Though not designed for deep-cycle applications without the car's engine running, a typical 600 watt-hour car starting battery should be able to power a portable DC 1.5-amp TV/DVD player for about 16 hours or a 32" LED TV (30-watts) for about 7.5 hours and still be able to start the car's engine.

Yeah so deep cycle batteries are what RV's use for their off shore power. They can be used for starting just fine and are usually hooked up in a way that if something does happen you can start and run the RV off the reserve battery or batteries since RVs will often have 3 batteries total on top of an inverter (I think it's an inverter and not a converter) So that's normally 1 starting battery hooked up in the engine bay, and 2 deep cycle batteries for offshore and back up power. Offshore means you aren't hooked into a grid, if a ship is off shore it's not anchored to a dock. This is very useful because you will literally kill your starter battery rather quickly if it's being used as the source of you using things like a microwave etc even while driving. RV electricity is done a bit different. I could make an entire essay on how things work for things designed as offshore usage vehicles devices etc. Car batteries are DC, the electric grid is DC. The transformers and other things hooked to the poles and lines change it to AC which is what most houses in America have running through everything. So RVs have to have that inverter to knock the power down and change it from DC to AC for things like microwaves, phones etc. If you go to other countries you need power adapters to change the power type or you will fry your electronics over whatever time period on top of the fact that they have higher power usages. Their normal power outlets are not 110 or 120 watt power outlets, they are like 220 if I remember correctly and their appliance plugs are also much higher.

I am looking at walking the neighborhood a few hours / day with a vendor cart and I need mobile AC power where setting up a generator is just not feasible while walking and pushing a cart. I know the power requirements of my equipment (about 50 watts total, continuous). This video was very helpful knowing I can do it -- apparently better with a marine battery. If this doesn't sound correct, please advise.

I'm thinking about splitting my home installation into two backup systems; one using conventional car batteries (two at the moment) for lights and very low power draw appliances connected to low power cells. While I use lessons learned to build a more powerful second system perhaps at 48V that hooks up to an inverter. In this way, any catastrophic failure at either end still allows for backup, and more importantly, if fuel will be come scarce, I always have a car battery ready to go no matter what. My plan is to adapt my trucks to use lp gas so I can later fall back into home made natural gas. But then, I'd use them very rarely if it gets to that, so having an infrastructure that allow for this is critical. Additionally, I'm trying to get equivalent appliances that are 12V and getting a USB charging laptop is a key part of this. Having a gaming laptop is fun, but will certainly be unusable for the most part if I'm cornered into my backup backup lighting system. I also expect car batteries to be more common than specialized Off-grid batteries as time goes by. Still, going solar (not electric, but solar) is useful. Wood, gas, and other sources that can be harvested locally ... so many skills to develop while simultaniously, learn about the changing web and its traps as they begin to lockdown our system. My guess is that they wish to destroy the foundation of the web as we understand it(anonymity, interoperability, free exchange of information across the globe) ... all those privacy regulations will most likely be weaponized as they roll off those digital currencies and start with those advertised false flag blackouts (hopefully they won't but didn't those WEF crooks say something about digital COVID and blackouts?) Anyway... food for thought

I recommend the very basics. Understanding what amps are related to watts, ohms etc is very important. Next I would go with conductors, super conductors and current. You might remember from school the difference between AC (Alternating current) and DC(Direct current). Anything that produces electricity without a transformer, power inverter etc will be DC. Your house if you live in America has AC running through the wires. The power from the power lines is DC though. It's changed before the house is able to draw it from the line hooked up to your house. In Europe unless they changed it (doubt it) almost everything is DC. I forget why but I'm fairly certain it's a VERY bad idea to try to run your phone, a TV etc off of DC unless it's designed to handle DC which most American electronics are not. If you travel outside of the U.S you will likely need a special kind of adaptor, or power inverter to not fry your devices, start a fire etc. Especially in Europe the power is higher too. Instead of their normal plugs being 110 or 120 watts they are I think 220 for their normal plugs and I forget what their appliances like washers and dryers run off of but it's more than our 240-260 watt plugs.

Great job explaining the math. I would have divided the inverter watts by 0.85 and use that as the input to the inverter because that's what's really going on. But the math would turn out the same. I've been doing this technique for several years because when we have a power outage at our house it's usually only 2 or 3 hours. keep in mind that besides the TV you typically would want to fire up your Wi-Fi and Internet modem which are both low power devices also. I also rearranged the breakers in my panel Box so that those 3 loads were on the same leg and I use a male to male plug into an outlet also on that leg to my life easy with no extension cords.

@kleitzw 2 жыл бұрын
@@kittywampusdrums4963 you need to know how many amps your devices draw by measuring with a DC ammeter. Then, most car batteries have the capability to provide 50 to 100 amp-hours. That means 100 amps for 1 hour or 1 amp for 100 hours etc. However, car batteries are not meant to be draw down below 50%. A deep-cell RV battery works better for that.

So I have a group 34 Optima Red AGM battery which means I should be fine with using my back up battery then? I mean from my rudimentary understanding of how various batteries work an AGM is a deep cycle battery but not a marine battery due to not technically being rated for possibly being submerged or getting splashed? Cool thing that goes towards the battery side, is with solar you can recharge a battery without having to go to a gas station and get gas. With battery and solar charger setup its quieter and has less moving parts and replacement batteries after they go bad are a lot less to replace then a moving parts probably going to break something over time generator that probably wasn't designed to run 24/7 365 if someone was to setup a DIY RV or tiny home, cabin etc. Also with new Lithium based solar batteries the actual amount of power you can drain is a lot better than lead acid or AGM based deep cycle batteries. So I guess it all comes down to use scenario, long term the generator isn't a good idea, but having a generator combined with solar for cloudy day charging then you can power that TV as long as you want off the battery.

Well this can't be answered since you would need more information on the size battery, solar panel, time of year, and location. Those other factors depend on direct sunlight. As for the battery a general deep cycle battery with say 100-200 wh panels. Even in half a day sunlight it would not charge the battery enough to let it run day after day even then your not supposed to drain a deep cycle battery past half. It will shorten the life. Long story short if you want to invest in alot of batteries and solar panels to run a TV. Yes it will work or most small drain appliances. But just one battery and a panel no.

Would the battery charger keep the battery topped up like running a car engine with the invertor connected?
@mysterydude1
@mysterydude1 Жыл бұрын
If the battery charger outputs more power than you are using then yes this could work. But when you start drawing more power from the battery than the charger can put into it, it won't be able to keep the battery topped up. Think of it like a sink filled with water. Turn the water on, the sink fills up. Unplug the drain just enough so that the amount of water draining out and the amount of water coming in from the faucet are the same. The sink level won't drop. Unplug the drain all the way and the sink will empty faster than the faucet can fill it. If anything, this will give you slightly more runtime before your battery is empty.

It's called Square-wave vs Sine-wave or modified. Inverters don't do too well with LED lighting either, because of the wave form issue. An inverter powered 10 watt rated 120 Vac bulb will have about a 30 cycle flutter rate which is quite annoying. Also, most 12v LED lights usually need a minimum of 11.5 volts to operate; they just cut off all together, as opposed to an incandescent bulb which will just get dimmer as the battery power fades. This also affects an inverter regardless of the type wave form it produces. If your battery falls below 11 volts, the inverter usually cuts off. You have 11 good volts in there which is unusable.

Maybe I'm wrong but if the screen is black even though it's on none of those LEDs in the TV are lit up. When the power's out for short periods I use an inverter to run my TV and satellite but I leave my pickup truck running if it's really only pulling that many Watts I could leave my truck shut off for hours at a time......

That's not distortion it's the capacitors burning out from the modified sine wave..... lots of TVs don't like them...... This will not happen if you use a pure sine wave inverter.

What is the power requirement of the TV internal circuits? Don't most TVs convert A/C input voltage to DC to power the circuits? If the internal voltages were 12DC, couldn't you bypass the internal inverted/transformer and power the internal circuits directly and not lose the 15% inverter loss?

Well when he uses a 400 watt or 400 amp battery that is only 54 amp hours as my 1000 amp hour battery states that is 135 amp hours you can go to the Walmart look at the 84 dollar battery price some cents and tax with a $10 payback if you had a battery return to it it tells you it's $135 amp hour it tells you right beside the 1000 amp on the battery on the top that is 135 amp hour what makes 100 amp hour battery 960 amps wow that's so hard to figure out you always is going to look and you don't need my mathematician to figure it out for you.

Hi How to set up a mobile tire change van with 1500w inverter powering 1500 w air compressor + 1050w tire changing machine ? 24 gallons air compressor gets full in aroud 4 minutes which is enough to fill 1-2 tires , meaning air compressor will have to be filled 2 -4 times per car . Tire changing machine will probably work for 8 minutes per car. 120 ah battery should fill air compressor and still have about 75 ah left after it. Once 1 car is done this way then van will idle for 10 minute while packing tools and then travel to next car for about 20 minutes + can idle for another 10 minute while getting tools out for the next car. Wonder how fast can van's alternatot recharge battery while idling and driving for this kind of time intervals. Ford transit 2004 , 2.0 tdci, fifa, 92 kw i think it has 105 a alternator . Where to look for larger alternator if it can be installed ? Thicker cables as well ? Thanks !

I want to get on a stationary bike, or treadmill, and power my TV while I watch a 1 hour episode of Star Trek. Can somebody please give me a list of what to do to get this accomplished?? All I have seen so far points to a generator and a 12v battery...but I dunno how to put any of it together.

Great video dude! In my preps I have an invertor which I use between the times that the generator is running, at which point I also charge the car battery to keep it toped up. I figure it's less efficient to keep a generator running continuously if it's just to power low wattage items.

Not many people have a LiFePO4 battery as their car battery, and if you don't then you only have HALF of the stated capacity from your calculations. A LiFePO4 battery can use 100% Depth of Discharge with no damage and last thousands of cycles. FLA/SLA/AGM will only last a few hundred cycles if used properly, meaning never going below 50% DoD, because if you do you are risking severe damage to the life of the batteries. Calculate your AH and then cut it in half, not for the purpose of starting a vehicle again but for the purpose of avoiding guaranteed damage to your batteries. Also, never EVER use a modified sine wave inverter on sensitive electronics such a computers, TV, etc. Pure sine wave inverters are more expensive, but there's a really good reason for that.

Hi! FYI, I didn't watch the whole video... 2 much math lol... My question is simple. Approximately do you think a healthy new or used car battery would power my Optiplex 9020 PC tower and my 38" Alienware curved monitor for more than 2 hours?

Probably simpler to measure the amps direct from the battery itself. No need to account for invertor efficiencies, AC power factor etc. Just amps from battery to invertor to get the expected duration,

I think your 800 watt inverter is pulling far more power than is necessary. Try the same test on a 2000 watt inverter, and compare to the results from the 800 watt inverter. I doubt the two will be even close. Those inverters have to produce power that can jump up to the max rating at a moment's notice. They have internal capacitors that hold power for this purpose. And keeping those capacitors topped off throughout the entire runtime is going to waste power into the environment usually in the form of heat.

Future TV's should be manufactured with rechargeable battery plug in features. We live in a world where we have battery operated lawn mowers which work fantastic, I have a Ryobi lawn mower, works great and goes plenty long enough on 40 volt battery. Same application which is used for power tools should be considered for Televisions and every house hold electronics. Well, space heaters, would take alot of genius thinking, to battery power them. Let's start with our big screen "smart" TVs.
