I moved into my new condo here in Hua Hin a month ago. This video is about how much it cost me to live for that month. Everything from rent, electricity and water, groceries, eating out and entertainment, petrol and mobile phone charges. Over a year I spend more than this but this is just to give you an idea of my average weekly spend.

I have just published my book “A Three-Week Road Trip Through Southern Thailand” which is my first book in the “Just Another Day in Paradise" series. Unlike my “Retirees” books, this series is not just for retirees or people who may be considering living here. This book is a little different as it is aimed at anyone who would like to take an exhilarating road trip through Thailand and is the first book of three which covers Southern Thailand the next two books will cover Northwestern Thailand and Eastern Thailand, I retired to Thailand in 2017 after working as a chef in hotels around the world, cruise ships, oil rigs, Antarctic supply vessels and gold mines. When I arrived in Thailand, I envisaged that I would spend the rest of my days sitting in a hammock on palm-fringed beaches, eying the beautiful Thai ladies and sipping cocktails but after a few months of doing this boredom kicked in and I knew that I needed something else to occupy my time or I would become an alcoholic so I reinvented myself as an author and I have written eleven books to date.

Thanks for this one Ged. My wife and I are hoping to start our retirement in about 5 years using Thailand as our first stop/base. Well probably have a combined income of about £2,000 a month to spend, and as ex backpackers we're more than happy with a street food/basic accommodation/local beer lifestyle. You putting this sort of video together showing the real cost of living if you don't go crazy is really useful. The TV shows about retiring abroad which they show here in the UK are great, but they are always about staying in high end apartments and eating out in posh restaurants - not the reality for most people, and certainly not us on our budget. Keep traveling and keep putting out more content. 🙂👍🙂

Hi Mark 2000 (90000) a month is very doable and will give you a good lifestyle here though back in the UK it would not be so easy or fulfilling to live on that. Good luck with your eventual move I am sure it will be the right decision. If I can make a suggestion in the next five years before you come to live here try to learn some everyday Thai it will make a big difference. Cheers Ged

Hi Mark. I usually stay in the Hua Hin Terminal on Soi 88. It's a five minute drive from town. If you look back at some of my past videos you will see some of them with the hotel. It has a swimming pool, gym and big room. I normally pay around 400 to 500 baht a night but the price often goes up at weekends and holidays when people come from Bangkok. November is the high season and Thailand is starting to pick up again after covid so prices may be higher now Safe travels Cheers Ged

@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 7 ай бұрын
Hi Denny. It would depend on how you want to live your life in retirement as everyone is different with different needs and expectations. US$350 a week is liveable for the day to day living expenses and is about what I budget to live on. I like to travel a lot so that is extra on top of my monthly expenses. If you like to go out to bars and restaurants regularly then that would have to be factored in . If you intend to take out medical insurance that would need to be added also. I drive a motorbike so that's very cheap to run but if you were intending to buy a car then that would be an added expense. But US$350 a week would be liveable for day to day living. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged

Hi Mark. Living here is not the same as living in the west and you don't see the cost of living increases like you do in most of those countries. What you have to remember is that the wages and income is low for most Thais and there's no social security system here to help them in hard times. If you go to the tourist hot spots you will pay more but if you just live a normal life and splurge every now and again you can live a great life on your western pension. Having said that I believe that the UK pension is frozen when a UK citizen leaves the country so if you are from there it could be different. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged
@markdavies1473
@markdavies1473 11 ай бұрын
@@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 thank you Ged, the prices will roughly be the same in 5 years. Yeah the UK pension does freeze but only when you first claim for it. You can let's say retire and move at 63years age, but the UK pension doesn't freeze at 63 years old it will freeze only at 66 year's old,which I believe its the retirement age in the UK.
