Mercedes AMG has cranked out a gem of an engine. The hand built M139 is a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder that makes 416 horsepower! That makes it the most powerful turbo four-cylinder engine currently in a production car! The M139 engine is used the Mercedes GLA45, CLA45, and A45 vehicles. 416 horsepower at 6,750 RPM and 369 lb-ft at 5,000 RPM. With a displacement of 1991 cc, the M139 makes over 208 horsepower per liter! It also has some of the highest peak combustion pressures of any engine.
How did Mercedes do it? Clever engineering. From the engine layout, to the roller-bearing twin-scroll turbos, to the block and forged internals, to the cylinder head, to the spray on cylinder liners, the engine is packed with brilliant engineering features. How does it all work? Check out the video for full details!

This thing needs a supercharger though, looks like you have to rev the crap out of it to hit peak torque and hp. My twin charged volvo s90 does it right, minus about 100hp. It can use the supercharger and turbo at the same time and I've seen it pushing 23psi.

Mercedes has ALWAYS been at the forefront of car technology. They have pioneered almost all major improvements on cars. They were one of the first cars to have fuel injection in the early 1950s. Of course Mercedes is going to do it better, they are anal retentive Germans. I love Mercedes, but theres something to be said for Honda engines reliability and being able to handle power. I have seen many tuners be able to get 450hp out of their 90s K motors and the new type r civic can produce over 350hp with a simple engine tune and while it may not be as much as the Mercedes, its nothing to sneeze at.

In my experience, I’ve found the heat saturation gains from mounting the turbocharger on the firewall-side of the bay can also aid in catalyst light-off and therefore reduce tailpipe emissions. I would not be surprised to hear this was also a consideration with the new EU 7 targets on the horizon.

Not many people in the world share your talent. My engineering experience is limited to watching nerdy videos on KZfaq. The way you compare things is always a relevant comparison, the way you explain things is always so easy to understand but still very detailed and technical. No fancy computer graphics but you don't need to, I can pause the video and analyse your whiteboard and it all just makes sense. Every piece of data you use is valid and if you have to estimate then you research the heck out of it to make sure your estimate can't be more than maybe 1% out. You carefully select the right words to use so there's never any confusion about what you're saying. Every video you make is like this. Really impressive. Thank You.

Thanks Jason, for explaining some very complicated technology extremely well. The specific output of modern engines astounds me, having become interested in cars in my middle teens in the early 60s. At that time, American muscle was hitting about 1 hp/cu in on the hottest cars (about 61 hp/l.). The fastest European cars were getting close to 100hp/l, which was about what race cars got. I’m fascinated by this technology which makes more than 200 hp/l possible ON A PRODUCTION CAR! 😵

@freezeme360 Yeah, the 70s was a performance wasteland known for bringing us the 165hp Corvette. Early emissions equipment and super high gas prices didn't exactly make the case for the big block 60s American muscle. The thing that blows my mind is cars have gotten heavier, more complicated, more powerful, safer, and MORE RELIABLE. That's some pretty amazing progress.

At this point I am assuming Mercedes said nothing about MPG and therefore the difference is marginal or not as good. The engine would seem to be more efficient, but is generating a lot more power. I am not an engineer, but it seems the basic answer is what is greater the increase in power or the increase in efficiency?
@LocPH.
@LocPH. 4 жыл бұрын

Another note on addition of PFI: it is very difficult to get a DI-only engine to meet soot requirements as there’s often a lot of trapped fuel, so a side benefit would be better performance on PM emissions. Also, PFI generally handles low load conditions (idle) in a much smoother fashion than DI. It’s crazy how much advanced tech goes into the modern ICE!

Interestingly enough, many diesel engines have peak cylinder pressure about 200bar, and they last for many many miles. This one is at 160bar, Mercedes could make it long lasting if they wanted to. But instead, the cylinder is made from aluminum, coated with some smartass coating. And the piston skirt is of minimal size. So yes, this engine will wear out quickly.

The Offenhauser 2.65 L 4 cylinder, on the other hand, ran reliably at 1000+ HP, as the simple 4 cyl was anvil-tough and totally reliable. By the mid-70's the Offy's were rule-booked down to less than 800 HP, plus not allowed to upgrade to electronic fuel injection, so that the Cosworth V8 could "win" by the better efficiency of its electronic fuel injection. The Offy's could still dominate the Cosworth's during a race, but would run out of fuel and not be able to finish the race. On a level playing field, the Offy 4 cylinder literally blew the Cosworth V8 off the track!

Port injectors also increase the amount of time that the fuel has to mix, and increase the amount of fuel that you can inject outright. Many high performance engines, including aftermarket setups, use both at once. The fact that the port injectors remove intake valve deposits is a nice longevity bonus so it makes sense to mention it.

Do you have any reference data on roller bearing vs. journal bearing turbos in terms of improved spool? I've hear, mostly anecdotally that journal bearings, given they essentially float on a layer of oil, can spool just as quickly as ball bearing. But all the data seems biased.

Hey Mike! Recent mech eng grad here. Bearing selection is actually quite a complicated thing and was absolutely boring to learn. The largest supplier NSK has a website that gives a bit of insight on how to make these selections. You were right on how journal bearings work. They are what we call hydrodynamic bearings. Though a common issue with journal bearings is at start up in abscence of oil pressure, you have the journals scratch the bearing walls and create additional load and wear. For a ball bearing that should be less of an issue. Furthermore. Ball bearings have a finite life whereas journal bearings theoretically have infinite life and wear very little. Another fun fact is that journal bearings are more expensive to make and cost more to maintain. But they are also less loud too. And lastly journal bearings require more axial space to package and ball bearings require more radial space. That one doesn't matter too much for turbos.

@@jasonsun3695 Hey Jason! thanks for the detailed reply! Interesting info. To go back to my original question I still wonder what the spool data looks like. Given your confirmation on how journal bearings work, I still wonder which application would hit top RPM faster. I would assume that the CF on a journal bearing, aside from startup, might be less than ball bearing but I'm guessing here. I'll check out NSK's website, might be some data there.

@@miketurco5282 ahhh. Well spool is just generally a function of friction at startup. Ball bearings do have less friction at startup due to less contact area and constant lubricant presence. The data on rpms graphs you might have to look for turbo manufacturers. They would do those testings

Very thanks for this video. Please, I'd like to know if there is anything special about the oil pump. Thank you.

I drive a 2018 Mercedes Metris cargo van with a turbocharged 2 liter 4 cylinder, and it moves like a strong 6 cylinder. Very impressive and it has exactly half the horsepower of the engine he's talking about here.
