Well, everybody knows that right now this is the age of technology and of media. Everyone has an Ipad; you know, gone are the days of the Gameboy. Now it's the Ipad, now it's the Iphone... now it's, you know, there's KZfaq on there and everything else. Now it's just the days of going into a restaurant and you have to whip out the Ipad for the child. What kind of impact does that have on the child's development? Well, it has a lot of impact on them and not for the good! Sometimes it can help them with learning numbers and letters and there are some great games and that in about ten to twenty minutes a day max.
When you're starting to use these things in place of other ways of learning, then it poses a problem. We're all in an age where communicating and engaging with people face to face is limited because everyone's already texting and emailing. So, we have to be very cognizant and very mindful that, you know, when we grew up as parents we were talking to each other and playing with each other. You want to be able to provide those opportunities for your children. So, if they're playing a game and watching TV, chances are they're not playing with a child and they're not learning common social skills. Everything that your child learns is through experience, through doing things with their peers. And also, they learn through observations. So, if they're watching you on your phone all day they may think 'well, that's the way to do it these days'.
So, you also want to remember that what you do impacts your child's development as well. There are two things to know here; one is if your child is playing on the video games, watching TV, and are not outside on the playgrounds and are not engaging with their friends, then they are not playing and they should be. Two is that the impact that these toys have on your child can be significant because it's a lot of input. It's a lot of visual stimulation and you might find that they are not able to actually attend to people then because they are so used to looking at a screen rather than a person.
Providing opportunities for your child to use an Ipad may not be detrimental; you can have them play a game for ten to twenty minutes a day, whatever time a day that is, and that's fine. But, once you begin to introduce that at meal time when out at restaurants consider this: your child will then always associate the Ipad with the restaurant. They'll never be able to have a meal and talk to you about their day because they'll just automatically assume that they're sitting at a restaurant having that Ipad. So, remember to keep the Ipad for times of learning and to encourage your child to connect with you, engage with you, and the same with their peers at meal time and at play time.
Remember that these opportunities are so vital for your child to learn and grow because they learn through experience. Also through playing with their peers, and not exclusively through media and technology.

I am a mother to a 7 month old so the impact of technology is important to me so I can decide how to introduce an appropriate amount as my child grows, I really like how she said 10 to 20 min a day is ok because there are great tools that technology has to offer for learning. But my favorite part that she spoke on was role modeling and encouraging behavior other than using ipad or watching tv. Encourage social interaction and getting outside to play with other kids, and even making your child have conversations at meals with you to keep working their social skills and keep interations with others as an important part of the day. And also watch the amount of time you use technology around your child, if they come to talk to you and your looking at your phone they can tell your attention is not 100 percent on what they are saying and that can hurt their self esteem and feel that talking isnt as important as what is on the phone or Ipad, which will only encourage them to spend more time on their devices, and no one wants to make their child feel that way!

I definitely agree with the speaker on this video. I have also observed with my kid with autism that she learns fast by being observant and being engaged with the people around. Lesser or no screen time for the kid really pays off, when I got to be online especially with my work and on my youtube channel as well, i go to our room and work from there. The only time I get to held my phone is when someone is calling or trying to send me urgent messages.

Rant begin: do people not understand the issue that limiting children on technology places them in worse positions in the future? Now you shouldn't let you're kids never see the light of day and make no friends, but limiting kids to rediculous times such as 20 minutes a day, puts them behind once they grow up. Everyone else knows how to use a PC to download files, zip and unzip them, program, learn things online, and your kid will have the technological prowess of an 80 year old. Many jobs now, and at least 10% more in the next decade will use technology as a base. Working your way through systems will need to be second nature. The thought process of, technology is dangerous and my kid will be kidnapped because they play this online game I don't understand, is a slippery slope. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's evil, or bad. Don't put your child at a disadvantage by limiting their time to use the internet to extreme small sectors like 10 minutes a day.

I think she has some good points as well. But I don't think she takes into account children who suffer from social anxiety, or introverts. These are children who prefer to keep to themselves because it's draining to them to be around other people so consistently and for extended periods of time.

When you text a lot you are losing the ability to communicate. Texting is the worst way to communicate, often times people will take your text in a different way than intended, it's so much better to call the person. People are becoming afraid to actually talk.

Everything is in moderation. Parents should engage with their kids a lot more, even through iPads or computers, consoles. Don't just give your kid the device for them to leave you alone. Give them the device and show them how to use some apps or programs. Teach them how to draw and make the drawings move. Teach them how to program stuff. Teach them how to use those devices creatively, so they can build on that. But, as said, everything in moderation. The woman is right - video games, especially the colorfull and shrill ones, are waaaay too stimulating for a childs brain, which gets used to this overabundance of stimuly and becomes bored quite fast, if there are none that are this strong. This is why children get needy and greedy with the devices. The here and now doesn't fascinate their brains anymore as it's pretty slow, dull and silent. I'm seeing this with the kids of my friends and I'm hoping I'll not do those mistakes. Thank goodness I'm a biologist and understand how the brain works and develops. My plan is to let my kids play outside as much as possible and engage them with handwork and such. I'll play games with them, but never past a certain time limit. I'll play games myself, but never past a certain timelimit, so they can learn from example, that moderation is possible. I'll teach them how to use these devices creatively. I'll teach them that they are not just toys but also have access to an abundance of information. I hope I'll be able to do this and keep up with technology.

The comment section is duh.. They didn't even understand the whole video. It's specifically for CHILDREN. Nowadays, technlogy is a necessity for a grown up but not for a child. It distract them and yes, they might be better at technical skills because of techs but they would be physically and socially weak. We all should live in reality. Digital is not good if we become too dependent to it.

I do agree with the video. But Technology is very important now-a-days and even children need to keep up with the technology. But for sure it should be in moderation. Cell phone and iPads should be used in a proper and creative way for the development of the child and not just to play video games as kids really get addicted to such games. It even would have some health problems in the child. Along with technology kids equally need to spend their time outside playing with friends and family and exploring the nature.

This woman has quite a narrow perspective. She doesn't have an idea of how complex video games are in today's world. The amount of story telling and the detail put into the experience, like the graphics, the ambient, and the mechanics are clearly not to be experienced in a ten to twenty minute session a day. I sincerely pity her kiddos. Although she does have a point about children lacking social interaction, that's only the case if they are addicted. And that only happens if the parents can't make them understand that social interaction, learning and other hobbies are fun too. Often children find their refugee into the video games world, because their parents don't listen to them when they need it, or there's a lot of household conflict. There's a huge misunderstanding about video games that older people have. Of course, there are really low quality video games, like Candy Crush. But also there are low quality books, operas, and paintings. It's just a matter of being selective and understand that video games are nothing more but a more recent form of art, which one can lose himself into and think, make connections and empathize with other people's stories, just like a good book. There's also competitive video games, that bring a similar feeling to competitive sports, like football, basketball or tennis. The feeling of testing your skills against other opponents, improving and showing creativity through your capacities. So if you're a parent reading this, please keep an open mind when limiting your children time passed on technology devices. Instead make them be smart about their usage, teach them the benefits of other activities, like taking care of health, education and relationships, and more importantly, take a look at the relationship you have with your kids. They maybe isolating because everything else makes them suffer.

I myself, believe balance is key. Too much or too little of most things in life can be harmful. Extremes usually are not healthy. I have someone I love dearly, who I want the best for, in my life that spends 90% of his time on electronic devices. I desperately want him to spend time with me and do other fun things. I know games and what not are fun and can be addictive, however, there needs to be a balance. I wish all the parents out there wisdom and patience to teach and guide the ones they love.

Please stop giving your children a screen to stare at in restaurants, in the car, etc. Young kids learn by watching and absorbing things around them. How people are interacting with each other, how they talk, what they are doing, why they are doing what they do... with their head down in a screen they are missing out on thousands of little signals and learning experiences every day, and the questions that come with them . If you can't engage or communicate with your child in these situations, or selfishly have them stare at a device to keep them "busy" and not bother you - it's on you. Bad parenting.

So let’s say a kid is watching a physics video or learning how to fix something. Is that harmful to absorb? Also with not talking to other people, electronics can be a last resort. The human brain cannot contain all of the knowledge in the world, and some people don’t know certain things. Overall, electronics aren’t as bad as you make them sound.

@@dankpretzels5663 learning vids aren't harmful. Nor are movies, in themselves, although too much passive entertainment, which doesn't require mental participation, isn't very good for a kid. Thats not my point. My point is what kids will miss out on in terms of real life if they are absorbed in a screen.

Brian let’s say another thing, like when a kid is really stressed out, or even adults, which are more common to have stress issues. Is it bad for them to vent through passive entertainment, or should they just try to brush it off?

@@dankpretzels5663 not really important. Who said it was bad to use passive entertainment for venting purposes?
