In my experience one of the most critical thing for longevity of outboards where it is stored. Garage kept motors are the best by far. Next is freshwater motors. Next is how well it's maintained. Using clean fresh fuel is a given. My 1974 Chrysler was garage kept and looks amazing with the cowl off. I believe 2 strokes that sit for long periods of time do better as they age compared to 4 stroke. The oil is always fresh on a 2 stroke. But number one to me is where it is stored when not being used.

@@jackloose342 so when is the last time you changed the impeller. I bought my boat with a old yamaha 5hp 2 stroke about 5 years ago and waterflow wasnt that much so we replaced it (but we did this after a year or so) and like 3 or 4 out of the 6 impeller blades where broken off. I live in the Netherlands and i love buying old outboards that have been sitting and repair them and sell them for more money. Most of the time those are evinrudes and the oldest engine we had was from 1970 and it is still a runner!

Im not surprised to see 40-50 year old Evinrudes still going strong. I have a 1977 Johnson 9.9 hp with about 3200 hours according to my rough calculations. Primarily used in salt water, but properly maintained. Needless to say it runs really good and it has absolutely no sign of giving up anytime soon.

We have a 1999 150 Johnson Ocean Pro that has ~1500 hours on it that has primarily been used in salt water and it has been rebuilt twice because the piston rings failed in two cylinders on two different occasions. I don’t know where you live, how hard you run it, what the environment is like, or how much you use the engine in a year but I’m gonna say you got lucky with that thing.

@@UltraMagaFan Im living in Denmark and Im using my boat for fishing and small trips in the summer. I always tow my boat back in the garage and it stays there for winter storage (8 months a year). Im rarely trolling, most of the time Im running between 3/4 to WOT, keeping it about 14 knots. At some point I also had to replace my piston rings due to low compression, but no honing was needed, as the ring gaps were spot on. Also may I ask you what was the reason behind both of those failures ?
@UltraMagaFan
@UltraMagaFan 2 жыл бұрын
@@stilianivanov3377 I thought you were saying it has never been rebuilt but having a 45 year old engine with that amount of use that has only had to be rebuilt once is still incredible. Also if I’m going to be honest I have no idea why the piston rings in our engine failed. Hell it might not have even happened. We’re are the third owners of this engine. That’s just what the people that owned it before us told us. I just assume it’s true because the motor is 23 years old and it has a fairly large amount of hours on it. I wouldn’t be surprised. Some newer four strokes which are a lot higher quality don’t even last 500 hours. I can tell you one thing for sure it’s not getting rebuilt a third time. At least by us. Once this thing takes a shit we are buying a four stroke 175 Yamaha.

If your engine takes a shit, it does not have catastrophic damage, and they still make parts for it you can always rebuild it instead of buying a new one. It’s a lot of work but it’s alot cheaper. Ours has been rebuilt twice and we still continue to use it. Both times was because the piston rings went bad and it had low compression. Our motor is nearly 30 years old by the way.

I do normal maint twice a year before hunting and fishing season. They are more reliable in those conditions I think and run year round.

Our family has an oyster farm and our outboards get about 1,000 or more hours a year. Our farm is in conneticut so even though it’s colder and we have a winter having them being used is so important. My question is for a modern efi four stroke does it need to warm up for a few minutes to warm up the oil when it is below freezing. Also could you do a video on using outboard in winter in colder climates? Also we have to leave the motor tilted down when it’s freezing out so the if there were ever water in the gear case it would not freeze. I think a video for cold boat motor use would be helpful.
@40cleco

Use it gently (basically at idle in gear)for the first few minutes to give the oil time to warm up is what I do in northern Canada. Warming it up at idle speed can do nothing but help any kind of engines longevity..

In other combustion engines, the number of times that an engine cycles between being hot at operating temperature and then cooling back down is a big part of longevity. Just curious how big of a influence that is on marine outboards as well?

Fresh water or salt ? I see old fresh water outboards all the time but ten years in the salt is hard on anything. Maintenance is key and from my experience - the more they run - the better they run. Props kill outboards - pitch them by the book. Sand wears water pumps - 2 years is enough - we have decomposed granite in our river water. Seals leak. Water intrudes. Electrolysis is a factor if docking. Cold thickens oil. Small late model outboards are like money in the bank. You can recover half the price of new under the ten year mark in many cases. technology becomes obsolete. advances are made. 100 hours each year gives you ten years of good service. The Hull matters most. Everything else is replaceable - ON the Right Boat 🙂 That's my take on this interesting topic, anyway. 🙂

I can only speculate how someone would do that, but irregardless I can't remove the flywheel. On this model, you can't even remove the carburetor without first removing the flywheel. You saw that weird-azz carburetor didn't you? 🤣 So, any ideas on how I can remove that flywheel without damaging the crankshaft?? I'm not worried about finding another flywheel. We have piles of those. I can cut it down to the collar maybe, and then use a jaw puller? I need another perspective from someone who knows, like you.
