first (since school was in Spanish) and she was fluent by that first year. Buy the end of her studies she could speak really really fast and with the Spanish accent as if she was born there. Everyone is different as you said and depends on how deep you immerse yourself in it

Ill say this i have been living in Costa Rica the past five years my friends and my fiance only speak Spanish and before i came here i started learning 5 years before that and I still don’t speak as well as ricky. And im actively speaking even give full 10 to 30 minute speeches each week. The point is i was fluent after 2 years but im still no where close to this good and thats ok. My biggest issue is grammer and pronunciation but i understand what i hear and i can express myself. I know if i sat down to study grammer and pronunciation id be alot better but at a certain point i got comfortable. So if you keep working at it you get better otherwise you will only progress slowly or stop progressing possibly even loose what you have now if its not in your day to day.

My nerves get the best of me plus I have to be completely comfortable with you in order for me to understand Spanish and have a conversation with you. You would think me living here in Florida I would be fluent but it’s hard when you don’t have that one person or a group of people that know you’re learning and willing to have patience with you. I’m a fast learner, but without that patience from others it somewhat discourages you

It's also so different depending on so many factors! Kids are usually language sponges! Or if you live in an area where you are exposed to restaurant and businesses where you can practice daily interactions in Spanish. Or if you have friends/family to speak with. Or if you are able to move to a country and fully immerse yourself. Or if you only have a few hours a week to dedicate going to class while balancing life and kids and work...so many factors! Just keep at it and you'll get there in your own time.

I've heard speak Spanish and you do sound very informal

I would say that one should learn the Sweet 16 verbs and have a mental list of basic vocab. Then practice your listening. You have to develop the capability of listening to native output. This is the hardest part. Learning vocab and grammar is only a small part of language acquisition.

I have been learning for almost four years now. I'm not nearly as advanced as you but I'm happy with my progress. I agree with the fallacy of setting "time limits". In the beginning it is a good idea because it is extremely hard to start off and you will want to quit right away. The good news is once you learn all of the fundamentals it gets easier every day.

I've been watching Garfield in spanish to learn lol its actually working pretty well in just a few days ive gone from only understanding a few sentences an episode to understanding roughly half of the episode in speech However I do use spanish subtitles cause my ears aren't used to spanish at full speed yet but I have noticed that when I walked away from my TV that my ears picked up on a few words that were said and I stip the clip and write down sentences i cant make any sense of to look up what they mean later

Baselang was actually helpful. The main two reasons being they cut out a lot of the time language learners waste learning vocab and grammar that they don't need right away and they have unlimited classes so you can practice as much as you want. That being said there are things I also didn't like.
