I know everybody breaks down things differently...the way I do it saves more of my disc by not having to make more cuts than needs to be. I cut the top off like you did, then I cut down until my disc sinks in which means that I am past the motor, then I Make one lst cut horizontally from there about 1/4 around the body. This allows me to pry the body apart enough to pull just the motor out. The plug on the inside just pops off with a flat head.

Thanks for the video. My way of doing is: Cut top off as you did, take out bolts and remove the screw or the thing that looks like coils. There are a set of them. Both will lift out fairly easily. Then cut near the bottom just below the indention. That will remove the bottom. The 3rd cut is to the side of the seam that runs from the top to the bottom, as you did. Take a hammer and pop the top bracket out. From what I understand is the bracket, screws/coil looking things and the housing of the copper is number one steel, the rest is cast. I don't have an air compressor readily available. I cut the copper off the top and bottom of the housing like you did. Then use a blunted screw driver to put the copper strands out. I like your way though.

To make your disk last longer, don't press down on them. Let the weight of the grinder do the work, plus it cuts faster too. P.S. never cut aluminum with a carbon cutting disk it will explode on you.

Not completely true. Rub the cutting edge good with cutting wax and they cut like crazy. The wax will prevent the aluminum from plugging up the grit which is why they explode. Now I don't recommend ever grinding nonferrous on a bench grinding stone.
@ExStaticBass
@ExStaticBass 3 жыл бұрын
While using a cut-off disk in your angle grinder like that it wears the disk down less if you cut away from the sparks. There's less of a chisel edge against the edge of the disk that way and not as much breaks off hence it doesn't wear out as quick. Every little bit helps right?

Most of the ones made today are aluminum due to the cost of copper. I've found that most heat/air places will give you the sealed units as they are a hassle for what the return is. Most all that stuff goes to China anyway. Also, one trip to the ER for stitches will take what little bit of profit you'll make. Just be careful. Some places may work on 50/50 split, you clean them and haul them, some money to be made there...

What makes aluminum windings undesirable or not worth it when it comes to scrapping
@Okiescrapper
@Okiescrapper 10 ай бұрын
well, aluminum is light compared to copper, and aluminum pays about 40 cents a pound, where copper pays $3.00 a pound. so is scrapping motors for the wire, it would take 7 motors with aluminum wire to equal. 1 motor with copper wire. and that would be if the aluminum weighed out the same as copper. but with aluminum that light it may take 14 motors is the aluminum is half the density of copper now Roger with CUscrapping says his yard pays better for aluminum wire then sheet aluminum. so check with your yard on prices, hope this all makes since

I will have to check on that, I think it may have a brass bushing in the top of the unit too. It may be a few days before I check it's 7 degrees with a -13 wind chill and the pieces are under snow at this time, Thanks for watching Peter

I just reclaimed a collection of 12v batteries setting around the farm. Don’t know the weight but I can’t pick it up.

12v batteries are nice it doesn't take a lot to make some good money. not sure what the yards are paying but the price seems to stay around 23 cents a lb. give or take, if I remember right a riding mower battery was worth $2.75

This was great but you didn't give us cost for the copper and for the scrap separate vs cost if you would just scrap the whole thing. So we can see if its cost effective to give up labor time.

I got a weight of all the steel just add the weight of the copper and you will have total weight. you will have to check your yard for prices they are different all over the country and all over town,

even if you had to buy the unit at .10 a lb. it would cost you $5.00 and you will make some of that back as short iron or #1 prepared, so you may have 2, 2 1/2 into it after cutting disk, and if you are not making a video you may go faster, and do them on rainy days or at the end of the day when you have the time. It makes zero sense to me to hang a heater near the ceiling or to not set it as low down as possible to actually heat the air as the heat rises... Kinda like installing a wall ac down low cooling only the air between it and your feet...

that's why I keep the main one that I use portable, the one in the other room is mounted high out of the way but aimed down to blow the air down and in my direction to keep the air around me warm and not to heat the whole shop. it will warm the shop up some
