1:25 engineer here. You will not receive any shocks as you are holding onto a plastic handle which will not conduct any electricity, but there is a legitimate risk for a fire from drilling into the battery. That smell was the battery. You should never put water on an electrical fire or a soon-to-be electrical fire.

although in this case it’s not quite an electrical fire - you’re only at 5ish V of potential, unlike what I think most of us would consider “electrical fires” at levels of house current or more (and specifically, when the current or following provides ignitiom/sustaining heat directly). that said, shorting out the terminals (or worse, drilling into the battery) can cause it to enter thermal runaway. in that case it becomes a lithium battery fire, which you still shouldn’t use water on but for a different reason

I'm not good at science but I think the backpack hurt your attempt. It's got some slack and the starps can stretch a bit which means the impact and pressure is applied a bit more gradually. It probably helped prevent injury though, so there's that.
