Went over to Norfolk again yesterday because It will be a very sad day for fans of the class 37 loco when they finish on passenger work in this part of the country.
The one loco had changed from my last visit in February, today locos were 37407 & 37423

There is so much *character* in this and similar videos - even when it doesn't automatically look like there is anything particularly 'special' about them on the surface. Just imagine the lack of this and similar, and it becomes much more obvious. All of this, however mundane it might appear to be, is very precious!

It's about TORQUE,pulling power,BHP is top end speed,Torque is bottom end grunt,which is what these motors(DC Series) are all about,the unique thing is that these motors will run to destruction if not on load,because they have no 'TORQUE CURVE,' it's pure destrucion 4 years electrical training college apprentiship........35 Years a BIKER (technology has changed to AC now,but TRACTION is what these beasts are about,and it was always DC motors years ago)TORQUE.....That is what a V TWIN engin has over an IN LINE 4 CYLINDER TRAVERSE engine...they pull away quicker,but the 4 cylinder has the top end advantage of HORSEPOWER,it's a trade off
@gs425
@gs425 5 жыл бұрын
@@peterkwakman7440 Parts of what you say are correct, though not relevant in this type of application. I'm afraid the torque power myth was instigated by Harley Davidson long ago to sell agricultural tech engines. What's actually going on is that larger cylinders like in a HD produce more low down torque that makes them more rideable with more available throttle response at low speed. However it is actually power that makes acceleration, it's physics not speculation. The easiest way to understand this is to take it to the extreme. A man with a long enough scaffold pole slid over a wrench can produce a higher torque than any HD or even locomotive engine...if the wrench extension was sufficiently long. However there is no way that same man could develop the same acceleration, because his speed would be ridiculously slow. Another way to understand why torque is only part of the equation, is thinking about the gearbox in a vehicle, which is in effect a torque multiplier. You want higher drive torque, you change down. You want higher speed, you change up. It all fits into the basic equations: Power = Torque x speed. Acceleration = power / weight As for the loco, yes you are right this will have DC traction motors. And the (basic) laws of physics for a DC motor give: max torque at start, reducing as the rpm increases to zero torque at max speed (theoretical as these large motors as you say would break up with no load). Though in practice the characteristics are modified as speed is increased as these have separately excited and controlled field coils (not blind shunt wound as per smaller machines). An added problem is that of the risk of flash over caused by driving the traction motors too hard at slow speeds. This is why tractive effort is not quoted at start up, and why most locos can't just be slammed into notch 7 from standstill without risk of damage. However the generator / motor drive of the loco is mainly to allow large start up forces without an inefficient mechanical clutch, plus the engine is able to run at it's max power (max rpm) through most of its speed range. This Is why torque curve of the engine doesn't have significance....most of the time during acceleration the locos engine is running at the same rpm anyway. In the UK there were several older classes of diesel loco that used hydraulic transmission. These were able to accelerate much harder from a stand still because there wasn't the same risk of traction motor damage. I have tapped this on my phone so I'm sure my explanations aren't the clearest but hopefully it helps you get the idea.

Believe it or not.. I lived my childhood between Upton Park and East Ham, a bit of distance SOUTH of the LTS line and on hot summer nights with sash window fully open to the east one particular night/morning I could hear a cl 37 going up and over the Barking flyover then along the viaduct towards Gospel Oak, for about 10mins! I could usually hear the daily cl 31 or 37 shunting in Grangewood goods yard in daytime despite all the ambient sounds but the above was the ultimate sound bite.

I, for one, will miss the 37s going through Lingwood because of the distinctive sound and the thrash they make. Passenger numbers on the Wherry Lines have increased because of national interest in the 37s, and of course when the 68s were running here for a while. We will miss the old gates when they are gone and automatic barriers are installed, it's just a way of life around here.
