I would have loved a breakdown of how much money it would actually cost going to camp in my first year, so I've made a note of how much I spent this year (as a returner with JCUSA) and I've laid it all out for you guys.

Do I actually have to go through an agency? I saw that you can just pick different camps and apply directly through their websites. Also I don’t really know why I would spend 500€ on a program when I can get a visa and insurance by myself or am I wrong here?

You have to have someone to sponsor your visa and most camps will not do that even if you’re hired directly with them. Therefore you’d have to go through an agency anyways because you can’t get the visa required to work without a sponsor! It’s annoying but sometimes if you’re directly placed with a camp the agency fee is lower I believe.

How much USD did you end up spending during your travel after camp? I’m going to French Woods Festival in New York this summer as a first time general counsellor and I’m so worried I’m going to come back after camp with no savings hahaha!

French Woods nice! I worked there for a bit one year, and also have done life guard training there a couple of times. You will have alot of fun! And French woods has such good food also! If I were to answer your question that you asked Millie, i would say have a budget, and base your stay after camp on that. It also depends on age, I know one year I spent my whole wages down the local bar. My advice is just don't drink when ever you want to budget. You are going to meet other people who are in that same budget also which helps share costs when travelling. You can do it cheap. New York is the most expensive place for accomodation and other expenses, but you can mega bus around, and hostels outside of new york are cheap. Also you might make American friends who were kids at these rich camps, and they often invite you to stay with them and their families are usually all very welcoming and generous. Even if you run out of money, 5/9 of my summers I went out there just to go to camp and then came staight home. Camp is the experience in itself, the travel is just a bonus!

You’ve got a pretty detailed reply below which looks very very helpful. I spent SO much money because I solo travelled and went exactly where I wanted to thinking I was only gonna be in the USA once so probs overspent, but defo look at using the money you get from camp and also making friends with people who would potentially let you stay accommodation wise even just for a night or two!!
