This makes me very glad I live and study in Germany. Converting everything to pound sterling, I pay: 120 pounds for the student affairs organization per semester, so 240 pounds per year. 170 pounds for my public transport ticket, which allows me to use all forms of public transport in the Munich area for half a year, so 340 pounds per year. 500 pounds for my rent per month, but it has to be kept in mind that I live in the most expensive city in Germany and I have privately rented my own room, which I personally prefer over over a shared apartment, but it is considerably more expensive. And I also have the room for the entire year, not just X weeks. So rent comes to 6000 pounds per year. So all in all, 6790 pounds excluding living expenses which I have no overview over right now. My total expenses are less than your tuition fees alone. That's quite insane.

Casey Vella ....yes, but keep in mind, the U.K. University tuition was free, before the Tony Blair regime....which first put rates up to 3000 pounds, then after promising "no increase in tuition fees" , doubled them to 6,000 pounds.....then the coalition govt Tories and Lib Dems in crease fees to 9,000 pounds.... The fee increases are short-sited, in that, in an information era, it does not make sense to reduce access to further education. By doing so, this reduces domestic supply of skilled workers and reduces competitiveness. The fees in the USA are insane!

For international students, STEM courses (especially engineering) can start off as £19,000+ and it increases per year. For example, I study chemical Engineering at the university of Surrey, and I’m Nigerian. For my first year I paid £19,500 Second year - I paid £20,600 And for my final year - £21,600 This does not include any accommodation - private or univeristy. University (for the university of Surrey) accommodation ranges from £3000-£5000. As Paige said “location matters”. Guildford (where i am) is stupidly expensive where places can range from £1,500 a month for one bed and higher for bigger houses. Also international students are not eligible for student loan or bank loans, so you’re best bet is to do self finance or scholarships ( which was usually capped unless you’re absolutely brilliant). Hope this helps 🙂

Why must getting an education be so expensive?! I'm in the US and couldn't go to my first choice of college because out-of-state costs made it about $60,000!! I think in pounds that's about 47,000!!!! And, a college I applied to charges $75,000!!! Luckily in-state tuition is "cheaper" but I'm already in debt and I haven't even finished my first semester lol. I really love this video! College/University prices are kind of tricky to navigate and having someone explicitly explain it, even though I obviously don't go to Cambridge ( I would love to though lol!), will definitely help others going to uni :)

This Is Crazy. I'm italian and for the 3 years of my First degree i paid about 600 Euros in total, for school taxes. I live 2 hours of train away from It and the train ticket costed me about a 100 € per month, but only for 6 month a year because in Italy you have only 3 months of lectures each semester. Also, i skip most of my lectures because you can also do that, so i did not spend all that Money in train tickets. I don't understand how students in the UK can afford going to university onestly

Compared to what you wrote about Italy, Austria is still cheaper: 22€ per term as fee for the uni and then individual commuting expanses. In my case that's the term ticket (for metro & co.) for about 150€ (but I get 100 back) and the monthly ticket for the train for 92€. So I'm really so happy to be here because otherwise uni would be not possible, or the degrees I want to do wouldn't be possible.

Super useful info Paige! Wanted to chime in as someone that has finished their undergrad at a UK uni (Warwick), and now at Cambridge as a post-grad: Accommodation costs vary between the colleges - go check out the college websites if you're curious/worried. I'm paying ~£124 per week for college accommodation in Corpus Christi on a 49 week lease, I was paying ~£80 per week back at Warwick 😭 Also worth noting: The University of Cambridge tries to guarantee college accommodation for 3 years, so anyone that stays for a 4th year to do an MA is not necessarily guaranteed college accommodation for that last year (varies between colleges) - same applies for a Cambridge graduate returning for a PhD - they have very likely used up their 3 years of college accommodation during their undergrad. The bursury is a life saver; Warwick had a similar system - they automatically identified me and I didn't even need to apply so that was convenient. If you feel like it might apply to you, email the uni and ask for help, even during the application process that's the kind of info that is useful to know. Take Paige's advice and try to do some work before uni, having some extra money as a safety net was such a huge help for me. Can be especially useful if you need some extra money to see you over to the next maintenance loan payment (you won't get it all in one lump at the start of the year!). We could work as undergrads at Warwick, but everyone I knew that did so, seemed to either be perpetually tired and/or struggling to keep up with academic work. Meal-prep is your friend - even just for lunch time meals. It'll save you money in the long run, and help you keep on top of your nutrition while at uni. This is a useful site for prospective Cambridge undergrads: www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/fees-and-finance/living-costs

I live in Belgium! We are lucky in our school expenses! 🙂 *Tuition: max. around £860 per year. Lower income + no government aid: £400 per year. Lower income + government aid: only £86 per year. *Public transportation: around £250 a for the train or £170 for the bus per year. *Books/syllabuses: free (online) to £40 per item. *Student housing: depends on the city, square feet, private or inside the school itself, ... Usually it's £215 to £517 per month. In every aspect of school we have government aid: from kindergarten up until universities, and even adult courses to learn an extra language or something. This all depends on your parents/your income and living situation (if you live alone or go into student housing - you get more). This extra amount can vary from a couple 100s to a couple of 1000s pounds per year. Scholarships or loans barely happen in this system. Our kindergarten to secondary schools don't have tuition, unless they are private schools. We have something called a 'maximum invoice' for other expenses (books, excursions, lockers, lunch, ...). This information is transparant, limited to a maximum amount of costs and shared at the beginning of the year (so no surprises for the parents). Some schools even offer free supplies, lunches, activities, ... If it's too much money at once, you can pay it off to the school. I'm happy I live here 😂

I don't know a fellow student here in Australia without some sort of part time job especially after second year.In fact, many students spend more time at work rather than on campus especially as so many lectures are accessible any time on line. However, I am now a master's student and I can't work while studying. I think it's such a shame that education requieres students to take loans and pay so much money for it. I have some friends in France and Sweden and they either don't pay a lot or get paid to study. I think this system should be implemented everywhere since I see education as an investment for every society..

I was reading the comments and that's actually crazy. In Italy people pay different amount of money per year for university based on how much money they can actually spend, so if your family (or you if you live alone) has an annual report that's low you're gonna pay less than a rich family. Plus if you ask you can received an extra amount of money every semester to pay for books, for an apartment (or just for yourself) , but you can also ask for an accommodation provided by the university that's cheaper then an usual apartment. For example this year I'm gonna pay less than 500€ for studying at university and something like 100/150€ for books and 35€ for traveling. Hope that my message has sense and it's clear 🤗

Now I attend a public university in Italy and tuition fees are around 1500€ a year. My university though provides with a scolarship students with good grades, so I end up paying just half of the fees (and a daily meal in the university cafeteria). Adding the fact that I live close enough to the university (I pay like 1000€ a year for my train+bus pass) and my living costs are included in my family's ones, I end up paying like 2000€ a year for my university expenses which is not much if compared with other countries and I feel extremely lucky for this. What people don’t realise about UK tuition fees are that we pay so much interest. It’s difficult to find a job (over 60k) where you will paying more than just the interest rates. Most people won’t pay off their loans at all and only stop paying after 30 years when the loans are abolished. Most UK students will have student loans of around 120,000 pound by the end of their loans. Watch some KZfaq videos about it. 9000 pound tuition is very deceptive!

It's expensive for the average British family but it is not impossible for a young person from such a family to go to Cambridge or universities in expensive cities. The secret is to start saving long before the child goes to uni. The earliest the better but it's not late if the parents start saving after their child goes to secondary school. It's not going to be easy for most families. It will mean less meals out, less holidays, less new clothes for the whole family, especially Mum, having hair cuts at cheap salons, buying skincare products from supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl and forgetting about Chanel products or even Clinique ones. There are so many ways we could save … it will be sacrifices at first but not as bad when you get used to a more simple and thrifty lifestyle. Of course, if you think your needs of luxury goods means more to you than your children's future, then it's up to you whether to make these sacrifices or not. Lastly, limit the number of children to two and it will much easier for the parents.

In Italy you pay depending on your parents income, I think it's a pretty good system. Sadly, I would never be able to go to such good universities but I quite like the quality of mine (a part from some professors that can't teach...) and I also think that personal work can do a lot, so, if you are not in the best university, it doesn't mean you can't learn just as much and as well

Now I understand why a lot of people from nearby countries come to study in Argentina; here, not only your degree is seeing in a more serious light if you go to a public university instead of a private one, but also university itself is free. You will only buy the necesary materials for your career, so, for example, being a dentist means spending a considerable amount on the equipment while studying, whereas in engineering (electronic and electric) we mostly pay for printed notes, materials to build devices, and an advanced calculator (up to you). Also, a very important detail, we actually get money from the state for studying, the amount depends on your career and the year you are currently on; not only that but there's also a lot of financial help for students in general, like free bus rides with a special card and so on. People from other countries get exactly the same rights as someone born here (which is amazing) so everything above aplies to them. In my opinion we are spoiled too much by the goverment on this area, though I'm very grateful for all the help we get. By the way sorry for my english, It's not my primary language.

In Portugal, where I live and study, the tuition cost for public universities is on average 850€ per year. Some private universities can charge 500€ PER MONTH. The acommodation can be 150€ or 600€ (it depends where we study. In Lisbon for example the living costs are really expensive).

Also, i don't know i to explain this in english, but in italy you pay university taxes (insurance) accordingly to your family annual income. So low income, you pay less. There also a lot of oppurtunities to obtain a scholarship, and i do have One. I was able to play everything university related on my own , with a part time job and the money they give me for the scholarship. Basically i get paid to go to university

hey all, I just have a quick question... How the heck is accomodation so fricking expersive?! I genuinely don't understand. If I'm not mistaken Paige pays around 700 Pounds/month. For a bedroom and a bathroom. With a shared kitchen etc. I am from Germany studying medicine in Lübeck (Nothern Germany) living cost here is quite a bit above national average (but of cause not comparable to Munich etc). I live in Uni accomondation which is subsidized by the state. I pay 210 Euro/Month, that also includes Utilies. Our flat is small, I share with another girl but we have a reasonble bathroom and kitchen/dining area and a balcony in a very quite street in a well built houses basically on campus. Even people who rent privately pay between 250 and 400 Euros a month in a shared flat/house or around 350-450 Euros for self-contained studio appartments. Why is one room so expersive especially as rent isn't that much more expensive in the UK (I lived in London for two years so I don't think I'm that wrong about the numbers but do feel free to correct me). Well, anyway. I am glad I'm going to Uni in Germany... xx

For the part about student loan repayments, I read on the government website that you pay back 9% of the part of your income which is over the threshold, you don't pay 9% of your income overall So if you earned £1000 over the threshold, you would pay £90 per year.

£9250 is a little over $12k, which is pretty much about what I pay for in-state tuition at a public university. Of course in the UK, that money gets you a degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The way I see it is that college in the United States isn't bad as long as you don't go to a private school or an out-of-state school. Most of the people who you see complaining about how they have to pay off almost $100k in student debt (who are not doctors, pharmacists, or lawyers) are people who went to out-of-state schools or private schools that charge them a premium just to major in some useless major like gender studies. And it's also important to mention that oftentimes the amount of debt they have to pay isn't necessarily the amount of debt they graduated with, but the amount of debt they owe a few years after graduation. Since their major is useless, it's hard for them to find a job, which means they can't pay off their debt as quickly, which means they have to pay even more thanks to compounding interest, all of which often leads to them paying more in interest than what they actually owe in principle. Also, some of these people don't know how interest works, so they only pay the bare minimum or not at all. Either way you look at it, yes the US needs to find a way to reduce college tuition, but at the same time, people need to do their research and stop going to university for the wrong reasons. I honestly believe that many people are just willfully ignorant. They go to school because so many other people are doing it and when their life after college doesn't work out the way they planned, they blame other people for choices they made because they don't want to face the truth, which is they had no business going to college in the first place.

In Sri Lanka free government education is provided but students have to take the Sri Lankan state exam and also students will be going to university when there are around 20 years . However if parents can afford ,international schools do provide the Cambridge and edexl syllabus. Also for students trying to pursue a further with commerce related subjects do have good programs in Sri Lanka. Those students have to pay for university. No government loans provided for those students. Also in Sri Lanka the culture is that the parents should pay for the child’s full higher education.

I know it depends a lot on the person's financial condition or the country's currency quote ... but for me this amount that is spent per year is an astronomical value. this really makes me appreciate the german version, where uni is quite cheap (like i think around 160€ per semester, so 320€ per year) & most unis cost the same - accomodation is completely different though, most unis don't offer enough rooms for students and the price for rooms on the regular market are quite high BUT if you are in a room in student accomodation, then you pay a lot less. I right now pay 288€ per month, meaning that my room costs me 72€ per week. The lease is for 3 years, but you can extend it by doing chores for the house. Well that is that.

Tuition and accommodation costs in China are the opposite in the UK. The top universities are run by the central government, private universities are still at a stage of development and charge relatively high fees. e.g. Tsinghua University which ranks 23rd in the world (THE 2020), tuition fees for Chinese students is about 550 pounds and 3000 for international students. So we don't have a loan problem, but the government does offer interest-free loans to students facing family difficulties. And the scholarships and bursaries are more for honours and awards than for aid. Anyway, your tips for budgeting are useful to students all over the world!

An European Union citizen perspective: EU citizens are entitled to tuition fee loan for undergraduate degrees. They can apply for maintenance loan if they've lived in the UK for more than 5 years (as of September 1st of the year they start studying) or if they are registered as migrant worker. If you wish to study at a postgraduate level, the government loan is also available. That one is, however, paid to your account and isn't necessarily designed for your school fees and more as a general help towards the cost of your study. Eligibility rules are the same as for the tuition fee loan for undergraduates.
