There is a lot to cover each school year when it comes to phonics instruction! So, how do you know how long to spend on each skill?

If a child can read and comprehend most of the words he reads should I spend alot of time on phonics work? My child just turned 8 (2nd grader) he can read very well with fluency. He doesn't decode too often. I have taught him most phonics sounds during his k-2 years (current year 2nd), we still have more phonics to go but he's reading these word list when adding new phonics skills easily. I have him reading childrens chapter books and he comprehends what he is reading as well. Should I still focus heavily on phonics through the rest of the school year or focus deeper on other LANGUAGE ARTS skills?

He probably does not need a lot of phonics instruction at this point! Focusing on comprehension skills seems like a good idea for him and where he's at with his literacy skills.

How do you know if a skill has been mastered?

Great question! If the child can successfully read AND spell words with that pattern, that shows proficiency. If you give them about 7 words, let's say, you'd want at least 5 to be done successfully to move on to the next skill. You should always spiral review these skills in moving forward, even if they have shown they can do it.

Mastery!?? 😂 Sorry, maybe it's cuz it's in the 4:00 hour, AM. I have been in education for 25 years. I just don't see them applying the skills I teach. My second graders are acting like jaded middle schoolers.

That's too bad you haven't seen the application yet! When phonics is taught by practicing both reading and writing skills at the same time, there is much greater increase of a chance they'll apply it moving forward!
