An ‪@EricHaugenGuitar‬ video on Rhythm Guitar had me thinking - how much does someone really need to know before they get out and start playing with other folks (if that's something they want to do)? I posit that it's less than you might imagine...

Get my PADs bundle here: www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... (this folder will grow, and I'd encourage you to ask for different keys/songs and stuff that might suit this type of preset?)
I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!

I enjoyed this post very much. While I’m working on my ability to solo and improvise, when family or friends ask me to play something - they are really expecting a song. A song is where people connect. It’s what people expect of someone who plays guitar - why play guitar if cannot play songs (is their line of thinking).

You don't need to know a thing just have good musical sense and writing. I'm sure a good number of KZfaqrs can play circles around several world famous guitarists and certainly know more theory.

Taste is everything though, most world famous guitarists have that level of notoriety because of their unique sound and phrasing and experience playing with other world famous musicians throughout their career

@@michaelhubbell1260studio musicians vs songwriters is kind of how I view it. Studio musicians and people versed in theory can play just about anything but, that unique and often times indescribable “voice” is what people become famous for. I don’t think Cobain was an amazing singer or guitarist but, he captivated a generation with his music.

@@JosePineda-jn8jklike I said, taste is everything. Both in the studio and with songwriting. There’s a reason why there are so many music theory grads who cannot get a song to chart (or get session work) and publish on yt instead. A proper education in music theory can be a powerful tool but at the end of the day your ear is the most important thing

Really appreciated your take on this. It's good to break things down simply, so we can all focus on just playing songs. From there we can go where we want with guitar, but at least it's keep the focus on making music and that most of us can do it.

As a beginner, if you can’t play like Alan Holdsworth or Matteo Mancuso within the first five minutes of learning the guitar …give it away.

This is the Nashville Number System, and is greatly simplifies memorizing song chords and progressions. It also makes transposing songs to different keys easy.

What Ive noticed is finding the right combination of people with skills and getting them together can be the luckiest thing. Or not getting with the right people can leave you behind. When I didn't have good enough equipment I found a great situation. Now I got good enough equipment but cant find any situation that gets me playing.

There really is know dancing around knowing some music theory and chordal relationships. That's the basics even if you just play by ear.

I've always had the mindset that on guitar like anything in life everything is hard until you actually do it a lot, only way to be able to do something is to keep at it relentlessly. Those here who are parents I think understand that very well when you get a baby everything about it is difficult but you are forced to keep at it and keep going and going and before you know it it becomes just a part of your life.

Teach people some songs in a few keys and give them a pentatonic scale. You can do enough with that if you just wanna play along to just about anything once they grasp how the scale interacts with the progression.

The sound YOU get John at 7:08-7:14 is either FRET BUZZ, or what we used to call the STRATocaster BARK. That guitar needs to be checked humidity or lack of,might need a slight truss rod adjust. OR is it the unmistakable BARK characteristic of the STRAT.

This was a good explanation. Beyond learning the major & minor chords within any key, learning the code of the major scale with all of the whole and half steps within it are crucial and then understanding that all of the modes live within that same code is an eye opener. Get that down and you've won the majority of the battle. The rest is just trying to look cool and make panties drop doing it.
