Can you guess how many people does it take, to prepare VFX for your favorite films? I'm going to show you the visual effects production structure, what kind of artist, and how many of them work there.

As a vfx artist(freelancer) myself while watching any CGI on movies I always think about the hard-work and dedication of the people who doesn't even have the freedom to rest and who constantly give their everything for this industry. But end of the day common audience never realizes it and its all about the movie.

Maybe not paid as much, but more recognition for their work. Some people work months on a shot of 5-10 seconds. Actors have a heavy job as well but I think giving more recognition to the industry would be nice bc without vfx, those actors doesn't look at cool as they do in the movie

Not really, often times VFX artists only work on a few shots from one movie over the span of their production cycle, so it's unlikely anyone would know what's actually going on until the final editing process, unless you happen to work on a shot that contains major plot reveal.

The big question is, do actors drive the movie or the artists who do the CGI work in the background? If you say, the workers behind the scene do the job, then you do not need good actors. But in reality, a good actor can attract a bigger audience and thus more money. Overall, you get more, buy paying more to actors to get good actors. And that's the reason why good actors are paid so well.
@OpenGL4ever2 жыл бұрын
BTW, the same applies to song writers. We all know the singers who are stars, but today, many of them didn't have created the song, they just sing it. It's the song writers in the background that write the song and the music to it, and they earn more by licensing their song to good singers, because the stars will attract a larger audience which means more money for the song writer than he could make alone. In the past, this was different.

If the story sucks and the CGI is bad you cannot justify it by looking at the number of people that worked on it. If it's bad it's bad. If a bridge is built and it collapses on you are you going to sit in the hospital and say "Yeah it hurts but I'm thinking of all those people that built the bridge, so amazing" No.

I wanna make CGI movie by myself long time. But man it takes a lot of hard work really. I love vfx the most and want to become vfx artist. Would love to become environment artist and animation artist as well. Everything needs practice, in order to become perfect/professional artist. I want time to come when everybody will be able to create their own high-end cg film easily. (At least to reduce some hard work a little). And most importantly to reduce budget. Btw. I never though 2080 artists from one of the largest/professional studios were working on avengers: infinity war. Worth 2 billion dollar box office. P.S I m a new subscriber!!

Everyone of the artists involved in these films had to start somewhere. Three years ago I had never tried any 3D software and now I am... certainly not world class, but getting very good at the things that I want to do. My advice would be to just jump in and stick at it. It's far from easy to learn, but the rewards are far more than worth it.

I have no clue where your numbers come from but I have the feeling that you are not counting all the freelancers working on these shows. My personal experience is that 1 comp artist working on a big screen movie delivers about 3-4 shots in average over a post-production time of 3 month. A lot of these shots require cg (modeling, animation, simulation, lighting), 3d tracking, prep, roto just to name the busiest disciplines, plus there are as you mentioned a lot of people around these artists from render wranglers, TDs, Supervisors, producers etc etc. So I would say that it is fair to say that in average a total of 3-4 people are working on one shot. When a typical show of these days has something around 2200 VFX shots then that makes a total of about 2200 ppl. Remember, a lot are freelancers and you don't even find them in the credits. TV shows have a very decent quality these days too, but it is no where near cinema quality coz it might look as good but the tech check (if there is one) is not nearly as hard as in the movies. In TV, when the supervisor likes it it is final in cinema when the supervisor likes it especially the junior artists continue to fight with tech check, sometimes as long as they already worked on the shot.
