How Long Do Coturnix Quail Live?

Do you ever wonder how long you should expect your quail to live for? They are known to live up to 6 years in captivity but the average is probably closer to about 4 years. But they don't stay productive for that long.

Thank you Chris for the information. I have my Meat Makers and Pharaoh's mixed up and really can't tell who's who. Your demonstration with putting your hand in the cage may help because I do have some that are more interested in my hand then others. I do have an issue with my two males showing aggression towards each other. I have the roosters with 9 hens, use to be 10 hens but had to process one because of a prolapse. I figured it was normal behavior with the roosters. So far there has been a couple minor injuries and nothing major so I just keep a close eye on them. We also have one hen who my 12 year old daughter calls "Moody Judy" who is in my layer hutch. She just gets in a mood and picks on everyone. So far she hasn't injured any of the others but the day she does she will be processed. Thank you for all you share, I appreciate it. :)

I found that it's mainly the males that injure the other birds, but their top / bottom beak can eventually grow longer than the other. This leaves them with a pointy weapon to inflict a lot more damage. I've just been culling those little bastards before they get a chance to do any damage. They stress out all the other birds too, preventing breeding and/or egg laying.

I do find that I get some birds that will be a little aggressive to other birds from time to time but as long as there are no serious injuries, I just let them work it out and it usually isn't a problem. I don't know that all pharaoh will be more interested in your hand than the meat makers but it seems to be the case with my birds.

Good info for us since we raise quail for meat and eggs! Our first breeders are about 2 years so I guess it's time to swap things up! We have a mix of white, pharaoh, and courtox quail. Only had 1 male get aggressive and we took him to freezer camp!

Sounds like you have a nice mix of birds. It is getting close to the end of the season and I always find that winter is a good time to switch out breeders.

I have 15 quail that all lay eggs. I hatch them more often, but what strikes me is that the chicks grow very slowly. The first few weeks they grow fast but from about 5 weeks it goes very slowly and they stay small. Once they are adults (6 to 8 weeks) they are still quite small. Ehy could this be and how can I solve this?

Ishan make sure their feed has lots of protein, 30% is the best but i feed mine 26% with good results. if you cant find high protein feed for a good price you can either buy insects or raise your own (dubia roaches and mealworms would be easiest, with dubia definitely being better cuz theyre more nutritious and have less fat)

bay holeman yes I know I feed them almost every day with mealworms, sometimes I feed them crushed oyster shells but they still don’t grow that fast

My quail have been smaller than they could be recently because of the heat. They'll drink more water and eat less food, resulting in subpar growth.

This is glorious, I have been researching "jumbo coturnix quail" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (search on google ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.

Thank you for watching. To dispatch them, I use a long-handled screwdriver to club them on the back of the head (stun them) and then snip their head off with a sharp pair of kitchen shears. it is the quickest, most humane way I can find.

I've had 6 birds out of a hatch of 60 get really aggressive and start attacking the other quail in their cage. I tried removing the problematic birds then reintroducing them, but they just started doing it all over again. Time didn't solve anything either, they just keep being aggressive. They grew up together and were in the same cages. There's just over 1 sq ft per bird and their feed is high protein. I thought I culled all the aggressive ones, but I recently had one male that was attacking females, trying to peck out their eyes. It got one female before I intervened. He pecked out her eye and peeled back the skin all the way around her neck. The other females in the cage weren't helping gang up on her or anything, it was just the male covered in blood. I got the hatching eggs from Ebay, I wonder if they were inbred? The seller was saying something about them being territorial... I have feeders and waterers on both sides of each cage and it's all wire bottom. There's only one male per cage too, so I'm not sure how they're being "territorial". Those commercial breeding cages only give around .3 sq ft per bird, I'm not sure how that would be better than my set up. It's a big problem, because one of those aggressive birds in a cage will make all the hens stop laying or not begin to lay. I know that if I kept those aggressive females / males alive, I'd have a total of zero eggs right now. What are your thoughts, Chris?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry that you are having those problems. Sounds like bad genetics to me. Quail, in general, tend to be a little aggressive at times, especially during the breeding season and when new birds are introduced, but what you are describing does seem to be over the top. I am afraid I don't have a great suggestion for you other than to continue to cull out the overly aggressive ones. Hope you can get down to a core few calmer birds and build your flock from there. For what it is worth, I have found the standard brown colors to be the least aggressive birds. if you have to order new eggs at some point I would go with some of those (like the meat makers or pharaoh).

I had some super-aggressive birds like this, two males just attacked every bird in every pen I tried. I finally culled them, I didn’t want to breed babies that were this aggressive...they were the dark coturnix...Tibetan?

It depends on how much light you have and what your weather is like. You can keep them breeding all the time if you have enough light (about 14 hours a day) but the eggs freeze in the winter here so I tend to give them the winter off.

I needs some help. I hatched out some quail. On Monday Aug. 5 they went in to lockdown. Then on Wednesday the 7th they started hatching. 10 hatched, I waited 2 days to see if anymore would hatch none did so I moved them in to the brooder. But kept the incubator on. Well I got more hatching. My question is there are 2 eggs that have piped but not come out. I can see movement. Do I help them out of the shell or let Mother Nature do it’s thing. Please help. Thank you
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I am sorry for the slow response. Helping a chick out of the shell very seldom works out well. In my opinion, it is best to let mother nature take its course. I kind of figure that if they can't get out of the shell it is poor genetics and it might be best to not have that in my bloodlines anyway.

I think we got this answered in the live broadcast last night. It would probably be best to use an all wire cage and hang it in a shed like enclosure. You really don't want to give rabbits direct access to wood.
