I was TERRIFIED of 3D printing armor for so long because of what I ‘thought’ it would cost. Like 3D printing itself, printing out your own set of armor isn’t nearly as expensive as you might think! In this week’s video I’ll be walking you through how I estimate the base filament costs of my Bo-Katan armor (including a helmet!) and show you just how easy it is to do for your own set of armor.
And YOU GUYS , it’s a miracle this video was uploaded in time we had no power for TWO DAYS. This was def one of the crazier editing sessions I’ve had (editing in cars, off powerbanks, etc.) but I’m very happy with this video!

I was wondering what size nozzle you are using, most machines come with a 0.4mm installed, but that some people use larger or smaller diameter, what size are you using?

hey everyone! just wanted to point out that this video is more-so meant for hobbyists and beginners, not necessarily a detailed cost-breakdown of someone that would be printing commissions or for profit. I don't include the cost of a printer because this video is assuming you already have one or are considering purchasing one, plus, that cost varies wildly depending on what you want to get. Thanks to the majority of you who understand that :) You're smart, you know to add that cost if you don't have one. Also, factoring things like electricity, print time and other costs IS important if you want to enter that realm, but the fact is that the majority of 3D printing users don't care about that (or are overwhelmed by it). When you understand just how much filament a build can take, you're able to make educated decisions about if you want to try making a costume out of a certain material or just 3D print it, which is exactly why I decided to make this video about Bo-Katan's armor as I initially was going to build it from EVA foam. Once I realized I could print things for much cheaper than my EVA foam costs, I went for it. Remember, everyone 3D prints for different reasons. Some are 3D printing hobbyists who want to tinker and learn all they can about what the medium can do, and others (which I identify with) see 3D printing as a tool for a larger hobby, such as cosplay. I enjoy learning things about 3D printing so I can share them in a relatable fashion, but we all have different reasons for dealing with these finicky robots.

I have printed a few helmets but I mostly print models for people and it is definitely profitable because for two rolls of filament that I can purchase on sale for around $30 I can print out a model that takes me two weeks to print and I sell the model for $550 so that's well over a $500 profit margin. I purchased all four of my printers two FDM printers and two resin printers within one year and within months all the print jobs that I did paid for the machines. Currently printing two Boba Fett helmets for two children for a customer, Your rescaling video came in handy for this job.

I wish I had the space/room to setup a 3D printer, but I've already bought most of my Mandalorian armor parts thru Etsy or Facebook. Unfortunately in some instances the pieces arrived way too small/child sized (shoulder pauldrons & my 1st PLA helmet) or way too large (from a FB user who claimed to be my size/weight but parts ended up being designed to fit an Ogre/The HULK!) Thus I've ended up with 3 attempts at proper armor :-( Even when I've found sales/good deals on 3D prints the total cost has been astronomical compared to if I had printed them myself.

Oof, I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience ordering armor off etsy. It is certainly a lot cheaper to print yourself but there's a lot of other things to consider too ... like maintenance, failures etc. but I find if you're willing to put a little of work into the printers it's worth it in the end.

Really great to see what settings others use. I personally print at 10% infill, 75mm/s and with supports over an 85° angle. I am keen to test out your 100+ print speed, anything to cut that time down!

Nice! I will say that I've actually dialed my print speed down a lot since making this video ... I did have success getting all of my Bo Katan prints out at 100 mm/s but as my printers have gotten older and needed upgrading I've cut things down to 70-80mm/s

Little thing to add to the cost list as well.. The amount of time you use the printer on the energy/electricity bill. Because not everyone has Solar Panels and surprise! electricity cost money.. So for those who make armors themselves or for others (friends) that pay you for the material make sure you also include those costs as well :D

8/10!!! I gotta do better next time. 3D printing can be profitable, I was able to upgrade my machines with a bit leftover with what I did on etsy (I just chose to close down due to no time with youtube). It's important to remember other things like printer maintenance, time on the bed, electricity used per machine etc. when you get into that world but tbh, I never really looked that closely into it because I knew I wasn't going to be doing it long term. Just something to consider! good luck to ya

@@vaultfox he truely has. I’m eagerly waiting on the BK jet pack. But also in the process of printing a full damaged version of the HIM armour for a friend. The detail in the damaged parts is just incredible! I’m printing it all at .12 or .16 to ensure the detail is persevered as much as possible.

Great video you do awesome work with those cranky cr-10,s . I had one and i got 4 busts off of it and after that it was a total nightmare . I couldnt get it to print anything else . I changed from cura to simplified 3d it worked with one print then nothing else. I changed the hot end , the boden tube , and the bed rollers nothing worked it quit printing all together . I sold it to friend who has a ender 3 and he still hasn,t got the cr-10 working. I bought the peopoly phenom and i love that machine its so easy to work with. Some day i will return to fdm printing when i have more time in my life to fool with it right now ill stick to resin. I really admire you and emily the engineer and anybody else that can get those cr-10s to run right bravo . I dont print armor i print large scale statues. Keep up the great work . Happy creating.........

Thank you for all the great tutorials… I just started 3-D printing a few weeks ago and I’ve already finished two sets of armor. I’m getting ready to prep and paint them. I printed the armor in PLA, I have a question about wearing the armor outside in the sunlight, should I be concerned about the armor warping or melting if worn during the daytime? Thank you

Dude that is AMAZING!!!! And as far as PLA armor melting while wearing ... I'm sure that it IS possible for that to happen, but I am from a colder climate (Pennsylvania) and don't go to enough conventions that are warmer to give you a good answer on that. But I did wear my Sylvie to DragonCon (headpiece and sword were PLA) and they fared well

There are few other items that you should consider into the cost of 3D printing. You should also calculate the cost of the electrical power you are using for the printer. You can easily calculate how many kilowatt hours your printer uses each hour and then multiply that by how much you are paying per kilowatt hour from your power company. Another item that people forget to calculate is the cost of depreciation and maintenance on the printer. I make a lot of prints that require additional hardware to assemble like screws and bolts. You should also had them into the cost of the item. I've done this using a spreadsheet. I think a I saw somewhere that the selling price should be 2 1/2 times the production cost. '

This video is more-so meant to be a beginners guide for hobbyist's and cosplayers who want to make their own armor for themselves. While those are things to consider that’s also a lot more overwhelm for someone who just wants to know base material costs

Very informative video (and amazed you edited this with no power), thankyou! Really need to get myself a CR-10 (currently have an ender 3 V2) as I sooooo want to print this armour. Going to check out the files you recommend as I have been looking around for Bo-Katan files but it's hard to know what's best. Haven't tried that filament either, will have to see if I can get it in Australia.

I wonder if you could probably print most of this on an Ender3 (maybe just not the chestpiece but can easily splice and glue it together if need be)

Also, trying to estimate if I should take the dive into 3d printing. What would be the best $300-$400 printer, and what software is needed to actually print it. I'm assuming I'll need additional tools to shave, cut, sand, etc. Hoping you may have a "I'm new to 3D printing guide. Thanks!

and as for something in the 300-400 range, I can only really recommend what I've used (dont really consider myself a 3D printing reviewer) I use a Creality CR10s but have heard great things about the Ender 3 (same company) if you are looking to start smaller. Easier to level bed and better for beginners, but I knew I wanted something that could print full helmets and armor and went with the CR10s. They're reliable machines that just require a bit more maintenance than the pricier brands

You’re welcome! That was the same mindset I had after buying a helmet or two. As long as you’re willing to deal with the tinkering, troubleshooting and issues with a 3D printer I think it’s worth it In the long run

I got my printer back in November and I was pretty much wondering if I was actually gonna use it. I already had a Mandalorian helmet STL I wanted to print, and a blaster, but I was like...what if that's it? I got my printer for like...$270, and the ability to make armor **for my tiny head and body** was SO worth the cost.

I thought about using EVA foam to make armor, but I don't like the flimsyness and "dust" so I'm planning to use my 3D printer. Now with that being how do you put on and take off the armor??

I use industrial velcro to attach my armor. I sew it onto the flight suit and use E6000 glue to glue it onto the armor pieces

I'm 3d printing the master chief. I used a little over 1kg of material for the extra large helmet I got large filament on sale for 5bucks a kg. So it can be dirt cheap. Just tale days to print.

Checkout Stefan from CNC kitchen. He breaks down the price into fine and accurate details. And shares an excel sheet to calculate the costs (including electricity, printer wear, pre and postprocess time etc..)

I know you like Cura, I do too. I love the the scripts, tree supports, fuzzy skin mode etc., etc. BUT! Prusaslicer handles/hides seams and zits WAY better than Cura. It's a deal breaker for me so I mostly use PS because of that. I hope Cura can get that good someday.

It’s not really that I “like” cura, it’s more so that it’s what I understand and know and I don’t have the time to learn another slicer at the moment. But I am keeping a list of ones to try and I’ll keep Prusa’s in mind! One day I will, but right now 3D printing is a tool for me to make cosplays which is the important part. I can always sand away seams and zits so it’s not the end of the world for me, but one day when I have more time I’ll probably explore other stuff.

@@vaultfox Cool. Prusaslicer has profiles for most common 3d printers now. Just a few clicks and you will be up and running. If you get bored sometime give it a try. The UI is close enough to Cura to be familiar.

How did you go about learning the how to of 3d printing? I can buy the printer but would feel really lost on what and how to do it. Any tips or guides?

to be honest, I did a LOT of research before getting the printers I did (I'm talking months of watching KZfaq reviews/etc) I would recommend channels like CHEP and UncleJessy as they do a lot of printer reviews/etc and as for times I get lost on what to do or how to fix something, I usually will just google it and troubleshoot with that info. 3D printing is fun but requires a lot of tinkering

I got a Texas-sized spool from Xyltech and found that my extruder wasn't physically strong enough to pull it off the spool, even on their own spool holder - (the filament itself was awesome - I want to get more). I saw you kept it sideways at 9:50 - What was it on top of that helped it spin so easily? Thanks - I love your channel!

Ah, I've had that problem before! I use Lazy-Susan's for mine so they rotate freely, but I've found some don't work as well as others. I had to do some trial-and-error to find ones that would both balance the weight and let the rolls unspool. I *think* these were from Target a few months ago but I'm not sure on the brand as I went through a few. I know Zyltech used to carry spool-holders for their larger rolls, not sure if they are back in stock yet (that's why I went the LS route)

it cost me about $250 in filament cost to build a death trooper costume, which isnt a lot seeing as how bulky they are the files were $35 bondo, primer and paint were probably about $50-75 and then Velcro was about $20 so its around $350 for me whenever I make a big costume :/ (and then my 3d printers are like 1.2k xD)

Great video! Was curious a few times what I was spending per piece of armor. Am I the only that gets amused by the length of filament used? Like if a piece comes close to a mile of filament

Thank you, glad they've helped! And are you talking about measuring/scaling the armor? If so, I have a video on how I do it (that really needs an update) but there is also a software called Armorsmith that I haven't yet tried but am interested in giving a go sometime that can scale parts.

I actually don't 3D model and unfortunately don't take commissions for files I haven't worked with before. There are sites like 3D Hubs and other similar services where you get set up with a local person with a 3D printer and they can fulfill the order for you. There's also other makers who might be keen on taking it on for you though!

im not 100% certain which 3d printer to get but im currently thinking about getting the Creality Ender 3 Neo and its mainboard size is 220x220x250mm, is that bed big enough to fully fit the chest/back piece and jetpack size on the bed?

I use a Creality CR10s, but if you want even cheaper I’ve heard good things about the Ender 3 (just has a smaller build volume than the CR10)

Are there any kind of Copyright Violations for this sort of thing? I would like to get into 3D printing, specifically for props and stuff such as this, but I am unsure of the exact nature of being able to sell it. I've read a couple of things that say it is illegal but then others that say it is fine. Where did you go to make sure things like this are legal?

So I don't have much experience with the dealings of IP's claiming ownership of 3D modeled files as I don't model my own files. In theory, Star Wars could one day sweep all of Etsy and the internet of 3D files modeled by creators and deem them illegal to create or sell, but I don't think they would ever do that unless they intended on somehow mass-producing the armor + helmets that they are taking down. As for the legality of 3D printing pieces to sell, that comes down to the owner of the original files. In my case, Mystery Makers allows for anyone who signs up to their patreon the ability to print their files for profit and sell them ... wheras another 3D modeler may indicate that their files are only to be used for personal use. To be honest I could make your comment into and entire video (which I might do) since there are so many nuances to it, but the long and short of it is ... if you want to sell physical 3D prints, you need to have permission from the 3D modeler themselves first. The owner of the IP that the models are from will most likely not come after you for producing these, however like I said ... I don't have much experience with those dealings

A very important but overlooked cost to 3d printing is the electricity cost! I.e if 1kw costs 25 cents and a 3d printer uses 250w/h then running your printer for 4 hours would cost you $1, very rough figures but for multiple hours long prints the electricity costs add up!

@@vaultfox If the Bo-Katan armour took you 307 Hours total for print time, a CR10S uses about 200W average and the U.S average cost for electricity is 13.72 cents per KWh, the cost to print the full set is only $14, which is less than I expected!

Hi. Im 14 years old and I want to have a din djarin Mandalorian armor cosplay. I found some files on Etsy for around £30 but I haven’t bought them yet because I don’t have a printer and don’t want one. I planned to use some 3d print service for it and I just need a price estimate of what it would cost to have it printed. Do you know?

Can't say for sure unfortunately since everyone prices their stuff differently on those services, but I do know of some folks who sell raw 3D printed kits over on Etsy & Galactic Armory sells some as well but not sure about shipping to Europe

I didn’t do a total cost from an Etsy seller as 1) it didn’t feel appropriate and I didn’t want it to seem like I was going after a certain seller and 2) at least during my brief search I didn’t find someone selling everything from the makers files I use

I’m more of a hobbyist so I don’t factor that cost in (per print at least) but if you’re going to take commissions and price accordingly that’s something to make note of

yeahhhhh I have my own opinions on that amount of markup (there are costs like printer maintenance and such to keep in check) but some people just overcharge straight up
