Warning: I am a trained professional with decades of experience, do not attempt anything seen in this video! In todays episode Id like to show you some of the forces your body can generate in a fall and what those forces would feel like.
Typically you can see up to 2.5KN on a lead fall however there are some type of falls where you can generate more (like falling at/above an anchor). I hope you walk away from this video with an understanding of why we like stretchy materials in our climbing systems.
In conclusion on forces id like to say if your getting to 5kn and above, you are going to get hurt. You never want to fall from above your anchor...These falls where all factor 1 falls..so I fell from my anchor. If you like this episode we will explore some more forces or what factor falls even are, let me know what you would like to see below... I sure as hell won't be trying anything higher though...

I love that we have companies who tell us how to / how not to use their products, but that’s not enough, so we have standard bodies to check those, but that’s not enough, so then we have a dudes on KZfaq to explain it to us in detail , but that’s not enough, so we have more dudes on KZfaq to break stuff and show us what’s ‘good enough’, but that’s not enough, so we have more dudes on KZfaq who are willing to slack snap their own balls for us. I suspect it will not be enough…

Expect a call from Yann Camus. I bet he's looking for youthful durable test-subjects for his gear failure tests (during soloing) 🤣. You gave my wife and I a good chuckle. Have fun with your new toy!

So, as a fellow arborist, what I wanna know is what is the impact force when you slam back into a tree from various angles. I feel like rock climbers must encounter some similar circumstances, but I ha e been taught that anything above a 30⁰ angle is going to generate enough force that survival is not guaranteed, but I feel like some of the hits people take in the climbing fails videos are far worse than that, and the ones wearing helmets seem to be able to walk it off. I don't know how you could measure that impact force, but that's the number set that I am after.

Super cool stuff. DMM did some tower test a few years ago and list the results on their website. They used the 80kg weight and of course not attached to a harness. It's interesting to see how much the harness and body is distributing the impact. There is a limit to how much your body and harness can slow an impact (which is what limits the forces) so be careful. If you see forces much above 5kn, tipping the scale to 10kn isn't going to take much as much of the stretch of the nylon in the harness will be gone. 5kn is ouch, 10kn is ribs and whiplash.

I think you might be maxing out the force you can get on a fall because theres going to be some flex in that wooden beam you're anchored on.

If you really wanna get hurt, Hold your body as rigid as possible while you fall on the dyneema sling. You’ll get a higher number on the scale but you’ll also give yourself a nice case of whiplash.
