Many believe that investing in high-priced, top-of-the-line running shoes guarantees improved speed. Summary:
I tested a pair of shoes from my local sporting store, the Nike Pegasus (one of the best nike running shoes), and the Nike Vaporfly Next% shoes - a very popular carbon shoe, and one of the best super shoes. It is claimed that they improv running economy, so we put it to the test in this video. The shoes were tested over 1 mile at threshold heart rate. I compare the feel on feet, the overall time and explain at the end of the video which shoe is right for you.

we want to see you do a race in all 3 shoes to get a better comparison.

It would be a better comparison if conditions were the same and my fatigue levels were also the same for each race. My initial idea was to do 1km flat out for each shoe but whichever shoe was first would have an advantage - so threshold I thought would be more accurate as it’s not that fatiguing. But yes I’ll eventually do some race testing - thanks for the idea! Maybe I’ll compare super shoes 😮

I estimated that my pair of (the original) Asics Metaspeed Edge gives me improvement between 7 to 10 seconds per kilometer. The shoe used for comparison was an ultra light (165grams) Under Armour pair.

I have the exact same Vaporfly and for me (heavier slower runner) it's around 10 seconds per km faster than a light but non carbon plated Saucony Endorphin Speed 2. It was on sale for 101 GBP last year amd is by far the best running shoe purchase I've ever made. I still use them for training with 500km in them including two marathons

Good test, and video. However, I recommend a HR strap. And, it's definitely the plate combined with the foam that's helping. It's not simply "holding the foam together".

Hi thanks for the comment - yes a heart rate strap would be more accurate. Though I’ve had a hard time with wearing one since fracturing my rib 4ish months ago haha Current literature seems to suggest the foam is more the driving factor - I’m sure it helps to some degree, I’m just not sure if it’s as much as the actual foam itself. I think it’s the plate being stiff so that the foam won’t “fold”. This makes the foam retain its shape and keep its aggressive shape. Probably why stiffer foams feel faster

@@PeakStride I want to as well but I’m not really a fan of very compressive shoes. The price of the AFs and the fact that I’ve heard that it’s softer than the VFs really deters me.

They do make you faster by a bit. Stil more important is that they make you less tired.

Lots of good shoes under $80. I prefer Asics Novoblast 1,2 over other shoes. Just get last years model, and its much cheaper. Asics is superior for me, perfectly placed rubber makes it very durable, lots of miles, comfy, and somehow they made it springy without the plate tech. Rarely gets blisters like with other shoes.

Agreed! There are a lot of great shoes around that’s for sure - last years model ASICS are always an easy buy.
