Recently, my mom had to go to the emergency room. However, she had a tourist visa without an American insurance. In this video, I'll show you how it was and how much it cost for her.

@M I A omg! I went to the emergency to get help with some physical issues ive been having, And they literally acted so careless and sent me back with zero help. I decided to take matters into my own hands now and Ive set up 4 different appointments with different doctors that specialize in the issues im having! I literally refuse to keep living "sick" and unwell. I rather be in debt than sick all the time. Whatever it is you're going through I hope you find a doctor or solution!!! ❤

Whats a real crime is when someone dying of cancer who goes through a year of treatments and major surgeries and still dies then as youre grieving their death you get a bill for over a million dollars. And this is while you're insured (and get insurance through your employer and you work at a hospital) Its unbelievably cruel. This happened with my mom in 2006 right after he died. It got settled, but i remember how tramautizing that was for her.

About 45 years ago, my wife and I were traveling in Europe when she got hit by a car in Paris. She was taken to the emergency room. Received excellent care. I was sweating bullets the whole time about the bill to come. When we were leaving, I asked about the bill, saying stuff like please just send it to us, we'll take care of it, etc. They looked at us like we were nuts and said that there was no bill - they had national health insurance. It was such an eye-opener as to how other countries handle health care. (Also, in case you're wondering, she was ok - quite sore, but ok.)

As a Canadian, our family has always been incredibly cautious about travel insurance in the US. I remember crossing the border for a pizza when I was a student in Thunder Bay - and I bought 1 day's worth of travel insurance, on the off chance that I slipped on ice going into the pizza place, or was in a car accident . Nothing strikes fear into the heart of people from universal health care countries (which is most of them) more than American "health care".

You know If you pay a cheap bill every month for insurance maybe you get 80/20 with like a 500 copay. So you pay 500 and now you owe like 2500 and they pay 80% you pay 20% and now the bill is under 1000 at the cost of a monthly insurance bill though. That and let's say something happened and it doubles the cost, they're still paying 80% on all the extra and you pay 20% if you have insurance and if you struggle to pay it you can talk to billing and get a payment plan. Now your 2k bill after imsurance if they did even more then in this video is spread out over 48 months. So if you have insurance you could have more done and the monthly cost would be like less than 50 dollars per month not including insurance cost which varies. That's pretty good. Even without insurance if you can get a payment plan with the billing department for 48 months or something because it's easier to pay 50 bucks per month for 2 years than it is to pay 2-3k all at once. I don't have insurance and if the bill came to 4k but they let me pay it over 60 months I could afford that. I'll sell my car and invest 75% and use 25% to pay the bill for 12 months to buy time and maybe actually make some money in the long run. I'm actually pleased with the price tbh esspecially if they can work with you with a payment plan. Esspecially for the level of healthcare you get. The bills are big because good healthcare people and expensive machines ECT. That's what you want when it comes to your healthcare man even if you have to worm your way through some bills and try to get a thing or two knocked off and payment over a period of time if you can't afford it all at once. Of course major stuff costs a lot more than just going into they tests ran to make sure something serious isn't wrong. But again, if you need major work then you're in a whole different situation as it is man. Getting an arm reattached is going to cost more than a cat scan and the monthly bill will be higher. Obviously. There's a lot of work we can do to reduce bills and we've come a long way believe it or not. Look at the historical cost of an MRI machine.

I lived and worked in the Middle East for ten years. A CT scan cost $25 USD. I was in the hospital, had a hysterectomy from cancer, got an infection, was in ICU and 20 operations to get rid of the infection. I was in the hospital for 10 days. I paid $15 USD….in this county if a patient ever has cancer, the country covers all medical care. I also had a total hip replacement, PT, hospital stay and all medications $15…its sickening that in America when you are sick its cheaper to die from the illness than be treated for the illness!

Well to be fair, they’re not “slightly” higher, they’re up to 65% in most countries in the EU for high salaries, while they only get past 50% in the US for seriously insane salaries (1m+). Career growth is also not a thing in the EU, you will hit a ceiling pretty fast if you live in a small country. It always depends on what you want from life :) Obviously, though, the EU is much, much better in terms of quality of life for the middle class. Pro tip: for the most part, medical bills can be taken off of your credit score if left unpaid. All it takes is convincing them that you can’t pay, and sometimes they will take it completely off your credit score or ask you to pay an amount that you can afford. (They have an allowance for unpaid bills and a lot of people don’t pay at all)
@TheAnnoyingBoss

The scumbags are going to burn through that allowance and ruin it for everyone who actually needs it I think. A note about travel insurance. READ THE FINE PRINT!!! It isn't uncommon for a clause to be present saying something to the effect of "Prior to any treatment or admission to any hospital/medical centre/medical clinic (etc), you (the patient) must call our toll free line to speak with our medical expert to decide if you can receive treatment." Failure to do that will effectively cause a breech and the insurance provider won't have to pay anything. If you're wondering, yes, even if its emergent and you are not capable of making any phone calls.

In the United States a lot of people have insurance plans with high deductibles. Many of them have to pay as much as $8,000 out of pocket before insurance pays one dime. But in general, we're covered and don't have to worry about running out of money if we're in a bad financial situation. Finding Urgent Care Clinics was the best thing that has ever happened to me. They can do so much more then you would think. I had a possible kidney stone, I was in so much pain and was a able to get IV fluids and pain management, an in-house CBC/chem/UA, a full body CT scan and take home meds all within 3 hours. And I have never been so happy when I got a bill of only $1200 (I had no insurance) with an optional 12 month no interest payment option. I wish I could have kissed them through the phone. And other Urgent care clinics across the country have been just as good from rabies vaccines ($60) to TB testing ($20). They can do a lot and for a good price.

So this is why people rather take the taxi to find some underground doctors than calling the ambulance when they broke their legs.

Ended up in the emergency room in Bucharest Romania last May with a dislocated shoulder caused by a e-scooter accident, the people were friendly but they were clearly under-staffed as I had to wait 5 hours for a doctor to look at me, after that they did a scan and checked me out. Although everyone was nice and professional I was mad about the waiting time and the fact they refused to sign me a medical letter for my work. It did not cost me anything as healthcare is free in Romania. But it is true that if you want the best services you may want to choose a private one which costs around 1000 euros per year but it provides higher quality medical services.

@@ezhwt8fq he can live in literally like 90% of other countries in the world and wouldn't have to pay a penny. America healthcare is a joke and is the main reason I'm never going there-

Do you have insurance? If not they can put liens on your house, sue you, start deducting it automatically from your income, etc. It’s easier to just pay.

Beside the travel insurance, make sure you are in a very good condition, bring all basic medications, teas or spices and ointments you usually use whenever you feel not too good.

I hate to say it, but your mom got off cheap! The last time I had a CT scan without insurance (a long time ago), it was nearly $3,000.00 alone. I had a senior friend from Germany visiting several years ago and a similar thing happened. The doctor told him to come back for more tests in a few days. He thought it might be serious. My friend said no thank you, he would wait until he got back to Germany! They wouldn't even see him without payment up front because he didn't have US insurance. Welcome to America!
