Having watched A LOT of your videos, it's clear you don't own gear for the sake of it. You genuinely hear and understand what each tool offers and how each tool shapes sound. I can't say that about some other KZfaq mix engineers. It's a rule I'm following for my own gear. Can't buy anything new until I've mastered what I already have AND only if I can make a case for it usefulness to me.

Low key flex, Dave. 🤣🤣 You deserve it bro for how hard you work at this and you didn't even count camera, lighting and stuff for the KZfaq videos. This is great you have a fantastic studio and its giving something us to aspire to.... In my studio total cost....is about $43K.... I'm a musician so I have more guitars, synths, and keyboards. I've spent over $2K in cables so there is no way you spent $3K in cables. Definitely do the. live stream.

Hi David, great studio, but you also got rent, daw and software, furniture, bills for electricity, gas maybe for driving towards your studio complex, and drinks, food for clients, toiletpaper and cleaning stuff the whole year... Working in the creative arts is not one job, those are several and multitasking ones... People underestimate that... Good to see you doing good, cheers, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex-- EPICA. Ps. Don't forget updates for software, or broken gear, maintenance....

A formidable rig, David, the fruits of all your labours, well earned! It's interesting to reflect that even though this is an eye-watering price tag, it's a fraction of what a pro-level studio of yesteryear would have cost to set up. I remember an old interview with Trevor Horn talking about getting the first Fairlight synthesizer back in the '80s. That one unit cost as much as your entire setup! As far as my studio goes, I'm going to be in-the-box for a while yet, I think! 😂

Thanks so much, learning so much from your videos. I would love to see something like, 8 preamps for recording, one stereo EQ and one stereo compressor for mixing and two stereo mastering units for home recording analog goodness, max 8-10 rack units, budget no concerm and it’s your summer house studio far from your existing pro-studios.⚡️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼

Nice : ) I also never did the math but I made an inventory list for the insurance. Otherwise less high-end EQ's & compressors here but possibly more guitars, amps, synths and old Lexicon FXs [224XL, 3x 300]. My later Drawmer purchases [1973, 1976] got triggered by your excellent demo videos from a few years back. Gainlab Dictator here as well, not absolutely fundamental but very nice to have

Hello David, the equipment comparisons are very entertaining; One suggestion, I wish you could upload the audio files of your comparisons so I could download and listen to them without the limitations of Internet sound "quality." I have never understood why hardware manufacturers don't do it, it is the best promotion they can get (being able to listen to their equipment!!!)... Greetings,
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 ай бұрын
Many companies do. But besides that, there are multiple reasons as to why some decide not to. For once, unethical competition. The test files can be manipulated and re-uploaded to make a unit sound worse, it has been done before. In my case (besides the fact that I'm not a company making gear) the audio I use is 99% from my clients and I have permission and license to use it in my videos, not to re-distribute it.
@patricioo1419
@patricioo1419 3 ай бұрын
You're right, either I or the auto translator didn't express it well! It is true, it is not necessarily about making a comparison between equipment from different brands, but about the processed and unprocessed signal of a specific and well-made equipment as you do, ensuring that there is no deception with volumes and other tricks. It's true, that's what I was referring to, the other thing will be very useful and legitimate, but, as you say, it lends itself to misunderstandings/interpretations/manipulations....I hope that this time the "AI" (IA) translates well what I want to say!!!

It's so crazy to look how much each things cost when you have been building slowly slowly... the total was not what you suddenly dropped on it... but over the years. Never feels like you have spent that much on everything but it happens without you realising. I have to say, I thought this would be more. As I make a list of a starting studio it's very hard to say bellow 50K if including enough analogue units to warrant even adding analogue to it. Monitoring is always a large amount and the most important thing to spend on first and it's then still hard to stay under 20K even with almost no analogue. Any idea you plugin and software total?

Perspective: the total price invested in gear in this video is much more capability, for less money, than was possible just a few decades ago (adjusting for inflation since then). Actually pretty nuts what one can get nowadays. If someone can accept worse build quality and worse resale value, certain items can also be matched performance-wise for less.

Something I noticed you didn't cover here and that's what do you do for feeding AC power to things? UPS's, power centers, filtering ? Each rack independent of another? And how do you deal with ground loops? That kind of cost can get up there. For me I'd rather have an UPS blow itself out to save a few thousand dollars worth of gear. My computer is on an UPS that regenerates the incoming AC to a true sine wave. And everything else gets filtered incoming AC.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 ай бұрын
I covered in previous videos. But now it expanded but same thing. The power is divided in 3 blocks, each block has its filtering and it's remote controlled, so depending on what I'm doing I turn on 1, 2 or everything without having to go behind racks. Plus now the right gear has it's on switches individually, I didn't need the extra switches but it was more efficient to sacrifice one rack space at the bottom because I couldn't put anything there too deep because of the cables and because it's slanted. I never had noise or hum or ground issues, that the power grid and it's a problem if you do have that

They're arguably the best eq ever made in their respective category. Wes really created something special with the TubeEQ, so did SPL with the PQ. They compliment each other perfectly

How do you feel about mixing through a pair of mic Pres on the master bus? Using the line in, of course.

@@mixbustv I have a summing mixer now, but I like what you say about it. Of course, mic pres are for microphones, but I've watched others recommend using a line input on a mic pre/line input on the mix bus to achieve a similar result. I have a Dangerous AD+ and Dangerous Convert 2. I've been using a Ferrofish 16 channel for the summing mixer. But I'd like to eliminate it and go directly from the dangerous DA into a dedicated two-bus chain. I picked up the HG-2 after watching your demos. I'd love to see what you would recommend for a mastering chain for a home studio or recommended two bus units. Thanks for all the great content. I was thinking of an API or Neve line input to get that sound into, HG-2, Rupert NVE MBP, and then my MusEQ to the AD+. I hope that makes sense what I'm getting at.

I have question 🙋‍♂️. I bought the neve master bud transformer but it has a lot of noise . The only way I could think to make it work is use a noise reduction plug-in . How do you deal with noise with that many prices of hardware ? Please let me know cause I thought about just sending it back . Also does every peice of gear have noise ? Like the Disstressor for example ?
@mixbustv

I will be very surprised if the noise comes from the Neve. It's most likely something else in your chain because no gear, especially modern gear, don't have noise
