Nice video!!❤️❤️❤️ I think an important piece of advice is that it's better to collect gear gradually. When the process is slower you have a better picture of what you need and like and you are less likely to purchase something you don't actually need. I also recommend highly finding stuff second-hand!!!

Yes yes yes! Totally agree with this though sometimes if you're just starting out and have a big tour planned you may have to gear up all at once. But if possible, I definitely agree acquiring gear gradually can be a better way to do it!

Excellent breakdown. I went way over this for my gear where my wife's was about spot on. We travel with a dog as well which adds a bit to it but it is fun and grabs a lot of attention and we have his trailer for a little extra space if we need it for a short while. Our first tour we went on the cheap and found some things like the saddles, panniers, and sleeping pads just aren't really worth skimping on. Our dog has a bob trailer he rides on and with him and his needs we never get out of 4 panniers. Carrying water can be a challenge as well so a filter of some short is incredibly helpful in some areas of the country

Peter Weikel Hey Peter! Thank you for this comment! Now that we have two dogs we’re trying to figure out how to make it work with them! They are young and crazy right now but hoping to get them used to a trailer soon. Have seen quite a few using the bob trailers so will definitely consider that (uh-oh i see that total budget number creeping up 😆 🐶). Water is definitely a main concern for traveling w them in backcountry.

@@radbikeadventure Thanks for another good info vid. It would be good if you did a budget list. USD3500-4000 would put a lot of people off. Many don't even know if they will enjoy touring, so would not splash out large amounts of cash on an experiment, they would just feel it was beyond their budget. If I had told my wife I needed to spend that money, she would not have been so accommodating. In fact I have no top end gear, and only a couple of mid range items. There are lots of reviews on the KZfaq hiking channels for really budget gear, like cook sets for under $30 and cookers for the same. There are also much cheaper panniers, mine were very cheap, not waterproof (use bin liners and cheap stuff sacks). They may not last as long as Ortliebs, and maybe I would not trust the cheap panniers for multi month tours, but most people will start with weekends or the odd week away, and these cheap bags are up to that. These cheapo panniers start at around $40. You had a friend in Australia who had a budget ten. They are not ultralight, but actually at around 2.6kg (2 person) they are not so much heavier than most ultralights 2 person that come in 1.8-2kg. Some good ones around $100, as well as MSR/Big Agnes clones for not much more. There are plenty of inflatable sleep pads for under $40, OK they are not insulated, that are good enough for 2-3 season camping. And the list goes on. Ultimately you sacrifice dollars in exchange for lbs, but the most effective way for me to shave off all up weight would be to lay of the cakes and beers for a month, and that would save me a few dollars as well :-)
@RogerWarszawa
@RogerWarszawa 3 жыл бұрын
One other thing to consider; the N+1 equation for bikes is also true for touring/camping equipment! There’s always so much more you can buy, or update, because there’s always something newer, lighter, more packable, or just simply coooooler and you just have to have it. For example, I had no idea that I needed a GSI pan scrapper until a couple of videos back, yet now I’m hunting all over Warsaw for one. It. Never. Ends.

Nice video and informative. One thing I would add although it is not an absolute necessity for some. A cycle computer for navigation. Either that or use a smartphone. Or be able to read a map correctly. Also another thing. Get gear that is suited for the climate you are cycling in. I live in Iceland and I do my tours locally. I have lost count of how many backpackers and cycle tourers I have seen crawling out of their MSR or Big Agnes tents shivering because they are not warm enough, even during summers. I have also seen many of these UL tents get their poles snapped, their flies ripped because of heavy winds. All the while I am comfortable in my Hilleberg Soulo which stands like the Rock of Gibraltar through the windgusts. I realize that this is kind of specific but every tent or sleeping bag or item is not always suited for every type of climate. Also consider durability. If you are falling in love with the idea of cycle touring or backpacking consider the longevity of the product you are buying. Do you expect it to last 1 year, 5 years or even 10 years? I am willing to buy quality if it lasts because then I do not have to replace that item again for a long time. No sense in buying a tent for 250-300 dollars 4 times over when you can buy once for 600-700 dollars. I would also add that bikes rarely come ready to ride for most people. There are always some kind of adjustments needed to be made, another stem, a seat (like you covered), handlebar tape and the list can go on. We should always budget for that when buying a bike. Even if its a brand new one.

Talking to my daughter a couple of weeks ago, a doctor in UK while I'm a pensioner in Austria, we both thought it was funny that some folks collect stamps, but we are stove collectors! MSR petrol (USA gas), MSR gas, (USA Canister) trying to help here (maybe you need a translation book for UK English to USA English) Alpkit gas, Alpkit Spirit and, naturally, Trangia spirit in addition to two backpacking wood burners (well twigs really). And that is just mine! Also I often end up in a restaurant!! Tents: one man (2), two man (1) but I just gave another 2 man one to my son. Plus a tarp and a bivvy bag. Always good to have a bunch of options! Three sleeping bags. One alleged 3 season (it is not), one winter (to minus 10 degrees C) and a summer one. So your costing is probably about right. Love your videos, thanks for sharing, both of you make me smile!

Ryan, you're costs are pretty much spot on, for Aussie viewers you can add about an extra 30% on these prices as Ryan is quoting US prices. My Bike cost me AU $2,750, I already had a set of rear ortleibs but they are around $200 for ear and about $180 for fronts and my Ortleib handlebar bag cost $106 if I remember correctly. My tent is about 15 years old but not used much in all this time and still in good condition but i need a smaller sleeping mat. and maybe a cheap tarp ground sheet. It seldom gets cold enough for a 4 season tent so a 2 or 3 season is quite sufficient as we don't have super high altitudes downunder so around 3,000ft Max. Overall though your costings is not a huge difference to here Ryan but new stuff especially from the US like the MSR, REI and Big Agnus Tents are about $200 extra here in Australia. Great video...a big thumbs up, loving your channel girls.

Good list but I'd call it an intermediate setup rather than one for noobs. The prices for the bikes I'm fine with but the sleeping system for a total of 830 bucks is way too much imo for someone just trying/ starting bikepacking. Depending on the climate and the duration of your first tour the difference between a hubba and a cheap decathlon 50 $ tent is not that big, same goes for a sleeping bag and pad. Obviously if your first tour is the great divide this does not apply but if you're going out locally for a couple of days in mild climate a 20 $ synthetic bag is fine. I used one for the first single overnighters and 3-4 days trips. I even had one of those cheap foam pads that you roll up. It also took me a couple trips to figure out what's important to me, what's comfortable and what works or not. Some makeshift solutions i still run to this day, for example I keep my whole sleeping system in a Ortlieb 35 l drybag that i strap to my handlebar via 4 straps. The whole thing cost me 40 bucks and is bombproof. I also still use a BRS stove for 15 $ Other stuff i upgraded gradually, like the bag and pad when i first went on a trip during early spring when it still froze overnight, or a decent pillow.

@@radbikeadventure Nice! I love it...honestly it's a focal point in my adventures. To find specific places to hang out for the night gives me an extra element to adventures that I look foreward to. The comfy camp after a long day...I find that very rewarding. Only downside is like you mentioned trees are not always available so I make an extra effort to plan ahead my distance relative to where I'll spend the night and simply make my destination a place to hang out...literally. 😉 There's a learning curve to hammocks and on YT theres a gentleman I reccomend: 'Shugemery' who along with his unique character is very informative to look into anything hammock related. I have the Deep Jungle XL. I totally reccomend an underquilt. I searched for over a year before I settled on mine and I'm glad I did because it fits like a glove and great insulation once its dialed in. www.arrowhead-equipment.com/store/p308/PotomacUnderQuilt.html I also have a table for my cooking from the hammock and making fresh ground Aeropress coffee in the morning. Should definately give that a look too: www.schwarzebiene.de/startseite/ I look at camping as a minimalist way to enjoy nature in relative comfort and luxury. Treat yoself! 🙃

OUTRRRAAAGIOUS!!! You got it totally wrong... It’s all about impressing random strangers on the trail. I got a Campy “C-Record” equipped, full carbon fiber super bike with carbon fiber disk aero wheels that I paid through the nose for. It was custom ordered to spec! I then had a local artisan welder hand make my rack system, to fit my 12 Ortleib bags I use on every trip. Since I am a “weight wiener” I can’t justify slowing down my Strava personal record worthy rides with cooking gear. So I hire a service to meet me 100 miles down the road each day with a chef cooked meal. If it isn’t carbon fiber, it is Titanium. I saw some motorcycle racer on T.V. wearing a Shoei race helmet with Eyeballs painted on the sides and I just had to have that. My sleeping bag, pillows, jacket, hat, gloves, mattress and neck warmer are all down filled and Gor-Tex shelled. I just hate unreliable tools, so I make sure and have a bag of Snap-On wrenches on all my trips. Much like you, I edit my amazing vids on the road. I had a custom Alienware PC with a waterproof case made to fit my rack system. My 12,000 Lume custom Nite Rider lighting system is powered by dynamos in my front and rear hubs, and a custom dynamo on my bottom bracket! I bought Lance Armstrong’s signed jersey at an auction (before he was disgraced) and I wear it on every ride. Yes my friends, it is all about the big show. So steal your Mom’s jewelry and sell your Dad’s ‘69 Camero, then buy all new gear and give me a call... We will go biking right down the middle of the road, so everybody can see our awesome new setups!!!
