Most EV drivers will choose to have an electric vehicle charge point installed at home. In this video, we help to unpack the cost of having an EV charger installed at home. Should you buy a charger as part of your electric car purchase. What do "standard" installation packages include? What hidden costs are involved.
Information is based upon EV charge point installations within the UK. We've used an example offered by PodPoint, as they offered the cheapest deal when we searched via google. 1st July 2021.
OZEV grant is £350 at time of filminh (formerly known as OLEV grant)

The pricing is a real stigma that I deal with on a daily basis. No one understands the things we have to take into consideration to provide a quote. Where alot of companies get there foot in the door by quoting a cheap price until they do a site survey then add the extras on. I have found that every job I survey and explain the whole process I tend to win the job, the ones I don't it's based on a remote quote and they just look at the cheapest.

You get people that Will gladly pay £30k, £40k and a lot more for a car, then skimp when the thing needs to be charged, crazy. And I have no sympathy with those people when it goes wrong, or they get a crap install, it's partly their own fault.

I’ve had a Rolec fitted 4 years ago, with a 3 year warranty, the unit failed one week outside the warranty period, neither Rolec or the installer ChargedEV were interested, fortunately the installation cost was £99 inc OLEV grant, now having a HyperVolt 2 installed £500. I had a pod point install.... 1) It was for a unit directly through the wall from the consumer unit 2) It required a mini consumer unit installed (we still have a fuse box... with fuses in it... and its full) 3) We had the main input for a loop (Scottish Power fitted a new line to next door for free taking us off the loop) It did not take 2 hours, there was much swearing by the electrician. PS it came with the car and Vauxhall picked up all additional charges for our house, so that bit was great!

2hrs to install 😂😂, didn't take long for the race to the bottom to start. Why does the electrical industry continuously want to charge next to nothing for any electrical job If these cars run on water, do you think a plumber would be charging next to nothing for an install. Give it 5 years before you see the adverts, got an electric vehicle, had a EV point installed, then you maybe eligible for a compensation claim.

We have a similar setup as shown towards the end of the video with our charger being needed to be fitted to the fence at the end of the garden. One issue we also have is that area wouldn't be our official parking bay. Our neighbours don't mind us parking parallel to the fence as cars can still pass but we should park over the other side of the parking area. Because of this we don't qualify for a grant. I’m trying to get an ev charger installed at the moment (1 month before the grant ends) and it seems like the installers are just trying to pocket the £350. The quotes I’ve had are around £900+vat for the wallbox or podpoint 5m tethered. The armoured cable run is 15m clipped externally and plenty of room in the consumer unit that was newly installed 4years ago. Charger at 450, cable 130, clips and glands 20 = 600+vat. Do electricians now earn £600ish/day? Or is it because they think I can afford it because I have a 40k car on order?

The problem is that these "national installers" is they get the EV chargers in bulk at a lot less than a local spark can get them for. If it's only going to take 2 hours to fit, they can install 2 or 3 in a day, so that's the spark paid for & it will be a rush job, so no pride taken in the install. A guy I know had one done & they must of used a whole contractors pack to run the cable from the board to the EV & not being in the game he thought it was fine, until i showed him a photo of my installs . To do it properly it will take longer than that, you have the form filling side, and the install, even if it was easy you would want all least half a day, so you would be lucky to do two in a day, because you may have to drive 20 miles to the next one, even if the houses were next door you may struggle to do two in a day, I would be allowing a day per install

Good point re future proofing. With one EV charge point the current single phase domestic supply is OK. But in a multi car household as we all go EV we would be better off with 3 phase supplies if each car user expects simultaneous charging at a fast rate - imagine the cost of upgrading to 3 phase added to the cost of a charge point. If the house has electric showers and cooking the maximum demand could be an issue with just one car especially in an older house with a 60a cut-out DNO fuse.

Mobile phone manufactures cordless drill manufacturers and camera manufacturers to name a few,all supply a battery and a plug in charger with there products, So why don’t electric vehicle manufacturers, supply a plug in charger with every electric vehicle , if they wanted to they can easily make a plug in charger that would plug in to a standard sockets . They don’t because the national grid will loos out and there profits will fall . That’s why.

They do - a granny cable - chargers at 2.3 kW from a 13A plug .

Most of them do supply a standard granny cable - it's just they are a pain in the arse, and slow.

The National Grid don't sell electricity to domestic consumers Sean. The National Grid are responsible for operating the grid and continuity of supply. DNO's ( District Network Operators) are the more local organisations who carry out repairs or modifications to the local grids etc. It's the energy companies whom actually sell and supply your electricity and gas......and incidentally, they are the ones who offer the cheaper EV specific tariffs. As the others have said, you do get a basic charging lead with a new EV.

Yes but it's the conservative government who have come up with all electric vehicles by 2035 but they don't give you the money for the installation of the charger do they and what about people who buy a car for say £700 they can't afford to put a bloody charger in so really in the future cars are only going to be for certain people people working on minimum wage can't afford this ???? Some people rely on emergency electric for their home 🏠 never mind this extra cost aswell Surely there must be people out there who think the same way can't be just me. ?

Why does it cost so much for a 30 amp socket to be fitted ❓This is the question we all should be asking. 😡🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤠

@@efixx£500 for a box that is probably made for £100 in china £100 an hour for fitting and another £100 for the cable. It is just a big rip off yes safety is important that's why I will not get a cowboy in to fit it. If you really believe it's good value for money. I suggest you do a video where you brake down the cost of manufacture and fitting.🤠

Here’s a thought for all EV users , if we all go electric where do the government get the money they collect form all the fossil fuel sales. That’s all the petrol and diesel ,plus the lack from road fund licenses. If we use electricity from home ,how will the government metre and charge of EV energy. Will it come under one overall pricing ,which will in turn have all electricity costing 5 or 6 times more than now. The government are leading us all up a blind alley with their tax toll booth needs feed .

They won't do any of that. It's a poorly kept secret that fuel duty will be replaced with a system of road tolls. Discussions are already in progress between the Government and the AA, RAC and other involved parties. If the Government legislated to fit meters to everyone's EV chargers, many ( including me ) would simply charge their car up overnight using the TV socket at the standard domestic rate, over several nights. They wouldn't know whether you'd sat up all night watching TV, or charged a car up. To begin artificially jacking up electricity prices as a tax raiser would wreck the economy. It would push millions more ( particularly elderly) people into fuel poverty. It would also increase costs excessively for Hospitals, schools, industry etc.... It would also be tantamount to political suicide...... In the not too distant future, all new vehicles will come out of their assembly plants with a tracking device already fitted. Some already are. It is this type of technology which will be used to charge you for road usage. As soon as you unlock your car and "start" it, the charge will begin. It has been suggested that those living in more remote areas may be allowed an annual block of "free" miles, to enable them to access services and other facilities ( healthcare, schools etc ) in the nearest towns etc. A possible downside is that it may also be possible for the powers that be to access data regarding whether you speed or not on particular roads. It may also be possible to be fined electronically for any traffic offences you may commit, with the possibility of them remotely disabling your vehicle for non payment of those fines etc...... And what about people who - like me - have solar panels? Currently my panels feed directly into the grid and earn me money. If I had my system modified to feed the solar energy into my car, how could they tax that? They won't know when or for how long the sun shone over my house. There are already systems and chargers available which will allow you to direct solar or wind energy to where you'd prefer it to go...... Do a KZfaq search for Fully Charged Zappi Charger, and you'll see how it all works.... And once we've virtually all gone electric and are driving EV's, the Government may no longer need to subsidise the oil industry to the tune of £300 billion per year anymore, so perhaps that may soften the blow a little?
