Seed potatoes in containers. Just how many do you need? This has been debated for a long time and I am here to tell you that I have been growing potatoes in containers for at least 13 years.
Some people think it's 2 others think it's 4 some would argue more. Here is why I am right on how many seed potatoes you should use in containers.

🥔Another great video, thanks Last year we followed your advise and grew Delicatessen earlies and Desiree. We had a good crop of very good spuds, they didn't get to be very big. They died down fairly early, Delicatessen were ready in 55 days when they were supposed to go to 75 days and Desiree around 85 days when they were not due until 115 days. We put it down to a heat wave. Seed potatoes ordered, looking forward to the new season. Thanks again 🥔

Tony, Your videos are always a treasure, and watching you harvest your potatoes is so enjoyable. This year, my early potatoes are in a new raised bed, filled as I planted them, but I have 4 more pounds of potatoes on the way, which will be going half in buckets and half in the ground to see which works best in our yard. Your bucket growing methods are definitely enticing. I just don't quite have enough potting mix or compost to do as many buckets this year. I'll definitely try it out with what I have, though. Thank you for all the great advice.

Spot on information. Unfortunately many sources of information do not distinguish between early and main crop. I believe it to be an honest mistake that is just not known. I've newly learned it myself. First year I grew in containers I made the mistake of planting earlys and only in the bottom level of container. I did indeed not utilize the container properly and lost out on lots of growing space. This will be my first year of growing main crop. Last year was three early varieties in the ground. I look forward to a large harvest of German Butterball. Thanks for your accuracy!

@@harrybrown3657 Thank you for the feedback. Call where I live, in the US, potatoes are not a primary Gardening plant. So there are not a lot of choices, and you take whatever you can find. @Yoyoyo he doesn't sell them if that's what you meant he just recommends them. I've got 50 of them from his recommendation and there fantastic, light enough that I can still move them when full I've used bigger bags before and couldn't but heavy duty so they don't bend or crack ect. My whole family have been eating potatoes we grew in them from August to now and I'm just at the point I'm going to put them on shepherds pies in the freezer to use them up but otherwise I'd have enough for at least another month. I have a health condition and don't have enough space in my garden so wouldn't have been able to grown that many in the ground.

By watching your video I've actually learned something that was not the theme of this video 🙂 I was wondering how to store my potatoes so they don't start to sprout (I don't have suitable spaces) but now I see that I can leave them in the ground till January. That's pretty handy for me since I grow about 70kg of potatoes altogether and I can only dig out few kilos for cooking and come later for more.

I took notes this time. I finally understand! Still can’t find potato fertilizer and even finding one with the correct NPK percentages is almost impossible. I found one on Amazon that you can add the ingredients together yourself. I can keep the N low and adjust the P & K. Seems like the only choice I have. Nobody sells Blood, Bone and fish meal, either.

Thanks for all your insight Tony. Very helpful! Over the last few years I've always had issues with potato scab in my container grown tatties. Fair enough, they can be peeled and used, but I want to learn how to stop this from happening. For this coming year I've completely washed out container, refreshed the compost and improved the drainage (I'm wondering if the containers were too wet previously). I've also changed supplier of seed potatoes. Any thoughts or insight into why I seem to be under the scab curse? :)
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 2 жыл бұрын
2 reasons for this PH is too alkaline and the second reason is irregular watering. this over wet and then completely drying out stressed the tubers and they form protective scabs as skin stretch

Hi Tony, thanks for another great video and congratulations on winning the award. Probably a silly question, you say plant determinates 2 in bottom 3rd, 2 in middle 3rd, is there a reason why you don't plant 2 in the top 3rd? Also, with the indeterminates, do you earth up as they grow or just fill the tub when you plant them? Thanks Alan Sorry I posted this on the wrong video a few minutes back then couldn't find it to delete it.
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Alan, In the top third you would have tubers pushing through the surface also it would not get the halums enough space to push through properly. In reality it does work but the yield is not much better and there is a huge amount of water required to ensure the bottom gets enough. For best results stick to 4. No need to earth up, that's a growing in the ground thing. Fill the container at time of planting
@clymtc
@clymtc 2 жыл бұрын
just fill the tub when you plant, Tony has another video on his "you-tube-site" showing the planting, it's really good, I recommend watching it.

One thing I learned last year is that you can grow potatoes in pots from just a small piece of spout, while eating most of the potato. Most don't grow big but a small potato is as good; if you already have buckets and compost, you can grow them for free. I grew both determinate and indeterminate. I will be starting some indoors today since the snow is quite deep and the temperature way below freezing, add to that the strong winds in this area. (North Minnesota, US) With the wind, it feels -20 F (-28.9 C). Will take them out when it's not freeze to death temps. Big fan!

Thank you I have learnt so much from your videos. I didn't know you could leave them in the buckets so late (I'm still learning), have you only been able to do that because we've had a pretty mild winter (not including the storms) or could you normally do that in UK weather including frost and snow? I ask because I harvested all mine in September I think (I've been to sleep since then lol). Your potatoes your taking out of that bucket look better than mine do now which are stored in a cardboard box covered in a cold frost free room are starting to sprout but are still firm. I'm intending to make a load of shepherds pies for the freezer so I can use up most of the potatoes and freeze them so they won't go to waste but leaving them in the buckets would be easier for storage. I planted 50 containers so even though courtesy of the rubbish compost they didn't do great I still had a lot of potatoes. When would you have to get them out by? Also even though I chose varieties that are supposed to be good for chips and roast potatoes my home grown ones have only been much good for boiling and some are ok for jacket pots but don't make nice chips which I do by spraying with oil and putting them in the oven. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks sorry for 20 questions.

I’m planting French fingerling and prince of orange potatoes this year. The latter are much like a fingerling. Their development time suggests that they are what you in the UK would call a main crop potato but they are bred to be small. Can I plant them in levels like your early potatoes? I can’t find info anywhere that tells me whether or not they are determinate or indeterminate. Canada seems to just go by how long one can expect to wait for a harvest and so how we might address container growing becomes fuzzy. If you can help…. 👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾🪴
