Welcome back to the 5 Play Challenge, with five plays involving foul or flop situations. We will show five video clips showing either a foul or a flop in three different ways giving ample opportunity to make a ruling. First, is in real time. Second, is zoomed in and slowed it down. Third, an analysis of what happened is given and the correct ruling revealed. These videos, as always, are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball.
The 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but instead simply references rules as they are written and guidelines to help appropriately apply those rules. Every foul or flop video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see these types of plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
Video #1
- A player in the corner shoots from outside the three and falls to the ground. The Trail officials rules a foul. Was the official correct or did the player flop?
Video #2
- Another shooting foul called outside the three point arc. Looks like there was some contact but was it enough to cause the player to fall? Watch and you decide.
Video #3
- A pass is made and in the process the passer falls to the floor. The shot was missed and the player seems to think he was fouled but here was no whistle on the play. What do you think of this one? Was he fouled?
Video #4
- A drive to the bucket, splitting two defenders, and one of the falling down trying to take a charge. There is no whistle on the play. Were the officials correct? Or should there have been a foul?
Video #5
- This play happens in the post and once again the defender falls back after possible contact on the ball handler. There was no foul called. Watch and see what happened.
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

Well, I don't know about 100%. There didn't seem to be much contact, even though the defender got into the shooter's space. The shooter did embellish the contact though, so in that sense it was floppy.

Admittedly, there is contact, and possible even enough for a foul, but would you not agree, the player put quite a bit of Hollywood into it?

(I am a European ref so I use Fiba rules, mostly the same ;) ). 1, can’t really see it, need another angle for it. What bothers me is that the lead official looks away right after the shot, he should have looked till the attacker was done with his shooting motion and back on the ground. 2. Definitely a foul, the attacker has the right to land on that spot, contact while being in his act of shooting, definitely a foul. If the attacker landed on the foot of the defender (in Fiba) it would be unsportmanlike/ intentional. 3. 100% flop 4 and 5, can a flop get more easy to see? Both of these are a easy technical foul for me for the flopper

Play #2 I would have a foul. Defender contacts the airborne shooter and he moves into his landing zone. FOUL On the other 4 plays I would agree for no calls. FLOPS. GOOD VIDEO!!!

My thoughts, break down and analysis! Play #1, A1's right foot comes forward several feet (he leaves behind the arc and right foot lands several feet in front of arc) and causes him to land off balance in an attempt to draw the foul call. There was no contact on the arm by #11 defense (watch in slow motion) but of course, the Trail didn't close down until after blowing his whistle. As T, you don't need to STAY at the 28' mark, especially if you have no players to officiate -- close down a step or two. FLOP Play #2, B1 makes contact by jumping toward A1, removing his legal guarding position. There is incidental contact and could be called a foul. There is certainly a good deal of embellishment here but at least this one has contact on an airborne shooter. FOUL Play #3, A1 falls due to lack of balance and legal contact. Maybe not a flop, but definitely not a foul. FLOP Play #4, A1 makes a very good basketball move and there is incidental contact. B1 has LGP but the contact is definitely not enough to cause the player to go down as he did. FLOP Play #5, A1 makes a basketball move and B1 tries to draw a foul with a result of incidental contact. FLOP Keep up the great work Josh!

all good calls(and no calls) but on #2 i strongly believe it should be called a foul,as you mention shooter jumps verticaly and fails to keep his legs straight on the land, i should call a landing foul on defender, he doesn't have LGP, he's moving forward enter's shooter cylinder and doesn't let him land properly. thanks for your time i would be happy to discuss about it with you

#2 - the defender did not allow the shooter to land, I would say foul, he didn't appear to flop. #1 is questionable due to the angle but it looks like #11 hit the shooter on the arm, the others were clearly flops.

Play 2 seemed dangerous. If you come down on someone's foot there can easily be an ankle injury so you split your feet and land soft even taking a fall for safety. That shouldn't be required of a shooter so since the defender made even just a little contact, I'd hope he'd have a foul called.

Play 3, the defensive kid went knee to knee on the player. So he definitely caused him to fall. I'd probably still leave it a no call, since the pass was successful... but you can't call it a flop.

Play 1 looks like a flop, but I feel like the defender that made contact would be called for a foul. Play #2 is a foul. Shooter goes straight up and down. Defender makes contact with his lower body that caused him to be off balance.

In Foul/flop video#2 I think responsible contact of defender. Defender is moving forward the contact was happen and also the offender was still on the air and both feet are off the floor when defender contact to offender. Correct me if Im Wrong. Thanks
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Жыл бұрын
Yes, many agree with you, and by rule, this is considered a foul as contact did occur. The point of the play, however, was we here at OI think the contact was extremely marginal and the player fell on their own accord trying to get a foul. But these are hard to determine and are never a 100% either way. This is why we are officials. To make the judgement and stick with it. Thanks for watching.

Question regarding flopping: have any NFHS officials out there ever enforced rule 10-4-6f and issued a technical for "faking being fouled"? I never have, nor have I ever seen it happen in a high school game, but I wonder why not.
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Жыл бұрын
Can't say if anyone has or hasn't but I can say it is a very rare call. Most likely for the same reason officials never called a technical foul for excessive swinging of elbows or running out of bounds for an unauthorized reason, before these rules were changed.

If a player/s is intentionally flopped, can the official giving a warning or technical?
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute 2 жыл бұрын
You always have an option to warn, for almost anything. But as far as the rules is written, if you are ruling the player was "faking being fouled" then a technical foul is warranted. This is why many officials use the term "flop" which cannot be found in the rules book. It leaves more room for a more comfortable ruling.
