How Medieval Islam Thrived During Europe's Dark Ages | An Age Of Light | Absolute History

Along with Christianity, the Dark Ages saw the emergence of another religion - Islam. After emerging in the Near East, it spread across North Africa and into Europe in such a short time that there was originally no art. In more settled times, highly decorated mosques began to be built based on the prophet Mohammad's own home. Their architectural and scientific achievements, including the mapping of the stars, dwarfed anything existing in the western world. Januszczak visits the Dome of the Rock, desert palaces forgotten by modern Islam with their more sensual artwork, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun where it was believed Noah's Ark landed, and the Mosque of Cordoba. He identifies the Nilometer used to measure the flood of the Nile and uses an astrolabe that Muslims used to find the direction of Mecca.

Looks nice, but is entirely uninformative on why Islam thrived during this period Too much focus on architecture and iconography (products of thriving society). Not enough focus on history; the conquest, how early Islamic society was organized, or what values allowed Islam to overtake the regions it did (reasons societies thrive).

There are many inaccuracies, more specifically about Islam, promises made in the Quran, and what the religion itself stands for, it may be quite possible that some of the artifact's and buildings (like the bath house), are not to be credited directly to Islam, but to Arabs or some other sect, its important not to mix culture with religion. Its also important to hear from a professional scholar or professor (specializing in Islam, or believing in Islam) to speak on this and analyze this, this film felt kind of oversimplified and misinterpreted. this is what I noticed as a Muslim and also as someone who has for long now been closely learning about Islamic art, history and architect.

I am neither Christian not Islamic but it fascinates me how many people comment negatively on both religion when their only knowledge is what they perceive from movies and tv. The extreme of both these religions have a lot to answer for, both through history and present day. For the lay person in present day their isn't a huge difference except for their rulers who use religion as a control. Check out Jesus in the Islamic faith as an example of both religions.

You're not wrong. Being from what is for all intents and purposes a Christian country (America) I would wager that the average Christian/American doesn't even know that both Muslims and themselves believe in the same god. It's sad really; ignorance has such horrid consequences.

Says the guy who's knowledge clearly doesn't extend much further than those movies and tv. Speaking as a former muslin, still living in a muslin country, for example, I can't come out as an atheist because that has the death penalty. conversion too. This is the same throughout most muslim countries btw, and informal mob "justice" is done in places where it's not illegal to be an atheist. That's just one of the many many current day differences that you people are blind to. Christianity used to be a dogmatic and oppressive force but it has reformed and lost much of it's political power, Islam on the other hand has only grown less tolerant and more totalitarian

@@Hastenforthedawm That is a myth created during the Modern Era, from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. Not only were the Middle Ages an incredibly long period, with varying states of development throughout time and country, but throughout most of the Middle Ages immense progress was taking place, technologically and intellectually. The term "Dark Ages" was invented and used to make the classical period and revival seem superior, to put it simply. Nowadays, historians generally agree that the term is inaccurately derogatory and opt for the usage of the terms the Middle-Ages or the Medieval era.

Just saw this, amazing coverage of Islamic architecture espc the nile column structure to measure tax with flood levels. (I really need to look into the fiqh of that) But why does bro give off predatory vibes? 🤣 like I was tryna ignore it until I heard him spew off his perennialist oriental interpretations superimposed on Islam through the ummayyid ruling class's Indulgences into worldly pleasure. Those carved images at Qaiser Amra' have nothing to do with Islam or its teachings, it can rightly be called historic Muslim architecture but its an injustice to say it is 'Islamic architecture', I.e inspired by the teachings of Islam. Islam would have those images destroyed and the perpetrators punished. Another thing that struck out to me was his insistence on fulfilling his 'finding elysium on earth' fantasies and subjugating Islamic architecture to these wild interpretations, it surely shows a lack of belief in the Hereafter but more importantly a reflection of western ideas and enlightenment philosophies, particularly those of Nietzsche where these philosophies surmised God's demise wa iyazubilla' and therefore looked towards becoming gods themselves through knowledge to drive progressive technologies, human rational thinking to replace religion & be our judging morals, and attaining power to enforce these ideals across the world (like the colonial Europeans did). This is modernism, which ofcourse failed in its vision after peaking in genocidal wars, famine and terror the century prior. Now with a failed broken capitalistic society in the 21st century, these ideals of 'elysium on earth' were proved to be an unachievable endgame, thus giving birth to the nihilistic pursuits of postmodernism like a phenoix arising in fiery arrogance from it's pharaonic ashs. Give it another 300 yrs before they conjure up another philosophy to follow & also prove wrong 😂 Point to take away is, Muslim don't wanna experience jannah on earth or re-create it here, it contradicts the Quranic and Hadith-based teachings of Islam, rather, this man is superimposing his western metaphysical ideas onto Islamic architecture and something we should be weary about when listening to the speech of the kuffar. They will corrupt your aqeedah in one way or another, his appreciation of Islamic architecture and marvelous wonders gifted to the world yet not seeing its true gift of guidance is a testament to this fact and we should do well not to forget it.
