MotoMan sits down with the man that runs Chassis & Vehicle Dynamics at ‪@LucidMotors‬, David Lickfold, to learn how they make the 5,200 pound Lucid Air do what an M5 does around corners all the while carrying an 800 pound weight penalty and riding on a very basic suspension set up . . . turns out, the answer is less about cars and more about process & approach.

David, I not only drove the car, I purchased it! The driving dynamics is amazing. Like many others, I put a reservation in early not certain if I was going to convert it to an order. I was one of the last persons to convert, still getting the legacy pricing and the $7,500 'rebate' that Lucid offered in April. I'm glad to have waited because there apparently was a rather steep learning curve Lucid went through during the first 10 months of production. Everything from the improved painting of the exterior to the redesign of the user interface brought the car along to what it is now - one of the best vehicles I've owned. Still not perfect, but with OTA updates, I'm optimistic it will get there. Whereas I usually hold on to vehicles for 5-7 years, it's likely I'll be holding on to this for (gulp!) 10-15 years. As long as the battery holds out, and the seats remain firm, this is a keeper. Keep the OTA updates coming! We love them!

This car is legitimately an engineering marvel. Whether it's the magically impressive range, the unheard of amount of storage space, the intuitive infotainment (barring the glovebox lol), the driving dynamics, the drag, the look of the car itself, the power. This car is just a winner through and through

What a classy, humble and inspiring person! Well done, David for not disparaging any other automaker and just focussing on Lucid. Well done Motoman for a beautiful interview. I was about to drop $$ for a brand new Tesla S Plaid - only because Lucid is not available here (in UAE). This interview has made we wait some more, until they can get to our shores.

That’s the thing about rules. They begin as something very important. But beyond people retiring and rules being less understood, is the fact that technology very often obliterates the rule entirely! Rules are slow to adapt to new information. People get stuck in their ways. What I find most refreshing about Lucid’s philosophy is that it puts the emphasis on creativity, engineering and innovation, without the legacy baggage. Look at the stunning result! I too purchased the product after driving it. I don't believe it's just the best EV. It might just be the best overall driving CAR out today.

Feedback: Love my Air GT, driving for a year now. I spent a career designing special ventilation systems. You 100% need greater air volume into the cabin for pulldown and hot climates. Not saying to blow it at the occupants but to get volume exchange in the cabin. The key is high volume, modest velocity, with a moderate temperature drop. Especially for pull-down from heat soak getting exchange volume up will be critical. This will be an issue in Saudi. This can be addressed. I have tried to find a contact for engineering but was told by Derek to 'just post on social media.' I have been reluctant to do that until now, but I'm starting to hear more complaints from owners and reviewers. And for owners: Turn the rear air on, synch, and set blowers to Max for the quickest cool down. Leave rear air on in hot climates if you need. Yes, this will use a bit more energy but you have plenty to spare, right?

I bet the size was chosen to flip the finger at Tesla and show what the packaging can be like, battling on a level playing fiield. Both Tesla Model S and Lucid Air are BEV, but Lucid offers more power, seating space, 3x the frunk, and of course more range and luxury. Al I wish, is for Lucid to come as a wagon. The 90 kWh wagon would WHIP the Mercedes EQE. The huge frunk where EQE has none. The ample rear boot, interior space, rear foot well (no cells under feet in the small battery Lucid), range. EQE then wins only with software and driving aids.

I agree, I think the practicality of a station wagon, combined with the interior of a lucid air, can address a lot of the wants of typical SUV buyers (I e. Lots of interior space and practicality) while achieving the desired efficiency out of an EV

@@ResumedPausing They are making an SUV version on same or similar platform. Like Model X to Model S, I guess. Perhaps a tradition SUV boot with taller cabine does wonders. I like sitting high, but in EQS SUV it costs 100 km of range, so perhaps I'll just sit low then. The SUV's frunk might be next level huge, though. Ford Lightning like?

That really rubs the liberals the wrong way, the only speech allowed can be their narratives. Rest assured, Elon works for the WEF and won't let freedom get too normal, even hired a fully WEF-bred CEO already. Most of that flies over the Tesla warriors' head though, so they just feel betrayed by Elon and many of the most devoted ones are not making Rivian videos. I have owned a GT- Performance for about 10 months. I was concerned it would be a bit to wide for life in Chicago but the superb handling has kept that from being an issue. Ride quality is terrific. Lovely interior but being forced to accept 2 tones and no black carpet or light wood with a saddle leather choice is pretty stupid. Not as stupid as the 21 inch wheels, there is just not enough sidewall to allow these to be relied upon in real world conditions. Mine are in the basement collecting dust. The power and power delivery make the car a show.

The current models from Lucid are not in my reach. That said, every review of a version of the Air is falling over itself complimentary (save residual s/w issues that are improving). I sincerely hope for a smaller nimble Lucid sedan, that will be within reach, because I AM intrigued by a company that has the triplet pulls of driving joy, quality, and efficiency ALL on the mandatory target at the same time. Looking forward to the next, smaller sedan!!

I test drove the Lucid Air, it was so nice and smooth to drive! I still think about it. My main issue was with the regen braking, not with one pedal driving though. When you let go of the accelerator the regen braking kicks in hard and it’s very jarring. I would like it to kick in smoother. Also, the electric motors sound like their grinding in parking lot speeds, they got to figure that out because that does not sound good

Motoman, what you say about the taycan not “steering” through high speed turns makes absolutely no sense. As the owner of a taycan, along with 911s, AMGs, Ms, Cadillac Vs, Aston’s, McLarens, etc etc etc… I rate the taycan as one of the best driving, and steering, vehicles of any kind that I have sat behind the wheel of. Although I have never driven a lucid, I would be very surprised if it’s steering was even in the same league as the porsche.

Access to a company like this usually accompanies unrealistic platitudes. I have owned a Taycan as well and couldn't wait to sell it, doesn't even come close to the 911 experience in my opinion. Went from 991.2 to Taycan to 992.

I'd love to see someone taking the top BEVs, and stripping them down to the bare minimum, for track performance. Turn them into barely street legal track tools. EQS, EQE, Taycan Turbo S, Plaid, Air, i4, EV6 GT, etc. That's stage 1, for instance. Then have a suspension guru like Bilstein or Koni go nuts on adjusting everything to the now lower weight and track specific demand. Swap parts if needed. Now some capable racing slicks that can handle the heft and power. Can those slick body panels be replaced with racing style silhouette sheeting to save weight and maintain low drag? Next, what aero mods will help more on the downforce and cooling side, than hurt straight line efficiency?

Would the Lucid Air actually be fast around the track? I can see that it handles responsively, but can it generate cornering g-forces that are the key metric in what Porsche appears to do so well even in cars heavier than their competitors? Lucid Air is even heavier than Taycan Turbo S, but of course also has a lot more peak power. How does that all work on a 2 minute track outing, let along the 7.5-8 minutes on the Nordschleife testing grounds? Tesla Model S Plaid set a fast lap there, but it's actually a lot lighter than the Lucid, great system integration and Spartan interior, smaller battery than most Airs. Still, its tyres were HOWLING in corners under the weight transfer loads.
@Cloxxki

@@vickykennel7414 Explain that to the multi billion companies that pride themselves in making their cars lap faster than the competition, when really very few customers actually do track days or the like.
