That was very good advice. I was offered opportunities in other areas that would undoubtedly have paid very handsomely and yet would also have been boring at best. I loved cardiology and was recognized by my colleagues as having been very good at it. My pts. included several med. school professors, one med. sch. dean, other distinguished people, etc. I taught CV medicine almost every day and that was very personally rewarding (as well as being required by the Hippocratic Oath). My income was 3-4x the numbers you gave. That enabled me to treat large numbers of pts. with no cost to them (free or assignment) and could even often supply medications as well. I found that part of my practice very gratifying. Don't go into medicine/surgery for the money. Or if your personal integrity is easily challenged. Do it only because you absolutely love it, can devote all of your energy to it and can work every day to continually improve your skills.

If you go in the the webpage/ application page of a residency or fellowship program it will list this year's salaries of all years of their residents and fellows. Usually every year there is a 3-5% raise to cover inflation so is you are a first year fellow making 60K and the 2nd year resident makes 62K now, nest year when you are the 2nd year resident you will peobably make around 64-65K. The % raise and the actual numbers will vary from program to program of course. There is a lot more space for negotiations in an attending salary so they are not as clear cut.
