Dear lord this puzzle. It took me over an hour, and I had to find first an X-wing, then I found a jellyfish (which later separated into two X-wings), then I found several swordfishes (two of which lead to a hidden triple), then I found a Y-wing (first Y-wing I was able to spot by myself, progress!) which lead to finding multiple hidden triples, then I found a final X-wing which made the whole puzzle collapse. Now time to see the more efficient way of solving this puzzle.

46:23 I basically followed the same solving pattern as Simon, although twice as slow of course. Spotting the x-wing on 9s forcing another seperate x-wing on 9s was mind boggling, and very satisfying.

Watching you solve this one I think *finally* got me to understand the X-wing concept at a basic level. I was able to spot a double X-wing on 5s in 4 different columns and it helped me crack the puzzle! I appreciate your videos! Subscribed.

Phew! I understand the logic of x-wings. Spotting them and seeing why they help me during a solve is another story!

This puzzle solves quite differently when you follow through on that early X-wing on the 9s before moving on. There's a 79 in the top central box that collapses to just a 7, gives you a bunch more solves right off the bat at least if you've ground out all the pairs first like I tend to do. Thanks for this video. I used to be able to solve some seriously difficult Sudokus (on paper) but had forgotten almost all the techniques I'd so painfully worked out. I can't even remember whether this was one of them, but it may have been. The other day I was doing one, found what I now know is called an X-wing, just absolutely knew it was significant, but wasn't able to make anything of it. I'm not sure now whether there actually wasn't anything to be made, or whether I overlooked to eliminate numbers from one or more critical cells. Oh well. Now it's fallen into place!

Just what one expects in a puzzle devoted to training X-wings: a jellyfish in 2s. (Later) followed by an almost useless finned X-wing in 9s. Then I realized that I didn't notice a 6 ruling out a cell, and I could place a few other digits. So finally, I spot my first true X-wing, in 6s. 7:10 This was the second X-wing in 6s that I found. The first was based on a 69 pair that hasn't yet been entered on this grid. 14:40 The jellyfish in 2s let me place the 2 in row 9 much earlier. That led to the 24 pair and the 69 pair in column 7, which led to my first X-wing in 6s. 16:10 I found the X-wing in 9s much earlier, because of the 69 pair. Without the top corner 4, it was only a useless finned X-wing. In the middle of the solve, there was a 679 Y-wing or bent triple in rows 4 and 9, and columns 3 and 9. It was one of those useless things, although it gave practice in spotting them.

You only need the first x-wing to solve the rest with normal sudoku techniques. Pencil the 6s in the bottom left square. That forces the bottom right cell to be a 6. From then on no more x-wings.

Despite it being an exercise in xwings, when I was at a position similar to 9:18, I happened to notice r3c4/r3c9/r4c3/r4c9 would be a deadly rectangle unless r3c4/r4c9 are both 7. Things diverged for me quite a bit from there, but I wound up solving it in 17 minutes. Still quite a few xwings!

There was a very early X Wing on 6s starting in column 9 (where you started with the 7s X Wing) and column 3. Then, when you find the 6 in R1-C5, you get another X Wing on 6s in columns 2 & 7

Because of the way I did the puzzle -- finding a jellyfish in 2s before anything else -- I found that other X-wing first.

I am confused, the first X wing is about 6 minutes in based on 6s in columns 3 and 9 rows 3 and 9 then at about 13.26 Simon says he can't see an x wing there because 6 can go in other columns in row 9?

Until this puzzle I had trouble with xwing logic. I'm sort of new to the world of puzzles. Could you do a textbook style tutorial on the logic of human solving sudoku? I'm still maybe 10+ minutes behind you in a lot of these. i feel like I'm missing something.
@travholt
@travholt 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, 10+ minutes behind one of the best sudoku solvers in the world isn't that bad when you're "sort of new" - even considering he talks and explains while solving. And there are a lot videos on this channel about basic solving techniques. It's hard to do just one video on how to solve sudokus, because puzzles can be very different in terms of difficulty and techniques required.

X-wings are my bane. I can find some, and I will revisit this puzzle in a day or two. I seemed to miss place numbers and ran into more false solves than ever before. Maybe I'm off my meds. A great puzzle as always, I hope it will help me see potential x-wings. I am a patreon and I enjoy the sandwich sudoku game, I have 2 to go. There is going to be one without any numbers, isn't there?
@CrackingTheCryptic
@CrackingTheCryptic 4 жыл бұрын
That's actually impossible! (If there are no 1/9s given in a standard sandwich Sudoku then there would have to be 2 solutions to the puzzle (as you can simply switch all the 1s and 9s round and nothing else will change!)).

Simon regularly does other types of logic puzzles on the channel. Besides sudoku variants like the popular sandwich sudoku, he's also done compass, skyscraper, and star battle puzzles. He often invites people to send new puzzles to his twitter or email, so I'm sure he would like to receive your puzzle from Denmark. Seems in the last month, he has done about a dozen puzzles submitted by subscribers.
