I’ve been a bike courier in Vienna for about 3 years now and in my opinion the perfect set up is a 3 speed hub with coaster brake for the back wheel and a drum brake/dynamo hub combo on the front wheel. This allows you to have some speeds if needed and work under any weather conditions while still being super low maintenance, which is super important if you’re riding everyday to earn a living.

I have owned many kind of bicycles, from road bikes to mountain bikes and cruisers. I really like my single speed cruiser for riding around my community. It is simple and fun to ride and requires very little maintenance. I would for sure need a multi speed bicycle if I got more serious about cycling and riding much farther because we do have some hills where I live.

I love my single speed bike which was made from old road bike. It's most fun bike I've ridden. It's a way lighter than my (cheap and heavy) 3x7 hybrid bike and it's quite a lot faster. There's a kind of serenity in riding when there's no need to change gears, ie no shifting sounds and chain rattle. Also fact that you always have traction when pedaling is nice, as gear changing should always be done without traction. Bullhorn bars help to attack the hills. My trip distances are usually 20-30 km but sometimes up to 40-50 km. Goes well with single speed (44-18 btw).

That's great mileage on a single speed! A lot of people believe the myth you can't ride that far on a single speed.
@Pianist203
@Pianist203 2 жыл бұрын
@@sixthreezero Thanks. Yeah, people should know it's speed that kills, not mileage. Funnily enough single gear kinda forces to just freewheel when speed gets too fast (unless if you're high cadence spinner), so there's no temptation to pedal downhills, which in return distributes energy usage more evenly along the trip.

Hi I am an beginner and averages around just 10-20 km with a mix of inclines , declines and flat surfaces . I currently own a MTB 24 speed one . But I really love a 12 speed derailer as it is simple to shift and easier . I haven't ridden one of those and I heard they are very expensive . So can you suggest me a good drive train ? . Can I convert a 7 speed to 10 or 12 speed ?

My opinion is this when it comes to 21 24 27 30 33 and so on gears. Experience has taught me that it is you will use different combination with any two chainrings in the front and gears in the back. With a 3 X you will seldom use all three chainrings. You will use a combination of any two of them. For example middle and big or middle and small. With a 2 X you will use the small more(depending on the size of the chainring 36-38) With a 1 X. You only have one chainring to do it all. That again depends on the size of the chainring. Anything under 36 tooth up front is for climbing You have a massive gear range in the back to compensate which make you take longer to find to right gear

I'm actually considering converting my XC bike to SS for a more feedback sort of riding if you will. I'm currently running a 1x12, I purchased the EVRYjourney 24 for my wife as a 3 spd for the slight ease and if she wants to push herself she can leave it on the smallest cog and feel the burn.

@sixthreezero
@sixthreezero 3 жыл бұрын
In your case, in order to choose which gears you are going to have, We'd say you must evaluate your habitual riding. If you ride on flat ground or with little slopes, or if you do not care about achieving high speed on flat, go for the 7 speed. But if you want to overcome steep climbs and also have good speed on the flats, then you may need a bike with more gear ratios. Hope this helps!

As a kid in the '80s, we only had single speed bikes with coaster breaks. We lived in a very hilly suburb. Eventually we graduated to 10 speeds but we rode those single speeds every day up and down hills. I'm confused as to why people say that single speed coaster bikes aren't good for hills. I get that its harder, but why is it not recommended?

I'm looking at city bikes, and I think I should get a 7 speed, as I don't think 3 will cut it. I live in a somewhat hilly area, and i will be commuting and carrying loads sometimes. I don't need to get up the hill fast, just get from A to B. Would a 7 speed be good? I want it to be easier to get home when carrying loads or anything.
@sixthreezero
@sixthreezero 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest! The advantage of a 7-speed, along costing a little less, is that it gives you a wider range of gears. This means that you will have both easier gears for getting up hills as well as higher gears for going faster. :)

@sixthreezero
@sixthreezero 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The number of speeds you should get is based on how you’ll use it. Technically, you only need one speed. Hence, the single-speed bike. On the other hand, in order to relieve some of the legwork on inclines, you will need more than one gear on your bike. As you go uphill and struggle to make progress, having multiple gears allows you to downshift and make the trek easier. On the way down, if you pedal and feel no resistance, you can upshift to a higher gear so you don’t lose control. Hope this helps!

Is there a reason that for the cruisers 3 speeds are more expensive than 7 speeds? Wouldn’t more speeds be better or does it make the bike heavier/harder to ride? Thanks!
@sixthreezero
@sixthreezero 4 жыл бұрын
The 3-speed and the 7-speed options use different systems. While the 7-speed uses a derailleur to shift the chain to different gears, the 3-speed uses an internal hub to change the gear ratios. 3-speed bikes cost more because the internal hub system costs more than the 7-speed derailleur system. However, the internal system does come with an advantage: internal hubs require less maintenance and are easier to adjust.
