Define "newer" in the label newer bands. If you mention Mastadon, Meshuggah, Lamb of God or Gojira then you're a little late to the show. They've been around for 20+ yrs. Newer is no more than 10 yrs as a paid professional band. Lamb of God imo is the natural evolution of thrash metal but really when I listen to Death, that's as close as the early stuff gets to LoGs style. Metallica hasn't been metal since the drop of Sandman.

Loved the breakdown uncle Ben, the tone was badass as well. Lots of people consider the black album the start of the descent for Metallica and I'll never understand why. One of the things I like the most about them is that they have so much variation in the music style from album to album. I love to hear an album and put myself in their shoes at that time... what it must have been like to be 22 years old and writing songs like Creeping Death or Battery but also what was it like at 34 years old writing Load and Reload. We watched and listened to them grow up, 42 years later and these guys are still writing amazing music, the new album is brilliant IMO.

8:44 - This is what I love about Metallica. They're very reminiscent of Beethoven in how they take one theme or motive, develop it for all its worth and get everything they can out of it. They do the exact same thing in Master of Puppets, except it's in Concerto form instead of Verse-Chorus.

Stellar breakdown, man. Some bands need to learn that sometimes simplicity is the way to go. Nothing wrong with complex music, it has its place, but too much going on in a single song can be overwhelming to the ear and ward off casual listeners. Enter Sandman is a great example of simplicity done right. Super catchy tune that doesn’t feel boring. Enough variations to keep the listener engaged for the duration of the track.

I have favorite songs, but here's a bunch that I have been listened to recently while I've been driving Doordash: Chasing Light / Inamorata / Crown Of Barbed Wire / Shadows Follow / Harvester Of Sorrow / For Whom The Bell Tolls / Creeping Death / Lords Of Summer / My World / The House That Jack Built / Hit The Lights / The Thing That Should Not Be / Broken Beat Scarred

Well, Jaymz did his rituals, grabbed his axe, and wrotw it. Showed it to Mr U, who stripped it down, learned it, and tweaked the arrangements. Then there was some kind of fight. We couldn't hear well, they had shut the door by then. A few Bangs went by. 4 days later Bob came & Rocked the shit out of it. Turned it upside down & chopped it in half. Then more fights. And later Jason came by to track bass. Then party time. Later Kirk called up a week after, to ask where the studio was located, as he couldn't find it. He finally showed up, laughing, and tracked solos for a day or two. Then split up respective ways. But during the night Mr U sneaked into the studio & slightly raised the faders of tracks 1 & 2, on the mixing board, while boosting 1 db extra on highs & mids on the eq for both tracks. It definitely paid off 💰

I always compared it to Pachelbels Canon in D where the first part of the song was the slow construction of the riff, then the riff at full force, then the deconstruction of the riff to its bare components. Don't know if that was an intentional influence, but I see the similarities none the less. Oh, and Disposable Heros, All Nightmare Long, Moth to Flame, and Shadows Follow.

It's a great song that catches your ear, it's their "Paranoid" and their most popular song but isn't in the running for best metal song ever. If it's possible to pick one, I think it's "Am I Evil?", their cover of the Diamond Head song.

I was already a Metallica fan when the Black Album came out but when they started playing Sandman on the local radio, it got my friends who were no where near being Metallica fans jacked up. It was a song everyone from the casual listener to the established fan could get into. It's no wonder that album is the massive hit that it is. Great analysis, Unc! Side note -- this is the only song I ever sang with a "band" .. a couple friends and I were jamming around at UGA back in the day and I started playing the riff. They kicked in on drums and lead and looked to me to sing. The rest of the house dropped by and started rockin' out. It was fun, but I'm SO glad there was no such thing as cellphones in 1992 LOL

Ha, this is the only song I've ever sung with a "band" as well. We were hanging out at a tiny bar at Northgate in College Station, during my Texas A&M days, and I was friends with the band that was playing on the tiny stage. I don't remember how it happened, but a bunch of us got on stage with them, and they started playing Enter Sandman, and somehow I got a mic and sung the song. I'm sure it sound terrible and maybe a little bit drunk, but it was super fun. Good memories.

In the Black Album, I prefer The Struggle Within and Through the Never as pure riff madness :)

@@BenEllerThe Struggle Within is indeed really underrated although so heavy, it has Hetfield's famous downpicking, one of Kirk's best solos, an awesome harmonic intro and kick ass vocals! I have been playing this song for about 3 weeks now for a cover, and I still haven't gotten the solo perfect. Maybe you can help by putting a Struggle Within video? 😅

To me, it’s like the circus coming into town.getting louder and more intense as they come closer and closer, once the circus is set up and running its full on. When finished you hear the circus moving off into the distance
