How much battery does air conditioning use in an electric car? In this video I test my MG5 Long Range EV to see how much battery does the air con use up in one hour? I was the hottest day ever recorded in the UK so I decided to spend it in my boiling hot car! It was a very interesting test and I'm looking forward to doing the same test in winter with the heating on!

Great content as always. I did the exact same test but more unscientific! It was outside my daughter's school and was mega bored lol (15 min only). Similar findings and also concluded AC isn't a problem for the MG5 LR. I would only consider restricting its use if my charge was 5% or lower (when the GOM goes blank -- -- ). The power gauge of the motor also reduces from 100% boost to 60% ( dial on the right). I tried this close to home of course otherwise I'd be sweating too, as I wanted to know how the car behaves if I was out on a Motorway finding a charger without a queue ; )

Maybe also try keeping the headlights on and wipers along with heating. Because we will be using those things in a cold and rainy day.

thx i like this video. i liked the car aswell (new model) but been scared off, no heatpump and the ''big'' battery size was so disapointing ty dit not fit the 70kwh version. Prices of the MG's areso atractive Marvel R looks great on paperbut fails the consumption. Last hope was the MG4 the seen the picture from the models being schiped and ty forgot to include a interiur cockpit (tesla and vw style) just to keep price down on there end!!! But annyway love the video's on the EV life, this test will do the same for other cars

Very interesting little test, I conclude from that in real world motorway traffic scenario as is often spouted by the EV hate brigade would have even less of a cause for concern. Given the car would already have a nicer ambient temperature at the point you get stuck in traffic. To only drop a few % in an hour including taking the temperature down from 41 degrees shows how little weight there is to that argument

The impact really does seem minimal. I am much more interested in the heating test in winter, I imagine that will have a much bigger impact!

There is so much to get your head around as a new convert. If you would like to do an introduction to public charging networks that would be very helpful, I’m baffled with all the different apps and rfid cards out there

Only ever activated the AC on my Fiat 500e for 5 mins every month for maintenance purposes. During winter, the car has the heating on minimum with the fan on the lowest setting and the car is comfortable. In summer, heating is off with the fan running at second lowest setting which keeps the interior cool because of the tinted glass.

Just dial in a reasonable temp(i use 18 celcius) and hit auto winter snd summer. Always comfortable minimum range loss in 40kwh leaf.

You need to do this test with the car moving.

When you do your heating test in winter please do it in real world terms. By that I mean that you think about starting at a reasonable temperature such as would happen if you came to a halt in snow. And also remember that in the real world you would only be maintaining the ambient temperature. Not trying to grow tomatoes on the back seat. So you would not be setting it to maximum temperature and highest fan speed. I tested my own EV from -6 to 21 and it took 7 minutes with the electric varying between 2 and 6 amps until it reached the set temperature when it backed off to 2 amps. Not a lot when you consider the size of the battery.

Amps are meaningless unless you tell us the voltage too. Better work in energy and power units such as KW and KWh.

No just card pain and general pain when I have to wait to charge it and pay a shitload at the services. Wallet pain at the depreciation. Financial ruin at the prospect of replacing the battery incase it gets so much as dented. Pain from stressing out if it will suddenly catch fire on its own and burn down my street. Pain in the ass if I want to sell it because no one will buy. Pain when I realise just how many children died for me in the congo to have a massive battery in my 2 tonne car which is also a danger to pedestrians and other lighter vehicles in a collision. Back pain is the least of my worries 😂

Just watched this in our ‘sweltering’ (not) June. A single one hour test is useless. Good to have a try but just does not cut the mustard. Several hours of test (and likely repeated, to demonstrate a similar result) is required for any fair test of a system. It may have satisfied the tuber’s mind, but is not a reliable measure without much more/many testing/results. Need more of an inquisition, not a scratch on the surface.

10 miles an hour is higher than i expected or wanted. surprised by that number. There will be a 110kw EV big van with 250 mile range in the market in a month or two in the US and it's a question i had, how many nights can i run the OEM AC on low overnight parked (9pm to 6am), but the van will also have a 110v 15amp outlets and the option of a 500w 5000btu test is a question I had, because in theory that might run for days even with conversion losses so it surprises me that an EV OEM AC would consume >2kw when a wall unit only consumes .5kw per hour.
