Ice/Cooler hack: Get two sizes of zip lock bags. Remove the ice from the ice bags & put it in the zip lock bags. The ice in the large zip lock bags will be for the food, and the smaller zip lock bags will be for drinks. Put a trash bag into the cooler before you add the ice bags & food, this prevents any air temperature drafts from exiting or entering the cooler. Try to purchase everything that has been chilled. If you can freeze the cooler itself (I do this in my chest freezer) even better. Play Tetris with the two sizes of zip lock ice bags and the food. Any air gaps should be filled with ice from the spare ice container (this is where the smaller zip lock bags have a second purpose). The higher the ice volume ratio to food volume ratio the better. You can also have a second cooler, or second cooler compartment with 100% ice. As you eat the food, the food volume goes down, and you can then add more ice from your 100% ice container. Drain the water every 3 hours. Water in contact with ice has a higher heat transfer than air, so check and drain the water regularly. The larger the volume of ice to food ratio, the longer the food will be chilled. I have a small cooler that I will keep a single sandwich in, and it is filled with high efficiency gel packs. It will remain under 45 degrees for well over 12 hours (haven’t tested it for longer durations). You should also be mindful of keeping the ice chest in the coolest location possible. Camping near a stream, and placing your cooler down in, or near the stream will keep the ice for longer periods of time. Try to avoid leaving the cooler in the van where temperatures can reach extreme levels. If you have collected 3 to 5 coolers of various sizes, you can test their cooling capacity by placing them inside a chest freezer for 12 hours, lid open. After 12 hours of the cooler being frozen inside the chest freezer, remove the cooler, close the lid, and using a laser thermometer, open the lid and quickly check the inside surface temperature after 1 hour. The difference between the ambient temperature & the inside surface temperature is what’s important. You can compare this difference between each of the coolers you have to determine the one with the best performance.

I'm thankful for the expenses that you shared. Wouldn't that ice come out to only 50$ cents per week? It seems like that worked out pretty well if so. I'm a powered fridge guy myself, but that Yeti may have done pretty good, but it looks hard to get to. Travel some more please.. Go for it Woot Woot!

I think the ice expense was so low because we were eating out a lot and not keeping food in our cooler as much! We usually fill ice in the yeti every 2-3 days because the ice melts fast. Would never recommend using a yeti as a van fridge WOOT WOOT

I for one will be interested in your travel guide when it comes out. One question from your figures here though. You stated you spent $1338 on fuel expenses, and your route map showed 1776 miles in total. If you only got 20 mpg in your Transit Connect (my 2012 Transit Connect gets 25-30 mpg on the highway) you would have used only 88.8 gallons of fuel. Even paying my exorbitant California pump prices, it wouldn’t have come to that high a cost. How many miles did you actually drive? I realize everyone’s driving style is different, but I’m curious as a comparison, driving the same make, and model, what kind of mileage you were getting in your travels. I don’t have a cargo bin on the roof, but I do have a roof rack, and ARB awning that adds some drag to my 2012 Connect.

Excited to get that guide out for you Jonathan! So we definitely drive different than most people because we like to revisit spots to take photos and videos for KZfaq and Instagram. Definitely adds up but it’s our job. The gas would be probably $300 cheaper for others
@dpaint6268
@dpaint6268 3 жыл бұрын
you mention that you can do it for $700 for a month. One thing, again, that is based on double occupancy- both people paying. I am single and want to do this but without a companion, that will be more like $1200 minimum. This also did not include the cost of the vehicle or the maintenance (oil, tire wear, etc. also need to include taxes and licensing). I guess I am thinking far to literally - more along the lines of true living costs. More like if living in the vehicle as a home. I guess you too need to include anything that helped to offset the costs like doing any work or generating any income while away (like a remote job or in your case perhaps KZfaq income?) Ultimately, I want to be able to do this full time and comfortably. I have some real calculating to figure out. I really appreciate your breakdown to help us put a better figure on the costs of doing this! Thanks!

You can't just divide it in half. If anything it cost more for one and gets cheaper for two. For example, the van needs gas whether one or two people are in it, so that expense stays the same. So probably over 1,000 for one person.
