You might not have council tax if you move every 2 weeks, but you have other expenses such as fuel, gas & paying to get rid of waste water etc. If you are moored at a marina or a permanent mooring you still have to pay council tax. Theres also the point that houses increase in value whereas boats/caravans/vehicles decrease in value. My friend had a narrowboat built years ago & it cost just over £100,000. They had it around 8 years when her husband died & she sold it & only got £49,000 for it & it was in excellent condition, even the engine looked brand new! The house she has was bought for £23,000 30yrs ago & is now worth £350,000 & it isn't a big house, just 2 bedrooms & nothing flashy. It doesn't have a garage & is in a town so just an average house is what I mean.
@Maxx1066
@Maxx1066 11 ай бұрын
No matter where you live there will Bills Gas, Water, Council Tax or Mooring fees. A Canal boat will need its hull looked at every so often and does the Roof of a house. Everything depends on the effort you wish to put into House or Boat..

They are saying, that deducting their personal loan monthly repayments from the total of £775(?) ish would mean around £300 per month needs to be spent on everything else. So if someone had enough cash to buy their £38k boat outright and not take the personal loan this is what it would cost them per month
@ottopartz1

With the loan, I'm guessing in 6 years they can have it paid off and will have a good bit of equity to use for a better boat or a house down payment. Not entirely a bad way to go for a young couple.

Be careful you'll have so many Narrow Boats on the water. You'll be able to walk from east coast northward till you run out of waterway. And never get your feet wet. Im looking into living on the water here in the U.S. I almost bought a little cabin sailboat. But after looking it needed almost all the bright work replaced. Many stripped screws. The mast was bent pretty badly. So I passed. But I'm now looking into building. I know it'll be more. But I'll have exactly what I want when finished. No settling and thinking. Well I can change this and that. Because there may never come a time especially once I'm living on it. Great videos y'all

It’s at a place called Chirk (where I happen to live), which is in North Wales, pretty much right on the border with England. The Aqueduct actually crosses from England to Wales, and the canal itself is called ‘The Llangollen Canal’. It is 70 feet high and 710 feet long. Designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford, work started in 1796 and finished in 1801, so it’s only just over a couple of centuries old. Still going strong and as it was built in a stone monolithic style, it should last at least several more centuries, I’d say😉

That’s not cheap. In fact considering the amount of space you have, it’s actually very expensive. Plus your hull will degrade over time due to the electrolytic effect, eventually requiring a complete new one. This means that you have only a constantly reducing investment in the boat as it loses value over time, with the added risk of sinking. On top of that you have no vehicle for travelling beyond the canal and river systems, or even shopping etc. I looked into this option and decided it’s actually an expensive lifestyle choice that’s not even environmentally sustainable. However, a fully treated and marine painted hull, a scrap wood fired triple expansion steam engine (to keep the fuel costs to the bare minimum), and a partially finished status to avoid fees, plus a small business of some sort, and a motorcycle, might make it more interesting.

It’s all relative … I own my boat outright, my costs are minimal … others aren’t … the simple matter of the fact is, if you do your due diligence, get a full survey, because for one reason, the bottom of your boat is the roof. For those starting out, it’s far cheaper and far more closer to nature, therefore healthier to live on a boat. I love it, it’s a far gentler life than living in a house, in one place with cost spiraling out of control …

SoCal is killing me. Rent for a crap apartment is at least 1,200 British pounds and easily 1,500 and that's without utilities like water, electricity, internet. Also need a car, insurance and fuel.
