Every hobby comes with a price. Im 50 yrs old and i am still building these P.F.Ts. It all started for me back in 87 when i was in JR High. We had what was called the Recycler it was a news paper that came out every Thursday and you would find just about everything including guns. Anyways i did finish building one of these 87 P.F.Ts 2 years ago and man prices tripled in price around the Covid pandemic. I lost count around at around $5k it took me about 3 yrs just to find most of the era correct parts. I got to give thanks to my oldest son and my wife in helping me out finding the part i needed to build this day glow pink P.F.T it feels good taking home a trophy at the end of every bike show i have showed this GT the smile of my kids receiving the award is pricele$$. 👍🙏😎

That’s amazing. Yes, there is a feeling of joy that I get every time I add a new part to this bike. I love how these bikes bring me back to a time where I had no worries or any real responsibilities at all. The only thing I wanted to do was go RIDE!

@@bmxfreestylefanatic Prices increased during covid but not because of covid. Used parts aren't reliant on factories or plants closing down or anything with shipping being halted. It just happened to coincide with a lot of new people regaining interest in 80's BMX as collectors. I guess it was just around the time that older people reconnected with their childhood nostalgia. Covid did add to it in that many people were at home for an extended period of time and evidently came across restored bikes online and found out that some parts are being reproduced. I got back into these old freestyle BMX's years before covid and seen the prices skyrocket since then. It was already on the upswing but not the way it is now. I seen the same thing happen to other hobbies I am and was interested in at different times. Stuff like 60's classic and muscle cars, comic books, LP records, non-sport collector cards, etc. Niche hobbies where stuff was relatively inexpensive to have an interest in before it gained a larger following and prices increase. It's not all bad, though, seeing that without the current interest in 80's BMXs we wouldn't have these current reproduced parts. Stuff like those retro 26" cruisers and these GT seats in all different colors that Porkchop sells.

Great video, thank you! Appreciate the references to prices can indeed vary. Three years ago or so when I started I kept an excel spreadsheet, stopped updating it beginning of 2023 it adds up! 😂 ….you’re right some stuff you go for and some you wait. Timing plays a big role and finding stuff in good condition. It’s a hobby, cheaper than cars and can get a bike completed in these busy times without too much space, but the addiction is real 😊

$1550 for the wheels is CRAZY lol . I found some black OGK GT performer mags on eBay for $600 back in December. I def bought them because the black mags are getting harder and harder to find . I would've just threw some OGK's on this build. But I prefer mag over spokes, so that's just me lol . UKAI's are expensive....But nice build. This is my dream bike, along with the Dyno Pro Compe from '87. I'm hoping to come across a barn find like I did with my Compe. I currently own a chrome mid 90's Dyno Compe and a '85 Diamond Back

Wish I still had my 86 Performer. It was a light gray color with the light gray seat…which was supposedly rare as far as the seats go. I sold it for $100 in 1988 and it was subsequently stolen and smashed up with a sledge hammer according to the friend who bought it.

Beautiful bike! But I hope you really didn't pay as much as you said. My buddy built a 87-89 Pro Performer for his son just last year. Picked up the frame/fork, with OGK mags locally for $850. Bought a bunch of repop parts from Pork Chop and eBay. Bought some OG parts from eBay. Had frame/fork/seat post/bars powder-coated for $300. Had the rest of the OG parts like the brake levers, seat clamp, and chain ring refinished in paint by a local auto shop. So his is about 50% new repop parts, so nothing extremely special for all the OG guys. But he states everything cost him $2k total. And the only thing that doesn't look visually accurate are his pedals. You're right about the OG pedals being insanely big money lol. He said he wasn't going to spend that when he already had a set of Bear Traps from the early 90s lol. Anyway, thanks for sharing your masterpiece! And have fun with it!
@bmxfreestylefanatic

Parts have certainly escalated in price. It’s extremely difficult to find a frame and fork set alone for under $2k. And hopefully it’s in good condition. Sounds like he got a really good deal. 👍

@@bmxfreestylefanatic Plus just like you said, when you're not trying to be 100% accurate with all OG parts, and you purchase a bunch of repops, it saves a TON of money. But like you and Morbid Thrasher know, it costs a lot to do it right. Take care

One thing that money CAN buy, is good memories of an era we'll never live to witness again. So although a lot of money is needed for these builds, looking at what you've acquired or built is PRICELESS when you think of the good times these objects represent. I say, if you can afford to have it, then buy it, as you only live once! I have a Skyway and Torker that I just stare at and smile. I'm looking for a Mongoose Californian, then I'm done! Or so I say!
