In this video, Neil Tappin looks at some of the factors to consider when thinking about how many wedges you should carry. He goes through a series of factors that are well worth keeping in mind - especially if you don't want to get fitted for your wedges. He offers some basic rules of thumb and some insights into his own game which should help you understand this area of your own bag line-up that little bit better.

I carry 4 wedges: PW (set) 46*/2*-114yds [loft/bounce-full distance], Gap 50*/6*-102, Sand 56*/8*-87 and Lob 62*/6*-72. They give lots of options in pitching, chipping and from the sand with the Lobby being my 'OMG-Emergency!' club, rather than a regular chipper. In fact, around the greens I generally like to keep the ball close to the ground if I can!

I play a 44°, 48°, 52° and a 56°. Dropped the lob wedge as I was struggling with it and find the 56 gives me enough loft for courses I play.

I am surprised no-one has mentioned the quality of your golf ball in all this! You NEED a good quality, urethane cover golf ball to hit quality wedge shots with good spin. They are more expensive, but all the tournament pro golfers use them. The most common on tour are the Titleist ProV's, but Srixon Z-Stars, TaylorMade TP5s and Callaway TourSofts are examples of quality urethane cover golf balls which give good wedge shot results. Personally, I like the Z-Stars because I can get ProV-like results for almost half the cost!

My set PW is 46, 50, 58. Use to play a 56 in there with a 60 but bent the 60 to 58 and now can hit all the shots I need to. Plus side is I get to add another club at the top of the bag.

Only two wedges for me. A 50° with 8° bounce and a 54° with 10°. Shorter than 80-yards and I can start to open the face to control distance, or bump and run it low if needed. Well maybe I have three if considering the pitching wedge in the set. But I use the PW for full shots or to pitch on the green from 5-10 yds. depending where the flag is. I used to use a 60° a few years ago but it was only useful in super tall grass near the green or something. I was never able to hit full shots with it. Then I learned to hit different shots with my 50 & 54 and got rid of the 60°.

45 PW and a 56 does me. When I get the chance I spend half hour or so doing variety of shots with the 56 my go to club but one that I will only use out to a maximum of about 40 yards, anything more and I’m coping with the PW. I may try a 58 deg next season though

I carry 5 wedges, 47, 52, 56, 60 and 64. Not because I'm super long off the tee but because chipping and wedge play is the strongest part of my game. For example if I'm chipping from the back of a green to a speedy, downhill slope I love chipping with my 64. Or chipping over a sand trap to a close pin. I also don't like partial wedge swings when I can avoid them. I know how far each club will go and how far it should run out after it lands. I also will frequently chip with my 7, 8 or 9 irons. I was inspired many years ago by a book written by the great Paul Runyan, one of the original chipping greats!

You are the wedge man! Even more than my 4 wedges, but I agree - nothing like having lots of options around the greens, and you can get out of some serious trouble spots with a 64* wedge. I am currently carrying a 62* lob wedge, but it's a stroke saver, that's for sure. These high lofted wedges do take practice to get used to, and they're not for hackers or faint-of-heart, but once you're comfortable, they are so much fun!

@@drrob1963 LOL, we're on the same wavelength! I threw the 64 in the mix on a whim thinking it probably wouldn't work out and I was surprised. It's helped me a lot more than hurt me. I don't really like opening the face of a wedge because I never feel like I'm aiming good. I was also surprised that I can hit a full shot from about 40 - 50 yards with a pretty good success rate.

I have a 45* PW, 55* SW (high bounce) and 60* LW (low bounce). For me the PW is my general use club from 100 yards in. The SW and LW are specialty clubs for me when I need flop shots or difficult conditions requiring more loft or bounce
@drrob1963

45* to 55* is a big gap in your wedges! Have you thought about adding a gap wedge with a 50* loft & mid-bounce sole (about 8-10*)? It might give you more options from that 100yd length as well as more choices chipping and in LONG bunker shot situations.

@@drrob1963 I did consider adding a 50* GW when I was playing thrice a week earlier. Then I would hit full SW shots for example. Today anything from 100 yards in is PW unless I need a specialty shot or the lie dictates it. My PW is the go-to club

I play a 47*(pw), a 52*(gw), and a 57*. I mostly use the 52*, unless the shot requires something different. The 57* only comes out when I’m short-sided to a tight pin, or from a green side bunker. I’m a scratch player, and highly recommend that players get really good with one wedge. I don’t recommend that wedge being a 60*.

I took my medicine. I do love my 60° lob wedges, and am fairly decent for my level, but the mishits are punishing and bad shots on soft ground are really bad. I've found using my high bounce vokey 52.12 around the green to be the most forgiving, getting me closest to the pin. Still getting used to opening it up and leaning shaft for different lies etc, but to my surprise its becoming my favourite club in the bag. What type of wedge do use for your 57? I'm trying to find a versatile wedge that can be opened up or used in bunkers.

You have an exact clone playing golf in Canada - that is my exact setup and handicap. I play a Mizuno T22 47, then a Mizuno T20 56/14 bent to 52/10 (I love this setup as it is a C-grind with heel&toe relief and I use it as my goto 80% chipping & pitching club), and my final club is a T20 56/10 bent to 57.5/11.5. I do go back & forth with this club and a 62 original Taylomade Hi-Toe ATV Grind if the course has hard sand. Since I do basically everything with my hacked 52/10, I also sometimes just use the 62 ATV-grind instead of the 57/11 as it is so flexible for emergencies around the green.

I can play my 52* low, and running. Or, open it up, to expose some more bounce. The 52* gives you a little more forgiveness on strike, and landing spot, compared to a 60*. I’m a scratch player, so I’m not trying to get too cute with most shots. I’m trying to save par. Period. I’m very disappointed, and feel like I’ve hit a poor chip, if it doesn’t finish in the 3’ circle around the hole. You gotta remember…. Tour pros are playing the firmest, fastest greens in the world. Most of us aren’t. No need for all of that loft, in most cases for us. It just adds an element of difficulty that isn’t necessary, in my opinion. Plus, chips have more chance of rolling in, with less loft. But hey…. To each his own.

Hi guys I’m a beginner to golf and I don’t want to pay for a wedge fitting so I am hoping someone can help me please. My PW is lofted at 41 and my AW is lofted at 46. Full swing PW goes 105 yards and full swing AW goes 90 yards. My question is would just adding a sand wedge be ok or do I also need to add a lob wedge? Also how do you know the level of bounce you’d need without getting a fitting or does it not matter much? Any help would be much appreciated

Hi T - welcome to golf! I don't know everything but I've been a keen A-grade amateur since the 70s. I honestly would suggest getting a wedge lesson (or two) from a local, reputable teaching pro, including suitable wedge additions to your set - it could be invaluable! It's more than just having the clubs in your bag, it's about knowing when & how to use them - and if you can get that right, you could knock quite a few shots off your best score. If you watch a pro tournament on TV or youtube, you'll quickly see how good those guys/girls are with their wedges, and how many shots they save around the greens! And a lot of that is good club selection and practice. There are good instruction vids online from wedge masters like Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player and Tiger. Regarding your set, I would suggest adding two wedges - a gap wedge of 52* loft, and a lofted sand wedge with 58* loft. Both should have a wide sole and about 8*-10* bounce. This should give you plenty of options on both full shots, and at short range for chipping, pitching and bunker play. Probably the best short game advice I received was "Always play the simplest shot that makes sense". For example, if you are 5 yards off the green on fringe or fairway - putt [don't try a lofted shot], but if its 5 to the green and in long grass, do not putt - you may need a wedge to drop it on the green. Hope this helps - Enjoy!

LPGA average is 107yrds. I realize that ALL youtube commenters are carrying their drivers well above 320 yrds and PW somewhere around 200yrds, but in the real world 132yrds with a PW is quite long.
