The technology that delivers the seamless internet service you enjoy today was engineered over the last 40 years, but few users and even developers know how it actually works.
Understanding the internet fundamentals beyond the web browser and HTTP request gives you the edge in any discussions about technology, helping you take a more active role in shaping its future.
In this video you'll learn how the internet works by following a real message under the sea to France. By following its journey, you'll finally understand terms like 'IP address', 'packet', and 'router', but most importantly you'll appreciate the remarkable technology that enables the internet to function reliably 24/7.

Additional info : IP address can either be IPv4 or IPv6. The second approach is the newest version of IP address format.

Additional info 2 : In addition to IP address, a packet also contain a MAC address, which specified which hardware or network interface control (NIC) is destinated to.

Additional info 3 : When we make a request on computer, such as connecting to google, the request will be wrapped in the format required by various protocols in your computer. Then it will past to NIC to make the final wrap before sending it to the next device. When the next device received your packet, it will check for error in your data and unwrapped it to reveal the IP address. After checking out the route table, the data will again be wrapped by NIC with a new sender MAC address before sending it to the next device.

Additional info as well: first cable is usually not a true first leg. There is usually an internal router on the PC to handle multiple MACs transparently without the need to specify outbound hardware to issue a request.
