Season 4 | Episode 02
Week after week, month after month, year after year, leaders spend countless hours with their musicians preparing for Sunday. They want to serve their congregations skillfully and well. But how do you know if you're practicing enough? And is it possible to practice too much? In this episode, Bob, David, and Devon Kauflin seek to answer those questions and more.

Preparation for rehearsal is critical to keeping it short. When musicians don't take the time to practice at home and are not prepared for Sunday morning. I would love to cut our rehearsal time in half (we could still sing through all the songs) But we have to practice the songs first and then rehearse them.

Most excellent advice - could I recommend the book "Sing!" by Keith and Kristyn Getty also? And City Alight are also in the same space of serving the singers (the congregation). One little point, that some commentators have made, is worth emphasising: individuals should practise (on their own) as much or as little as they need - the point of group rehearsal is to bring everyone to a common understanding of what's to be played. I'm with Devon on the "less is more" theme...

We are here to help people sing. I love that perspective. We need to be mindful of our aim as we are tempted to polish our offering of our art at the expense of our true purpose: serving.

I have to say, All of S.G.M. Artist Are Special! and Every Album ! As Far As Sovereign Grace Music, I'd say that the Music has been A Great source Of Encouragement, Enjoyment, and Food For the Soul while driving in the car or on A Trip and also Music specials at Church....

Good stuff guys. Love your heart for worship music. It really is a great point that we are not trying to recreate a recording or perform a show. We want to create music WITH the congregation for and to the King!

Thanks for this episode, guys. I found it very helpful as a rehearsal leader. Lots to think about and apply. I particularly appreciate your regular reminder of serving the body of Christ.

In my first worship team I was a inexperienced musician and I needed a LOT of practice time in order for me to become confident. I also practiced relentlessly at home. This early experience laid the foundation for me to eventually become a walk-on player for many churches that found themselves short of a bassist 15 minutes before worship begins😂

With each podcast I really enjoy posting takeaways. With this podcast there are WAY too many. From start to finish this is helpful to the Worship Leader and the Team which will - in turn - be helpful to the congregation. "we'll be okay" "what we do, as we gather together as a church is far more important than what we're doing musically" "we're here as part of the body" "lets make music, lets just not play something" "It's just helping people to sing" "What is our goal of leading" these are a few quotes that are huge to me as a worship leader and things I try and stress to our team. Our vulnerability in responding to minor (sometimes major) hiccups at the "junctures" simply prove we are going to be okay and our goal is to realize (35:24) 1 Peter 2:5 ...offerings and sacrifices are made acceptable to God through Christ. Thank You Devon, David and Bob.

I really appreciate this advice. My team has a weekly rehearsal and a run-through on Sunday. We don't aim to sound like recordings, we often use recordings as inspiration or to use for a "feel" of a song. Something I'm curious about is the fellowship of the worship team. I understand and agree with your points about why its good to not have very long rehearsals BUT I have a different team every week (with some overlap) and rehearsals and run-throughs are often such a refreshing time of fellowship with my team members. I'm a mom with young kids, and the ladies on my team who in a similar season of life LOVE having a rehearsal to have fellowship through music away from their "normal". I have people on my team of different generation so having rehearsal with them allows for them to interact and build one another up because of the outlet of rehearsal. Our team atmosphere is very collaborative and full of good friendships formed because of the time we can spend on rehearsal.... thoughts?

Love the advice, I struggle the most when worship leaders change keys sometimes to all of the songs when I show up Sunday morning. I practice during the week so my mind is free to worship. I know how to change keys but not everyone on the team can and we waste time and enter into worship unsure of chord changes, this happens more often than i like. Ive experienced this with many other worhsip leaders over the years. My only advise to worship leaders, to us who are volunteers and are not trained, keep it simple and please don't change keys just before worship. To be honest that's why I don't play as much on worship teams anymore.

Love y’all’s content. Do y’all use clicks during your service. Why to use or not ? I’m a worship director and love not using them but do see their value
