How long does it take to heal after a Fistula Surgery

Dr Maran talks about how long or how many days it takes approximately for healing after an Anal Fistula surgery. He says that generally if the patient has no other complications and is relatively young, the patient can return to normal life within two to three days.
Dr Maran informs us that after the fistula surgery, the patient can begin having food in six hours and can get discharged from the hospital in a day’s time. After that, the surgical wounds begin to heal and the patient can resume his or her normal activities in 2-3 days.
Dr Maran, however, says that the healing time also depends on the reasons for the fistula to happen in the first place. He says that if conditions like cancer have caused a fistula, then the healing is delayed and depends on the spread of cancer cells. He basically says that the healing time differs from person to person. The more the age higher the recovery time. He goes on to tell us that complications present can also delay healing.

It depends what kind of fistula you have if it's superficial will heal easily but if is a complex fistula is harder to heal and will take longer. Have you heard of kshar sutra treatment? 98% curable

Throwing yellow fluid is usually because of gastritis (tablets and surgery) He needs antacids and acid reducing tablets

She needs pain relief tablets and laxative with sitz bath. With advanced treatment pain subside 24-48hrs.

it is 20 days of my fistulotomy and I'm still having some discharged and the wound is not healed yet. There is no pain and the liquid or discharge I'm having is less than the recent days after surgery.Doctor said it will take 30 days more to heal so in total 1.5 months need to heal a fistulotomy surgery wound

Hi Dr. Maran I had an anal fistula surgery (fistulatomy) exactly 14 days ago. Currently the wound is recovering with water discharges and some yellow sticky discharge. However i have had a heavy blood dicharge for 3-5 minutes straight on 2 occasions in the past 3 days. Is this something to worry about ? What should i do ?

The healing wound with yellow discharge is exactly how a fistula surgery wound will heal. It may be there for about 3-4 weeks. But the bleeding is not normal after 2 weeks of fistula surgery. But nothing to worry. It could be a coexisting very small Hemorrhoids or a bleeding small blood vessel on straining for stool. Do sitz bath. Avoid straining and constipation. Usually bleeding may stop by 4-6 weeks .If it persists or worsens better get examined by your surgeon.

Usually we don’t advice dressing after fistula surgery. Every time you remove dressing it’s painful and prevents wound healing. Keep the wound open , clean and dry. Pain usually subsidies if at all by 5-7 days. If pain persists it’s usually fluid discharge from wound touching normal skin causing burning pain. Keep wound dry. Do frequent sitz bath (betadine solution can be added instead of applying antibiotic cream) If you’re passing frequent motion try to pass once a day only.

Nihal Dissa you may be right. What is explained here is only simple fistula. What I mean by recovery patient taking care of themselves. Depending on severity/ complexity/ mode of surgery / age full healing time is 4-6 weeks. Sorry for misinterpreting “recovery “ and “complete healing “

Do sitz bath at least 4 times a day. Keep the anal area clean and dry Dry area is very important ( in our experience even if you are constipated it’s ok. ) Take mild pain killers. Motion with its acidic materials causing burning

Mostly it may not be pus, just healing fluid. Wait for 6-8 weeks if it doesn’t become dry consult the surgeon or you may require a MRI scan

Lomnath LN if there is no pain , don’t worry usually liquid will subside by 4th week. If you’re on laxatives you can reduce or stop it if the fluid is heavy. Even you may feel difficult to control/ holding motion. If pain is there or the wound infection is there you may need antibiotics. Wait for at least 4-6 weeks.

surya kiran could be healed scar. Nothing to worry. It’s normal after healing. If pain and swelling is there infection has come back. Better see a surgeon and do a MRI scan to rule out abscess/ infection/ fistula track type to get a complete treatment.

Its not a pus but the fluid from normal healing . Usually 2-4 weeks(upto 6weeks) it will be there in down trending quantity . No need to worry just do sitz bath!

It could be normal now . Wait for at least 4-6 weeks to the surgical site to heal. If even after 6 weeks still it persists , do MRI scan. Because of the motion and liquid , the skin around the anus all the time wet. It may give burning pain in anal region. Keep the area clean and dry.

I have some doubt please reply. 1) I feel pain inside anus as there are stitches. How long it will pain. 2) dr said he has done Dissolvable stitches so after 2 months of ur surgery has the stitches inside the anus dissolve. 3) u said even after 2 months u have discharge. It is from where outside wound or inside the anus?

Don’t worry. Wait for 6 weeks. Do sitzs bath 4-6 times a day. Take laxatives. If even after 6 weeks pain is severe or you have pus discharge / redness /fever with pain need to do MRI scan. Get yourself examined by your surgeon or nurse if any debris or sutures inside causing pain

Imran Khan you don’t need to apply anything on the wound. Sitzs bath is the only thing 3-4 times a day all you need. Antibiotic tablets if your surgeon has given take it for 10-14days! It will take 4-6 weeks to heal.

i did it in algeria 2019 'fissure + hemorrhoid' i made sure to liquefy my poop day before surgery / first poop was after i started moving my legs it was diarrhea not very painful but lot of blood maybe the trash of the surgery than after around 10 hours from the surgery i started feeling the real pain of penetration in muscles around my anal i didn't sleep that night because of diarrhea and pain i had to take painkillers like doliprane 1000 well the first 3 days was hard than less than less until day 10 than things become reasonable today is the 30 i feel little pain when i poop but its nothing like fissure and it goes ones i finish pooping my tips are: go pooping before surgery and use drugs that liquefy your poop the night before surgery and never do it away from home cause its a LIE if they tell you that you can travel in your first day or even in your 3rd day / drink 2.5 liters of water after surgery/ choose the half Anesthesia than the full cause you gonna wake up on pain directly / if you plan to go out hospital in your first day you can keep the perfusion on your hand if you have someone who can use painkiller bottle throw your blood from home and thats it god bless us all and you better eat healthy before you get in trouble and after that salam

I had fistula surgery with Seton placed about 3 months back. Fistula track was 13.6 cms, touches sphincter. Skin was opened about 15 cms on the procedure. It's high complex fistula in ano. Seems I am exposed to TB. I still get discharge after 3 months of surgery. I am taking AKT4 for a month time, based on doctor's comment. Can you please guide me doctor?

Cool Breeze L usually by this time after 3 months fistula surgery it had to be healed well without discharge. But if there’s no pain only discharge it could be normal healing process for your body. You can wait till 6 months if there is only discharge without pain. If pain is there or you’re in doubt or pus discharge or more than 6 months or you are anxious do MRI scan.

Cool Breeze L rest has nothing to do with your healing or discharge now after 3 months of surgery. In fact I feel movements are good now they push the liquids out keeping the wound dry and clean leading to closure of fistula tract. Complete your AKT then do MRI is the best I think

Maha Lakshmis fissure or fistula surgery? Fissure surgery is usually painless after 24 - 48 hours if at all. Need to examine the wound. Consult your surgeon he can give solutions and reasons. Meanwhile do sitz bath and try laxatives. Try to pass complete motion in one time. Skin closure or wound healing is complete by 4 weeks. But no pain after 2 days in fissure surgery. May be 1 or 2 days difference may be there.

I had undergone surgery for fistula but after 5 days of surgery I was called for a follow up because doctor wanted to take the fissure off by scratching(it's a procedure I guess) but he scratched so hard that my anus again became tight due to pain and now I feel no urge to go and poop , please help sir, what should I do because the 2nd time I went there and told him the problem that I feel like stenosis he did not agree with me and told me that its psychological , so please help sir.

Siddharth Mujumdar the only thing right now can help you will be sitz bath at least 4 - 6 times a day 10 -15 minutes each. Because of the surgical wound irritation you may feel all the time urge to poop but only small quantities. Sometimes the fluid secretions from wound when it touches the normal skin can cause severe burning pain. Keep anal region dry and try to pass motion once only. Stenosis cannot happen in 5 days it takes minimum 4 weeks if at all. Don’t worry you will be fine in coming weeks with simple sitz bath and keeping the area DRY !

Thank you so much for the advice sir, also wanted to tell you that it's been 2 months since I had undergone the surgery and doctor has detected a scar on 1'o clock position so is the scar the reason for the tightness and can it be removed? There is pain in the scar.What should I do? This is the last question sir , please help.

Scar is an inevitable result of healing. Don’t worry if it’s not giving you any trouble. Even if it gives any problems it’s very easy to manage. I would recommend if at all you do anything to the scar wait for minimum 6-9 months for the scar to mature and contract completely!

@@drmaran OK sir thanks a lot so after it gets completely mature and contracted , then will my rectum/anus will function properly to completely push out the waste and will the stools be bulkier because now stools are narrow and hard to pass irrespective of laxatives. What should I do , also should I keep the area dry or apply oil?

If the pain is mild it could be simple healing scar pain / sitting for long time- work , driving / weight gain causing tail bone irritation / constipation. Do sitz bath frequently. Avoid constipation, reduce weight, avoid sitting long time, use piles seat. If the pain is severe or increasing day by day get yourself examined by your surgeon. Unbearable pain needs MRI

punjabi lahori don’t worry. It could be a normal healing process. The waste tissue that collected inside may slough out once in a while. Usually it may take 4-6 weeks to heal completely though the pain will be gone by 2 weeks Do sitz bath 5-6 times a day Avoid constipation See your surgeon if needed to exclude infection Time is the best healer

@TECH STARK the fistulectomy is healing alright, almost closing. The fissurectomy not so much, I still have spasms after bm, I suspect the creme my doctor gave me is causing the spasms. I can't stop it though until the wound fully close.

@TECH STARK originally I had a fissure, had lis surgery, had an access and fistula after lis. Now I underwent the fistulectomy and fissurectomy at the same time, the fistulectomy is a success but the fissurectomy not so much, my fissure has always been very stubborn. Don't be afraid and worried if u have a fistula after fissure surgery, fistulas aren't very painful and can be treated successfully with surgery, fissures though are a literal pain in the ass lol

@@nadiasympa1233 nice pun lol...yes they are man...i am suffering from fissures on and off for over a year, dude it's next lvl frustrating, only people who hv faced it will understand the pain and yeah the spasms...like wtf...out of nowhere sudden spasms are the worst...You using laxatives and still facing the problem? I am just scared of having both surgeries back to back...and the pain i will feel during bm after that...this sucks man...

Dipti Samal usual healing time is 4-6 weeks. The first 2weeks may be little harsh after that it will be very fast to heal. No special dressing or daily dressing needed. Keep the wound open. Keep the wound clean and dry. Plain sitz bath is enough. The pain and pus discharge is usually due to motion seepage beyond your control. In this one case you can keep your stool little hard by taking antidiarrheal medication. Try Tab. Bisacodyl once daily for 1week. This is our experience

@@lalubee16 now I'm completely alright brother.. But, it takes 8 month's to sit properly, to travel by bike. Just Now , I'm seeing my reply that I mentioned 10 days.. but hell for the 6 months. The pain will continue till 2 months of the surgery, later on u can manage with the pain.

Maximum allowed healing time is 6 weeks and should be pain free after 4 days of surgery. If it still non healing and painful please do MRI and get yourself examined by a surgeon!

Dheeraj Singh after fistula anytime when you feel fit you can have sex even the next day because sex will not affect the surgery or it’s healing. Only thing it may be little messy either for you or your partner. If you can wait 2 weeks it’s the best
