I'm often asked by both skaters and parents how long it takes to learn to ice skate. When it comes to skaters, they usually want to know when they can jump and spin. But when it comes to parents, they are usually trying to gauge how much money they will have to spend. In this video, I explain what you need to know about how long it takes to learn how to ice skate and what factors come into play - from a PSA Ranked & Rated coach.

I am in my early teens and I found interest in figure skating. I know it may be an unrealistic goal to go for competitive skating but I still want to do it as a hobby. The problem is the skating rink near me is pricey, and so are the lessons. I also don’t have any skates shops near me so my only option is buying hockey skates online. I am doing off ice training to strengthen my muscles however. I don’t really know what else to do in this situation, nonetheless I appreciate the video! I learned a lot!

Figure skating is not a cheap hobby. But that’s true of most hobbies and sports - once you become involved it usually can be expensive. Have you asked at your rink where the best place to go to get properly fitted for skates? I have a whole video on what to do if you don't have a skate shop near you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9eJoKiDqJvYl58.html

I wish I saw this when we started. For those just coming in, I'm a skate dad, and my daughter started a year ago. My daughter was 9 when we started. We are currently competing in "no test" and she is landing her axle, but not consistently. She's made great strides, but it took some work. We started skating four to five days per week for several hours a day, with several hours of private lessons per week. We now do (4) thirty minute coaching lessons per week with great results. It's hard finding that balance for your kid so they stay excited but you get see the ROI on your investment. I'm new to this channel, and also live in Texas which isn't the best place for figure skating. Thus, there aren't a lot of people down here guiding us thru these pitfalls, so thank you Aimee. I'll be tuning into more of your content. Oh yeah. We also started home schooling 6months ago to be able to train accordingly, so there's that.🤣 All the best!!!...

recently I got back my basic 2 report card and passed so I can move on! i started in December and i'm honestly really happy with how far i've gotten in skating. i'm super excited to try and do a spin since one of the coaches was teaching me how to do it, still dont know how to fully balance on my toe pick, less on how to pump correctly but we're working on it 💪i'm not planning on stopping any time soon!

Our daughter is 12 and started a little over a year ago. 3 hours a week private lessons + group lessons + ice time, we invested in her equipment and she has moved up to Freeskate 3, just needs one more test to move up again. She's done several shows, solos, and competitions (2 gold medals so far!). Starting her in homeschooling next year and this summer we are getting her 2-3 hours of ice time nearly everyday and ramping up her private lessons! She is training on her axles now and is progressing beautifully. The biggest factor for us is her passion and she loves dancing and eating healthy which makes a big difference! I just enrolled her in off-ice training a few weeks ago and she loves it ❤ Thank you for your video! I just subscribed and will watch them all!

Man I know this video probably isn't representative of the entire US but sometimes I feel so envious! I'm Australian and my nearest ice rink is about 6-7 hours away. A lot of rinks here are quite small too, with limited lesson times, and don't even get me started on the hire skates :( I wish it had been more accessible to me because I did a bunch of sports that I think align well (ballet and other dance, theatre, gymnastics, dabbled briefly in cheerleading) but I've just not had the opportunity to actually learn.
11 ай бұрын
We are lucky in my area that we have many rinks! But, that's not the case across the US! Some skaters need to drive several hours to the closest rink. When I lived in Maine the closest rink was 3 hours away and only open in the winter.

It's recommended that beginning skaters practice on their own for every one lesson that they take with a coach. Skating once a week is not enough though. It take a minimum of training on two separate days per week to train your muscles. So, that is the minimum. I suggest that beginning skaters try to skate at least 3 times a week. Half of that time should be in a lesson with a coach - even if it's just group lessons. I have a video coming out later this week all about practice and lessons. Look for that!

I started ice skating like 2 months ago, and I really like watching other figure skaters jump, spin, and all those things. I really want to improve, but right now, I can just take 1 class a week, and group, because my parents don’t really have the money to pay for a private coach or more classes. I really want to do at least spins.
10 ай бұрын
In Learn to Skate group classes beginning spins are part of Basic 4. Give yourself time to get there! After Basic 6, jumps are taught in the Free Skate levels - many rinks offer those as group classes or Aspire group lessons. It’s possible to continue in groups and do all things!

I will return to competitions soon and am going through the process of getting fitted with EDEA ice fly (currently using rented Jackson artiste so it's a major upgrade). I was wondering about group lessons. I am older (40+) and I absolutely LOVE ice skating. I started geouo lessons last year and decided to start private lessons. It paid off. I have passes my free stile level in less than a year. I was wondering if I should stop group and have been worried it would make me go slower. You answered my question. THANK YOU!! I will keep my 2-4 lessons a week and my off ice (yoga and strech) exercises. I am not sure about a Nutricionist. How much do you charge? How can you help me with that?
2 жыл бұрын
There's no one answer because it greatly depends on the kinds of group classes that your rink offers. If there are offerings for edge classes or Aspire (Bridge) classes that could be go to keep doing. However, if your rink does not offer anything about the Free Skate classes, there's not really much point in continuing with group lessons as it's time work on passing your U.S. Figure Skating tests.

So, my conclusion is; if you really try your best, work on the basics, do your research at home, you can probably progress faster :} Have fun skating everyone!

My toddler really needed group lessons. He tried private only when 2 and didn’t like it. Then he wanted to try again when 3 in a group lesson and liked it. Now at 4 he does one private and one group a week on separate days and loves it. He also gets practice ice time for free anytime during public time which he does on a third day each week. He’s progressing best in private but needs the community of the group. He also likes earning the patches in completing group lessons. He’s making me think I need to try skating sometime lol.

how long do you think it’d take me to land a double axel? ive never taken a figure skating lesson before tho 😭 i’ve been determined to start figure skating but i haven’t had the chance yet cuz of money, but a 2A is my overall goal in figure skating
Жыл бұрын
Before you can get to an Axel, you need to have the skills in place leading up to it. You must have a backward outside edge mastered as well as your waltz jump, backspin and all your other single jumps - especially your loop jump!. There are many useful exercises that can be used to assist skaters in efficiently learning and accomplishing Axels safely. Some examples are the waltz eight, lunge + bunny hop + lunge + bunny hop, waltz jump-loop jump, traveling back three-turns, etc... Then you would work with your coach on your double jumps. Once you have all those mastered, then you can work on your double Axel. According to Skating Ahead of the Curve, a double Axel can take an average of 1,750 to 2,500 hours of training time: www.skatingaheadofthecurve.com/TimingOfSkillAcquisition.html I suggest that you start taking lessons and work with your coach on accomplishing process goals (smaller goals) to be sure that you have necessary skills in place before you start working on your jumps.

I used to skate at the world famous broadmore under Marty martino and Jack raffloer but that was back in the seventies and eighties and I did skate in 93 and was still pretty well adapted to the ice now it's been 30 years and I need to strengthen my hips and my core I went skating in December on a makeshift ice rink new skates bad ice went down 3 times never broke anything cause I'm almost 70 I have good bones but I noticed that I was leaning a little bit and I was very unsteady on my skates which I know resulted in weak hips and weak core and I'm getting ready to do some strength training That I've taken and copied off the Internet so hopefully next year I'll be able to go back to skating and I had no problem stroking or doing swizzles when I was on the makeshift ice rink so I know it's not going to be too long before I get back into shape and I am getting a personal coach when I get to skate although I only be able to skate once a month Because that's the only ice time that the Tucson figure skating club has

In South Korea and in Japan kids have to learn skills at the speed of light since they start competing when they are 6 and 7 years old and then more hours and harder skills when they get older. The coaches train the most gifted ones and train them every week. It is a hard sport, but fun for for many..

I am and adult skater and I started at the age of 37 and have been competitive skater since then. ( it took me 3 months to learn basics to get into the competition. Now I can do sitspins with change of foot.. and all the single jumps ( except axle) working on it. However I have been skating at least 4 times per week and always been to camps on summer holidays and always done off ice at home. Because the consistency is everything in figureskating. Now I am working on doubles. I actually got two babies working these 6 years. So my skating time to get to this level is 3 1/2 years. My three oldest kids are also skating and I am a coach as well with education.

That's great that you've passed Basic 2! You'll start to learn beginner spins in Basic 4. The bunny hop will be your first jump in Basic 6. Before you can learn jumping and more advanced spins you will need to master your edges - forward and backward. I have a video about edges here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLhphdZ0ntSyeGw.html You will need your own skates that are appropriate for your level, age, and body composition. I have a great video about skates for teens here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eqhgm8-Bsr_Pkps.html. Make sure that you ask for recommendation of where to go for a fitting and do not order online if you can avoid it! And with privates most sessions are an hour for freestyle and 2 hours for public. Practice before or after each lesson! I have a video coming up about practice time - be on the look out for that!

Im in basic 1 of learn to state usa but they give us a card for 1:30 time off lessions for a skate session we have already learned everything from basic one in 2 30 minute lessions. (not saying we are all that great at everything but still) My whole class seems to improved alot in 2 weeks.
2 жыл бұрын
Good for you! Keep in mind that there is a difference between learning something and developing the skill and mastering the skill. To pass a level of Learn to Skate USA, you must be able to perform the skill properly 8 of 10 times - that is Mastery! Coaches first introduce the skill. Then, work with the group to develop the skill until you have mastered it.

I suggest that you start with group lessons and see how you like it. Then, you can move on to private lessons or continue with group lessons and add on private lessons with a good coach. Your coach will help you decide if you want to keep groups with the private lessons.

What do you recommend for older beginners (think early 20s) to look for in terms of learning to figure skate? I don't personally have plans to compete, but I do want to learn for myself and replicating professionals is an aspect of that. What type of lessons or coach would be aimed at older students, since most are child-based? Is there really anything?

There are many coaches that work with adults - myself included! I recommend that you speak with the skating director at your rink. They may offer adult classes or have a few coaches that work well with adults. They would know best which coaches are best for adult skaters!

I started skating mid April 2023 as a beginner adult. I got fitted for Jackson EVOs after a few lessons and started skating 2-3 times outside lessons. I only worked on the skills we worked on in the last session and watched a lot of KZfaq videos to supplement. It took me almost the whole session to get the forward one foot glide down! I missed only 1 session all of last year and I just started Adult 5 this month. I’ve also signed up for ISI sessions in addition to LTS (I’m in Beta) 🙂 Jackson EVOs are still going strong!

very informative. thanksy! The QUESTION I have is - why do people wear protective gear for roller skating, but not for ice skating?
Жыл бұрын
In roller skating, taking a fall on land can lead to bruising and abrasions. However, when you fall on ice in most cases, you will slide so wearing knee and elbow pads is not necessary. In addition, knee pads can hinder the ability to bend your knees to the degree needed. Knee pads can also create a challenge when getting up from a fall as they slide on the ice and make it difficult to get up! All that said, it is wise for beginner skaters and all skaters under 6 to wear helmets. You may also see higher-level skaters wearing butt pads, which we call crash pads when they are practicing to avoid hurting their tailbone when they are learning jumps.

When learning figure skating for the first time, does flexibility play a big part? I am not a very flexible person. Do you learn stretches during lessons or do you have to train yourself?

Flexibility isn't a primary focus at the earliest stages of learning to skate. It becomes more important as you progress. However, strength is just as critical as flexibility. Most skaters do off-ice training separately from on-ice as they progress. I have other videos about off-ice training here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLhIvo-BmGcaVzSQpvYvAPZ2fTNJezdpyu

Make sure that you are wearing the skates in the correct size, thin socks, and that you are also tying your skates appropriately! That is by far the most typical reason that skaters struggle! If you are in rental skates it could also be that the blade is too dull or the skate is broken down. I have other videos that can help you here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLhIvo-BmGcaWrdSOyrzbgzakn8HtnAGqV&si=WdFEDyzV_mY_7k8h Additionally, ask your instructor (before or after class) or the skating director for advice as far as your size and if you are tying them correctly.

Coaches might want you to learn fast, to be realistic since most competitive skaters are very advanced at age 12 and do doubles and triples very well, some are doing quads on the floor. Other coaches let you learn slowly but it is hard to keep up with other skaters in competitions if learning is done at slower paces and not practicing a lot. Johnny Weir learned when he was 12 too but he skated every day and many hours every week because he knew he had a lot to learn and other skaters more advanced than him. Learn basic skills and then compete. It is an extremely rigurous sport, lots of mental toughness, a body that is very strong, resistant and flexible is needed. Skating can cost in the beginning competirive levels $15,000 to $ 70,000 per year sometimes 100,000 every year if you are training for the olympics. Lots of money, talent and mental toughness come hand in hand. Best of luck.🙂

For non-qualifying competitions that accept registrations from abroad, if you have the money to register and get there and a passport/visa, AND meet the requirements for eligibility, you can compete there. However, to compete internationally on behalf of your country (like in the Olympics, Worlds, Grand Prix, etc...), you are selected by the nation's governing body based on your ranking/record of competing.

Is there any alternative ways....but pls don't tell me that iam old cause I believe iam a super human with high determination And thank you so much for your informations ur channel helps me a lot..
Жыл бұрын
It's not necessarily a matter of age. Rather, becoming an Olympic athlete requires 20-30 hours of training a week - on and off the ice with qualified coaches. So, you would have to be able to commit the time and money to train with Olympic-level coaches. For older skaters, there are alternative tracks in the US, such as Excel, which has an age requirement to register for the Excel series 21 and under. There is also the Adult skating track which has no age restrictions and its own competition series and Sectionals, Nationals, and ISU International Competitions too. That said, the Excel and Adult tracks are alternative tracks and not geared toward athletes with sights set on the Olympics. It's best to talk with your coach about your goals and follow their recommendations.

Anyone can have lear to skate to be a figure skater no matter how old you are

All I wanna do is learn how to be confident on the ice and that’s it.
Жыл бұрын
You should be able to do that pretty quickly with Learn to Skate Basic 1 and 2. Each group lesson session is generally for 8 weeks.

@@Princesspeachfan456 Unfortunately, skating is a sport that requires professional coaching for safety and correct learning progression. It's not something that can be self-taught. Group lessons are fairly inexpensive and well worth it for safety and better enjoyment of the sport!

A shame that we dont have any programs like Learn to skate USA here in Germany

There are ice skating programs in Germany! Check with your local rinks and skating clubs.

@ @Aimée Ricca Thanks Aimee. You are right, there are some things available, but it seems to me it is not really comparable. In the sense of having such a standardized program with several levels and a curriculum as the LTS. In my city for example (big city) there is one school that runs courses. Apart from being pricey, they wanted us to do crossovers in the first couple of lessons, after being on the ice like 3 times. Something that the LTS asks in Level 4. So it kinda made no sense to me. Maybe some other city has a good program, but that seems to be a question of "luck". Also a problem in Germany: rinks are only available in winter and then they are usually crowded, so no space to practice. You can join figure skating clubs though, which I eventually did, but I guess I would usually not have if there were more courses available for just learning for fun outside of committing to a club.

It sounds as if that program may be based off ISI levels. In ISI crossovers are required to pass the Alpha level. However, there is a level before Alpha - Pre-Alpha for skaters that are just starting out. When I took ISI lessons years ago, Pre-Alpha did not exist as a "level." It was kind of more of a introductory or maybe remedial level. I have more information about the ISI levels along with videos to demonstrate the standards here: skatewithaimee.com/learn-to-skate#7a0924b9-6473-44a3-84e0-3dff79958405 As far as space to practice - we have that issue here as well. But, what many skaters and parents are unaware of is that there are also Freestyle or Free Skating sessions that skaters of all levels may use as long as they are in a lesson with an instructor. I suggest that you reach out to the person that is in charge of the skating school of your choice and ask them what your options are. You may have to reach out to more than one program director.

My goal is to enjoy every minute of skating. If I can skate in a public session I'll skate all by myself in a public session. If the nearest shop with a single model of adult skates is 750 km away I'll order without fitting from 8000 km away. If some people have more talent I'll just learn slower, I don't mind. 🙃

@ Thanks, I have just watched it. My way was to find as many people as I could and ask them to try on their skates. It wasn't the greatest ever solution because there aren't many adult skaters in my area and my feet were always larger but it still helped a lot. I hope my beginner skates last for some years because I'm not sure I'll be able to go anywhere soon. At least I'm that very lucky person that has a skating rink just around the corner. 😀
Жыл бұрын
@@TT-ce9sm That's not the best solution because even if they are the right size, they've likely been shaped for the person that's wearing them! Try not to stay in beginner skates for too long. I work with skaters that do that, and when they get more appropriate skates, they see a huge difference and feel like they wasted so much time in the wrong skates.
@TT-ce9sm
@TT-ce9sm Жыл бұрын
@ Yes, I do understand this but it's still something and it's better than nothing at all. I've read in many articles (and heard in videos) that it's a mistake when beginners buy expensive pro skates (like Edea pianos) and that it's better to start with beginner models. I've got Jackson Elles and my coach says they are good for learning steps. And they already are a HUGE difference to rental skates!
Жыл бұрын
The Jackson Elle is not a beginner skate. I was thinking more about Jackson Excel or Mystique, or Reidell Emerald or Diamond. There's a huge difference between beginner skates like those and Edea Piano as there's many options in between! I don't mean that a beginner should go right to the highest level skate, as Piano is the highest Edea option. I mean that skaters should not be in a boot that's below their skating level.
