I’m in Oxford at Antiques On High (one of 4 antiques centres…soon 5!) owned by Vincent Page and Lesley White. Here, over a glass of sparkling water, Vincent and I discuss how much it costs to be an antiques dealer in his Oxford shop!
Visit ‘Antiques on High’ (Oxford, Bowness, Sidmouth and Taunton) www.antiquesonhigh.co.uk to get in touch with Vincent
Do you have any interesting antiques, vintage items to feature here on my channel?
Get in touch with me! dk.harper@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks

I am retired from a pressurised exec job and live in Thailand. Here I buy affordable Chinese, Burmese, Japanese and Thai antique and vintage items. I have more than 1000 pieces many of which you would never find in the UK. Now I have to grapple with social media and learning about selling online so I can sell outside of Thailand. The point being is, yes there is consuming interest and a great future to look forward to long after retirement. A great hobby business indeed.

avid lovejoy fan back in the day...i'd have loved to have had the nerve to follow my heart rather than my head and swopped the promise of a certain income for the romance and bohemianism of being an antiques dealer...but it's a myth that you have to be a dealer to know what you're talking about... avid collectors are some of the best experts i know... just off now for my weekly visit to my local vintage emporium to see if anything half- decent's turned up...serendipity's the order of the day...same set up here up north as there down south... how the dealers make anything much out of it all with purchase price and cabinet rent to pay is still one of life's great mysteries to me... happy hunting y'all!

Brilliant David, lovely banter, one of the great pleasures in the Trade. Interesting you mentioning people, young & retired having a go. My Mum & sister used to be in the Trade in the Halcyon Days & I have always loved antiques pieces, usually fabulous in design & beautifully crafted. On the subject of getting into the Trade, altho I’m an old geezer I have an ambition to open a retail outlet in Dallas specialising in decorative antiques & also interior design orientated. It’s a bit away at the moment but we have a business in The Dallas Metroplex which is growing & looks very promising indeed. I’ll keep you posted on progress. It’s a fascinating business the Antiques Trade, always. All the very best.

Sadly most of the antiques shops I’ve seen, are not accessible though. While there’s little you can do about that if you’re located in a listed building, some councils I’ve heard of are hesitant about owners even putting in any alterations to allow wheelchair access. So even though the Antiques trade may well be a fantastic fit for a disabled person, wheelchair users are often left out. Here’s a challenge for you, David. Look at your travels from the pov of a person in a wheelchair. From lowered curbs, to stairs just to get in these shops, make a note of the barriers. I can’t count how many shops, from butchers to post offices, where I’ve been left outside to figure it out.

I agree completely- im not sure where you are in the world, but the US has so many barriers for handicapped people and very very limited wheelchair access in so many places

@@diller468 I’m originally from eastern Canada, have traveled around upper NY state, Vermont, all the way to Old Orchard Beach in Maine. I’ve also visited Tignes & Annecy, France, as well as spending 4 years in Oslo, Norway. We moved to Scotland end of 2003, and I landed up in this wheelchair a few years later. It’s been an education!

Or anyone with iimpaired mobility. I use a stick, but with progressive MS that may change and not for the better. Anyone on crutches or with a walker is similarly told their custom isn't wanted. No two ways about it. it's disgusting.

Some places are much more accessible. Vince’s Taunton Centre would work with a wheel chair. It has a huge ground floor area

@@DavidHarperAntiquesTV I remember the 1 time I went to Harrogate it was easy to get around, most of the antique fairs likely are. The shop that opened in Alva, Glentana Mills is the one your friend James Lewis went to in the 2012 Antiques Road Trip series, actually asked me about the ease of getting around the shop. It’s nice when a business asks, even better if they can act on suggestions, but I do realise the cost per square metre can make some things more difficult. At least, if we can get in and sit near the cash, while someone helps us look at stock we may want, that’s much better than some shops I’ve been to.

I suppose the biggest thing is building your stock then knowing where to sift out new stock too.

Very interesting and something I’ve been considering now I have retired and I live 40 mins from Oxford too and I know the centre well. Vince’s rent sounds very sensibly pitched for the location…but my issue is that it’s quite cramped and a bit of a rabbit warren and the quality of the dealers and stock is very patchy…especially as you go further into the centre
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV 9 ай бұрын
Best to speak to Vince to see if he has space…the quality would really depend on what you have as stock. It’s good to cater for all markets in the centre though to get the footfall, which they certainly do. And you’re right, a great location, especially for the tourist market…go for it!!

I wish this concept in marketing would take root in Canada, at least in Ontario. The selection of great antiques and collectibles available in England as compared to here is orders of magnitude greater. But then , you are surrounded by so much history. Thanks for showing us that.

Antique hunting is so much bigger here in the U.K., and much of mainland Europe, compared to back home. I don’t remember seeing antique shops in Montreal all that much. The closest was when I worked at my first job, a coin shop that specialised in Canadian coins & stamps, when I was 16. I’d been hanging around there for a long time, it was in a shopping plaza that was on my way to school, and I had to pass this shop every day.

Does Vince allow people from abroad to rent cabinets in his antique shops? I live in Northern Canada and it is 600kms to the nearest antique mall and 4000kms to the nearest high end shops. So I feel like it would be more realistic to rent a booth in UK since that would make all the antique auctions more accessible to me as well.
@ms.c.j.
@ms.c.j. Жыл бұрын
Are you in NWT? Or Fort Ch? My partner grew up near Edmonton so we’re guessing where you’re at. The auctions would be easy enough if you caught the ones that have online bidding available, but then someone has to accept the delivery, redo the prices, set up your cabinet to highlight the best pieces at any one time… Maybe there is something to start up a business there?

Few hours north of Grande Prairie. Only down side would be ivory is illegal in UK and that is my main area of interest. But it would be a fun hobby and I could get by dealing in things like Georgian silver, Chinese coral carvings, rhinoceros horn, tortoiseshell, and exotic taxidermy.
