You've decided to quit drinking and now you're wondering - how long does it take to start feeling better after you stop drinking?
Subscribe to This Naked Mind on KZfaq - goo.gl/ZJQAZ8
Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind and Dr. Adi Jaffe answer readers' questions. Today's question is - how long does it take to start feeling better after you stop drinking?
The answer to that question can vary from person to person. There isn't a large amount of research available either on recovery and knowing when you'll start to feel better after you stop drinking.
While I can't speak for everyone it honestly took me at least six months to feel like myself again. My emotions, my sleep, and my health all took time to level out again.
Once you let alcohol go, there's a time of adjustment psychologically. You've let go of your shield and need to work through those issues and stressors before you can move on. That can be a wild card in the answer to how long does it take to start feeling better after you stop drinking.
There are also adjustments on a chemical level when you stop drinking. Alcohol touches many systems in the body and touches almost every neurotransmitter. Your brain almost goes into hyperdrive for a while after you stop drinking and are no longer numbing it. So how long does it take to start feeling better after you stop drinking and stop numbing it? It can take up to a year to reach a baseline again and feel better!

It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to quit drinking minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got cool results with it.

This video answered a big question for me. The reason why I can't stop drinking is because I get incredibly BORED. I don't enjoy the things that used to make me happy before I started drinking, like reading and writing. I wish there was something to do to help the healing be faster.

I agree with you 100 percent. When I turn on the TV set, all I hear is the vaccine 24/7. Everything deals with death and the jab. I am locked down and can't go anyplace or do anything. All I do is sleep and eat. Drinking makes me feel good. I can find pleasure in a boring world. I can enjoy being alone. Just me and my bottle and I am happy. Even if it kills me, at least I go out happy. Why live in a boring world. I like your post.

Just found your comment...really needed to hear this today. I’m 29 days AF and thinking, I’m doing so good, why not just allow myself to drink on New Years Eve, and then I can pick right back up where I left off the next day...but I’m afraid I’d lose my momentum and eventually end up right back where I started 29 days ago! Moderation doesn’t work for me, just need to accept that, until the point where i Don’t WANT to drink ever again! Hoping that will be at 100 days. 🤞🤞🤞

I had really bad anxiety for the first 2 months when I quit.. It came in different forms. I got panicky, I got anger anxiety, brain fog and stress headaches. I went to councling, did deep breathing and meditation, exercising really helped as it kind of mimicked an anxiety attack and helped my body learn to adjust to it. Positive thinking and I am affirmations and just keep deep breathing. Also get at least 2 massages a month for the first 4 months of sobriety. I had sleeping problems the first 6 weeks but that has improved and my energy is getting better. I use to binge drink 2 days a week and smoke heavy. I'm going on 3 months clean and I feel about 70% back to normal. Wish me luck

I think you can feel like a different person is as little as 3 months , give or take. Some things will speed it up ….coffee enemas a few times a week will help clean out your liver and detox : balance hormones. Cold showers help heal the brain I think …or ice baths/ epsom salt baths. Prioritize sleep !!! This when when the brain and body heals. Exercise a lot ! Get extra sun especially in the mornings. Learn about what supplements can help restore balance of nutrients / vitamins / minerals. My favorite channel for quit drinking is call fit recovery, and they go over that stuff. I think meditation and reading more and more helps to lower anxiety and regain a sense of peace. Last time I quit , once I had healed ….I felt better at 33 than I had at any point in my life , ever ….even at 20 as a college athlete. I think maybe the number one thing that can slow your healing is not addressing gut health / rid yourself of any possible excess yeast , bad bacteria , and parasites. ….puredyme enzymes / syntol probiotics yeast cleanse worked miracles for me in only about 2 months …after my gut health was fully healthy and optimized I put on 25 points of muscle in only a few months and people kept assuming I was on steroids haha ….nope , probiotics and coffee enemas haha. I hope this helps. I’ve been there , and am there again. Don’t give up , if you don’t do it for yourself and your future , no one will do it for you…take care of yourself the way you would want someone to take care of someone you love.

They are long time pros> I am actually looking forward to witnessing their consumption and track the changes that happen to them to use as my own guide and reminder of why I don't feel the pull to drink anymore. I am an occasional drinker and now limit myself to just 1that is if I drink at all, but this will be a challenge for me to not go past my 1 while with these girls. The first day not drinking was horrible though. I was depressed, cold sweating, tired, low energy, couldnt sleep. Boy did that go away quick. Sleep is a huge issue the first weeks, I tend to have bad insomnia if I'm not completely physically worn out, and of course sleep is when your cells recover. For me an hour or two of energetic cycling helps a great deal and in addition to a reasonably hard physical job. Doing something also reduces anxiety, that first week is the hardest. When I did abstain for a full year, two weeks in was a vast improvement after drinking for decades and quite a bit every night, beers mostly...

Do I just keep on holding on and moving forward and maybe expect the rest of the anxiety to clear after the 12 mth period? Didn't need it, but though I needed to prove I can still be in charge of myself, however, I don't really like vodka tonics, i picked that because i didn't want to push it with something i love. So, I didn't really feel as good as I thought I would, I didn't really like my thoughts being hindered, and the drunk ppl, the stench of the bar, and the bad sleep was a turn off. Oh boy I hope so, Im on day 28 and the feelings are still there especially in the afternoon. Im on Antabuse and frankly I dont think I would have got this far with out this drug hanging over me so Im happy in many respects, Im on my way and I know I can do it with these drugs but Im sure looking forward to not having these annoying feelings. I guess it took years of regular drinking to get here so one years to get off is not so unreasonable.

I am on day 10 I still feel bad sometimes and have cravings after stressful events. But, I do feel better I feel calmer and less sick all the time. I am hoping that longer will make me feel even better. How do you stop cravings though? I try to remind my self that I feel better now but what about the times that I don't feel better?

Up to 3 years? Sorry but that is just not so. Maybe at the worst if the person was such a terrible drinker it will take the body up to a full year but that will be if the person drank every day. The human body does repair itself. But if you are the type of person that needs any kind of drug then only thing is to change your bad addictions for a good addiction.

Scott K ....the quicker we get to work at discovering the underlying pain and trauma that we are trying to soothe with alcohol, the easier it is to recover ..... Recover means to find the authentic self ,,,that you lost somewhere along the way ......and then you need to start looking after them like they are the most precious person on this earth . You need to set boundaries for yourself and others on what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. You need to learn how to vocalize your feelings and expectations of how you treat yourself and how you let others treat you. It takes work ,but it is worth repairing the traumatized brain properly. Best wishes 🙏🏻

I was a weekend warrior drinker for 22 years. I have not had a drop now for last 4 months and I do not miss it,even to smell it now I may be sick if I did so thankfully for me I do not miss the taste my body said enough now funs over. It took maybe 3 months for weekend headaches to go and about same time for the headfog to dissappear. But 3 years? I mean stuff like that wouldn't encourage anyone to stop drinking. Sure if u miss drinking and you miss the taste then u will never get over it I suppose. The mind is the most powerful thing. When u say no make sure u mean it then u will get over drink much quicker than you think if u want it badly enough. I feel a new man myself and think all years wasted but cannot turn back time. I am 47 so hopefully I have a good few years left in me yet I can honestly say emotionally I am so much better as a man now well worth stopping. Good luck everyone.
