How much better is a top 1% vs top 5% rocket league player? We are answering that question in this video. I challenged Zspeed to some Rocket League skill challenges and we compared our scores and times to each other.
Workshop Map: Speed Jump: Trials 4
Training Pack #1 (High Aerials) 76CD-1B72-20D9-53DC
Training Pack #2 (Ceiling Shots) 94D7-0D24-CCDF-7A7A

I am a top 1% Rocket League player. Zspeed is a top 5% Rocket League players. We got together to try out various skill challenges to see how exactly we would perform compared to each other. Both of us are high level Rocket League players, but the difference in skill between us is very big. There wasn't a single challenge that Zspeed beat me in. I made this experiment to test out the difference between a top 5% Rocket League player and a top 1% Rocket League player.

I think Zspeed is not very representative of an average Champ 2 player, the man has 4000 hours, and is quite good mechanically, and this trial is all about mechanics. I'm a Champ 3, I'd say above average mechanically, and I most likely would not beat his time in any category. I think the average top 5%/Champ 2 player would have much better positional awareness than Zspeed but much worse mechanics, therefore I think they wouldn't fair as well as he did in this specific challenge

I was about to say, I am around champ 2 , but I'd say because of good basics and positioning. I would do a lot worse on these packs.

Watch the other car and react to that, not the ball. Learning defensive strategies for sports like basketball, hockey, soccer, etc helps but a lot of defense is reaction and timing, timing is huge in rocket league because you're playing soccer with a car and they aren't very agile.

The air game was one thing and you won all of them but you didn't test ground control before hand. It's easy to set up a play of the wall when you can spawn the ball in front of your car with bakkes mod but a totaly different thing when you need the perfect touch and time to set up in game. Dribbles, flicks, catches, power shots and most importantly drifting skills make a huge difference in game. As the 1v1 shows, you can put up a serious fight even if you don't have air superiority.

One thing this video doesn't address is the speed at which these mechanics are necessary the higher the rank you go. You often don't have the luxury of these unchallenged setups in a real game. So, while someone may be able to pull off these challenges/training packs etc and look nice doing so... if you put them in a lobby of higher level players that are making insanely fast reads (relative to what they see at their rank), they will just never touch the ball.

all this video did was give me hope lmao. i havent played in a while, mainly cuz my console died and im not allowed to get a new one. but i think im a month of solid practice away from being around zspeeds level. alot further from wayton but still. also i feel i could hold some ground against wayton in 1v1s since my best asset is positioning and defense. gonna follow zspeed now.

Play the game, there’s no shortcut or ‘one size fits all’ solution. If you put in the hours you’ll get there eventually. If you’re looking for mechanics to work on, then focus on fast aerials, recoveries, ball control, and overall speed.

i put like 2 weeks in freeplay, just grinding the mechs speed and accuracy (couldn’t flip reset/ air roll/ and shit) about four months ago. did it cause i had wifi problems so i couldn’t play. about a month later i come back into the game, i’m cruising : +200 mmr each season on solo q. trust me, do your 2 weeks like a monk.

i do that weird jump zspeed does. its what happens when you jump at a 45 angle at the exact top of the ramp. its similar to fetelix jump but no reset, so its just a single weird fish floppin lookin jump.

I'm top 1% and have couple friends who are around the top 5%. But I'm sure any of them are close to speeds mechanics/consistensy. Not to mention the large gap in 1v1 skill (I don't main 1s) The 1v1 often ends in them leaving the match midway due to losing so badly or then me winning by a lot. Not to mention that I do 1v2 against them and still come out on top most of the time. So Speedy is definately above average and not going to lie, but I thought the diffrence between 1% and 5% to be a lot larger.
