Everyone who keeps Dorper sheep loves them, but they come at a price! Real Dorper sheep (purebreds and full bloods) cost quite a bit. Good Dorper sheep can cost more than $1,000 for a solid ewe, and I've seen them go higher than that at shows. A Dorper stud ram can go to $2,500 and higher.
When looking at getting into Dorper sheep, you must factor in their cost, they are typically more expensive than another meat/hair sheep. If you are expecting to get a ewe for $200, you you won't be getting a good Dorper ewe that will produce.

ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
Hi! I'm PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It's something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!
We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
In 2019 we dipped out feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
We raise Dorper sheep and have big plans for:
• grass-fed lamb
• fullblood Dorper breeding stock
• meat chickens
• laying chickens and ducks
• heritage breed pork
• honey
• row crops
• perennial food forest
• and more

Here in Australia I got my Dorpers at an absolute bargain. Paid $100 ($75usd) each. All had lambs soon after arrival. These were commercial I suppose. Most of mine look the same as yours.

Yes! Thanks so much for staying tuned for lambs. We actually had a friend watch them this year during lambing and there were no problems. 8 lambs without any pulling 🎉 There will be more cuteness to come on the channel!

I hope you had a good move. Wondering if have seen a price difference in Nc from your last place. Around us (PA), we can get papered Rams starting at $500 on up and commercial ewe's no more than $200, usually around $150. It is amazing to see the price difference from area to area.

A little bit. It's hard to say since I've only been at this for a few years. My first trio in UT (full bloods) were $2k and out here I'm paying $2,400 for three full blood ewes. Don't know if that's regional, or just the state of inflation in general...

in SA we say dorpers have goats blood in their veins, they love to crawl through fences and visit the neighbours. i sold my flock of 65 dorpers and slaughtered about 12, i just couldnt keep up with them anymore so in their place i got ill de fraans sheep, going to try them out, but if dont like them im going back to dorper. keeping 5 pet dorper ewes though and a hammel, castrated ram thats a pet. SA prices are about the same as what was said here as well, my first commercial ram was R1800, thats $122,73 cheap ram, but he produced gorgeous ewe lambs.

I haven't done it yet, but I plan on doing it next year. From what I'm told, you've gotta watch those lines closely. Excellent genetics will make an excellent line, but poor genetics get worse with daughter to sir breeding.

Don’t do it. They will produce smaller lambs that never mature to good size.

Inbreeding/linebreeding can be a very useful tool.... the thing is, youre going to want to know & have an eye for what traits in your stock that you truly desire & what traits you also dont want to replicate. When inbreeding you magnify on the good, but also the bad tend to pop up (recessive genes). When breeding anything, the goal is to identify, isolate, harness & reproduce specific traits to consistancy. If your constantly outcrossing your never going to harness or isolate anything specific, every generation will become a crap shoot & nothing special will be preserved... So what im saying is, with a good eye & proper culling standards.... linebreeding is definately the way to go.... but if you dont have the stomach for doing whats necessary.....then go on scatterbreeding your stock. Thats what seperates "breeders" from the rest.....

Welcome to the channel! I think if you found someone who knew what they were looking for they would pay more for Dorper meat. But you'd have to look a but for it. Grass fed lamb is already hard enough to sell at a fair price. We've been in Utah this whole time, but we're making a move to North Carolina. But I haven't announced it to the whole channel yet 😜

So basically what your telling me is if I buy 100 dorper pure blood lambs at 150 a pop for 15k. And when they become mature sheep they are worth 500+ so my equity in my flock would be 50k in 1 year without accounting for the new lambs

Mine were sometimes ready as early as 10 months. But 12-14 months is a pretty safe assumption. I have Katahdins right now, and they are slower growers than Dorpers.

@@johnford313 hmm, there are lots to choose from. I recommend seeing what those near. you are doing. Hard to say given that I don't live near you. Dorpers have been the fastest I've raised. But I have limited experience with other breeds.

I really don't know much about that. Is there any reason why you wouldn't get one closer? There's thousands of registered fullbloods (meaning you can can trace both dam and sire back to S Africa lines) you can find.

I do not. Also I wouldn't choose Dorper for the Caribbean. I would look at black belly or st croix.

Because people will pay that much for them I guess. I suppose their value comes from the ability to create a meatier sheep, faster, with less inputs.

Do people swap rams for breeding purposes? I'd rather find another ram than breed it with a daughter. I know it's just nature and that happens in nature. But still feels wrong.

If you know enough people that raise sheep, you can get someone to swap rams with you. I've never swapped, rather I've had mentors with really good sheep that let me "buy in" to their flocks.

Depends on a lot of factors. Cheap commercial sheep, $100. Papered animal with champion genetics, $1,000. But if I had to say what is fair, I'd say $200-$300 in most places.

If you're buying sheep of of Craigslist for that price, they probably aren't papered. Which works for many people, in fact I'm all for it if your goal is just meat. Papered animals is a different game.
