I have a oil furnace and they want $6 a gallon! I said nope getting a pellet stove. Propane is up too. So glad I have a pellet stove and a small electric heater in bedroom.

I put a 1000 gal propane tank at my house. Easy to switch to NG if it comes and is efficient. No regrets with propane

I don't know about elsewhere.. but I'm guessing that folks who switched from oil to propane in the northeast are starting to regret that decision. Propane would have to be close to one dollar per gallon cheaper than oil to break even on annual cost in the northeast as BTUs from propane is considerably lower than oil. The added efficiency is not enough to offset costs. I can't figure out why so many people are switching. I mean the only benefit is to the environment. But you need to burn more propane than oil to match BTUs. Regarding the comparison in this video... Its not comparing apples to apples. You should compare replacing old oversized oil boiler with a new properly sized boiler vs. a propane boiler so the savings you claim are inflated. I would like to help save the environment by replacing my old oil boiler with propane but the reality is it will cost $1200 more annually to burn propane based on the current prices in the northeast. Plus the added cost to convert to propane which will never be recovered unless propane becomes close to half of the price as oil. Which I betting will never happen. So I am replacing my old oil boiler with a new one. This switch to propane thing is a big scam in my opinion as I can't find anything online discussing reality. Oil is cheaper than Propane! People that state otherwise are either trying to make a buck or have their head in the sand. Natural gas is a different story.

Your absolutely correct. I work for a major propane company and many customers will switch not knowing the facts. Oil burns hotter per BTU than propane and makes sense to keep what you have.

Do you still stand by your perspective now that oil has skyrocketed? I’m not educated on the matter that well, but I’m wondering if propane has seen the inflation issues as much as oil? Will the savings be worth it now?

@@BucksFamilyDennison yes the saving come down to btu efficiency. 1 gal of propane is 91,500 and fuel oil is 138,500

We have to get rid of oil tanks from leased property in Pennsylvania at the mobile home state laws are getting tuff hear they say,I have to remove my oil tanks and switch over to propane at my costs

I'm trying to decide between oil and propane and I'm having a problem with the math. Looking at the 10 year history oil has been the same or lower price per gallon than propane. Right now it's $0.72 lower or 25% lower. I know propane burns cleaner but oil provides 138,500 BTU per gallon and propane 91,500 or 51% more BTU per gallon. The average propane furnace is 96% efficient and an oil furnace is, on the low end, 84% efficient or 12% less efficient. Here's where I have the problem... if oil provides 51% more BTU and costs 25% less how does it make sense to go with propane for a 12% efficient gain? What am I missing? Hope you can help as I have to decide before the new heating season starts.

@@dawns6340 some time ago... basically there is a number of factors but oil is better if it's a efficient furnace. However if you have access to natural gas that's your best option of all. Hope that helps.

It’s tough to find a real life comparison. See you have 100,000 BTU oil boiler, That Burns 100,000 BTUs per hour every hour no matter what the temperature is outside. Now let’s say you have 100,000 BTU propane boiler that is capable of ramping down to 10,000 BTUs. On milder days your boiler will only be burning 1/5 to 1/10 of what your oil burner is burning. Putting the heat where belongs in the house. As it gets colder the propane boiler ramps itself up to or near 100%.I guess it depends a lot on where you are located I am a heating contractor in Eastern Massachusetts sold I think it’s a 5050 around here. It is a tough call as they struggle to make this recommendation for customers

yes exactly btu is the king here there really is no comparison,but..... I have a ventless fireplace that supplements my 2 story colonial home , i set my downstairs zone at 55 for the boiler, run the propane at set 74 degrees , have the fireplace blower and a wedge fan in the kitchen that helps to distribute the heat to the 2nd floor we turn the propane unit off at 10 pm move the zone 2 that has been floating on 60 degrees setting to 70 degrees at 9pm. We use 1/2 the oil since i set this up years ago . my cost for propane is $200 per month 120 gallon tank. .

@@tomf9292 Heh Tom, an oil boiler can be set up with outside air temp reset just as the propane boiler your describing and as I'm sure you know an oil boiler would not burn the same amount with a warmer temp. I'm in the process of trying to decide whether or not to change to propane. Hard to find a comparison? Seems so.

We're looking at a new construction house with a propane system for heating. In our current house that's heated with oil, we have a maintenance contract with the oil company. They do an annual cleaning, change nozzle, change filter, etc... Also whenever something goes wrong we call them. With the propane system, do we need something similar? Annual cleaning, nozzle replacement, filter replacement, ability to call in case something goes wrong, etc?

There is no annual cleaning on appliances with propane, no nozzle replacement or filter like heating oil. The only thing is to buy the tank and not lease it from a provider, run the poly line, install regulators and leak check system. It’s very similar to natural gas but more efficient.

I have a hydronic heating system in my house. Hot water base board in a 1940’s cape cod. When we moved in they had an old Burnham boiler that used 1.75gph and we used a boat load of oil due to the unit being oversized. We replaced it with a Utica .75gph and got rid of 1-275 gal tank! We live in south PA would never consider propane!
